Livin' To Love You

I wrote this song with my good friend, Eli Rhodes. I was inspired to write it after a trip to my hometown of Uvalde, Tx to visit friends and family. Eli and I got together to write in Nashville and I started sharing things from my trip. We both grew up in small towns so the song didn't take us long to write. Some of the characters in the song were inspired by real people, some of them weren't. We tried to capture what life in a small town is really about; the people and their stories. One thing that is true - "you never really know where you're from, until you try to leave."

I wrote this song for my fiancé. Every time she puts on her makeup she smiles in the mirror as she's doing it. I've always thought it was kind of funny and I've said for a long time that I was going to write a song about it.  One morning I sat down with my guitar and a cup of coffee and decided to write it. I came up with what would eventually be the first verse and part of the chorus - and then I got stuck. I wasn't sure where the song should go from there. I had a "date on the books" (songwriter speak for a co-write appointment) with a really talented writer in town named Michael White. I knew he was the guy to finish it with. We had to reschedule several times due to ice storms and other inclement weather - so this song almost didn't get finished. We eventually got together and the song came together pretty fast. Michael really took the song to another level and I love the way it turned out. I hope you enjoy it too! 

Last Name

     I lost my Grandpa this past November. He was an honest person, a hard worker, a family man, a straight shooter, a good Christian and the last true Cowboy. He was the kind of man that could somehow earn your respect just by shaking your hand and looking you in the eye. He was cooler than John Wayne to me.
     I didn't really even set out to write this song; it kind of wrote itself. It's my attempt to summarize a man's life in three minutes that should probably take a whole book. Of all the songs I've written or will ever write, this will always be one I'm most proud of. God gets the credit for this one - I just held the pen. Miss ya everyday Grandpa!

Cowboy's His Name

I wrote this song with Nate Montgomery. I have always heard people say "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" and one day it hit me; that sounds like a country song! I sat down with Nate to write the song and we quickly came up with a scenario where a guy is reflecting back on all of the mistakes he's made in his life and how each one put him in a different version of "hell." Like any good country song about making mistakes, there is also redemption. Whether or not we've been in the specific scenarios the guy in this song finds himself in, I feel like everyone can relate to this. We've all done things we wish we could take back - redemption changes everything.
