I'm trying to track down this singer/songwriter (audio below).
Any help would be much appreciated.

I found this while archiving analog tapes last year. And my memory is so fuzzy on it that I can't piece it together.

I can remember recording the parts and I remember doing a mix, but not much more.
Originally, I thought this must have been made while I was still living in Texas which would put it at 1981 or earlier. But I hear, in several of the instrument lines, a heavy Echo And The Bunnymen influence which  would mean after 1982 and possible even 1984. Which means I was in Eugene, Oregon at the time.

Also, is that Dave O'Toole on the sax?
Much appreciated, if anyone has an insight on this.

These are three different solos on three very different sessions. Thought it would be cool to share. None of these are final mixes and many things could change.

"Playing With Fire" is the first live recording by Deep Energy Orchestra. This super-group showcases prog-phenom Trey Gunn (King Crimson) and Indian percussion master Selvaganesh (Shakti, John McLaughlin, Jonas Helborg) teaming up with composer Jason Everett (Mister E) and a Seattle-based classical string ensemble.

Performing the eclectic compositions of world-jazz bassist Jason Everett, this group of Indian, Prog Rock, and Classical musicians take the listener on a journey of exotic soundscapes. Jason’s ability to weave Indian-style melodies together with complex, funky, odd-meter grooves is deceptively natural.

More-strings-than-usual might be a theme for this group as lead violinist Radhika Iyer, from San Francisco played her seven-string electric violin and Everett himself is known for his unique seven-string fretless bass. Other local musicians who rounded out the sound included tabla player Anil Prasad, and classical musicians, Rachel Nesvig on violin, Aleida Gehrels on viola, and Phil Hirschi on cello.

These performances were recorded live over a two-day recording session at the Jack Straw Cultural Center in Seattle, WA as part of an Artist Residency award. Everything was also captured on video with multiple cameras so that the unusual instruments (tabla, kanjira, seven-string electric violin, Warr Guitar, and Selvaganesh’s custom drum kit) can be seen as well as heard.

Ancient Of Days

For Trey Gunn, the merging of storytelling, visual imagery and music have always been the point of contact for his creative life. Photography, painting, language and film play together to reinforce and inspire the musical experience he has sought throughout his rich career.

A native Texan who now resides in Seattle, Gunn, began his musical life at the age of 7 playing piano. His interest in music grew through various instruments: electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, and the touch guitar. He completed a degree in classical music composition at the University of Oregon before moving to New York City where his professional life blossomed.

In 1992 he was asked to join David Sylvian and Robert Fripp in a collaborative project that toured throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. The band released "The First Day" and "Damage" – a live recording from the Royal Albert Hall in London – both on Virgin Records. During this period Gunn also found time to record his first solo album "One Thousand Years.” This recording began his work merging storytelling, dreamtime and music. 

In 1994 he joined King Crimson – a group many contend as the most aggressively, adventurous rock band of all time. Over the next decade he participated in seventeen King Crimson CDs, two DVDs and hundreds of performances. For his role in this configuration of the group (Belew, Fripp, Gunn and Mastelotto), Gunn helped evolve a new and unique instrument. This 'tapped' instrument, the Warr Guitar, is a 10-string touch guitar with the range of a piano. It can be heard, in depth, on his 8 solo recordings. 

In addition to the powerful performances and recordings of The Trey Gunn Band, Gunn has toured and/or recorded with TOOL, John Paul Jones, Maynard J. Keenan’s “Pusicfer”, Vernon Reid, Azam Ali, Michael Brook, and David Hykes of the Harmonic Choir.

2003 saw Gunn fully step into the world of multi-dimensional art forms. He began working on a series of children’s stories set in Africa, a setting of Gregory Orr’s poem “Orpheus and Eurydice” and he and Joe Mendelson gave birth to Quodia,  a new form of multi-media performance  art.

In addition to running his own media label (7d Media) and a multi-media production company (7 Directions), he is currently dividing his time between his solo work, film and television scoring, and building multi-dimensional media projects.
