Turn It Up

Isolation, solitude, contemplation. These are the themes that discreetly weave their way through Disappearance, the first collaboration album between 12k’s Taylor Deupree and pioneering electronic composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto. The two began their musical dialogue in 2006 when Deupree was invited to remix a song from Sakamoto’s album Chasm. “World Citizen” was the song and it sparked continued collaboration as Deupree contributed to two of Sakamoto’s activist projects: Chain Music (http://www.sitesakamoto.com/chainmusic/) and KizunaWorld (http://kizunaworld.org/english/index.html) (as a trio with Sakamoto and Stephen Vitiello.) With the convenience of both artists living in New York they kept in touch, released music on 12k (Willits + Sakamoto’s Ocean Fire) and, in April of 2012, performed live together at John Zorn’s club The Stone. It was this concert that planted the seeds for Disappearance.

The initial tracks for Disappearance were recorded at Sakamoto’s studio in New York City during rehersals for the April concert. The two immediately entered the same sonic mindframe that lead to hours of concentrated, hushed music. Sakamoto’s piano playing, both traditional and prepared, emerged as perhaps some of his most beautifully sparse in recent years, letting the sound of the room and shuffle of chairs take an active roll in the recording. Only the most minimum of essential notes, accentuated by silences and the scraping of the piano’s strings, plays alongside Deupree’s nuanced passages, created with analogue synthesizers, strings, and found objects. These warm, human tones became the means of communication between the two artists who effortlessly created a musical language.

The five tracks that make up Disappearance are delicate and composed, however, they’re not all peacefulness and placidity. Micro-tuned edges, bursts of noise, percussive prepared piano and the warble of old reel-to-reel tape keep the mood grounded and warm, turning it inward and asking the listener to reflect on their path. “Curl To Me,” the album’s final piece, is highlighted by the sounds of Ichiko Aoba, a major up-and-coming singer/songwriter from Tokyo. Both Sakamoto and Deupree have recently worked with Aoba in Japan and wanted her presence felt on the album. Emphasizing the solitude and stillness of the recordings, Aoba provided both her voice and the almost disturbingly intimate sound of her own heartbeat.

Disappearance is a soundtrack for holding breaths. Sakamoto and Deupree lay down worn roads, but don’t leave signs, for a journey woven together by the quiet celebration of the fragility of nature and life.

They hung thick and ominous overhead, casting strange shapes and shadows upon the empty fields and plains which lay beneath. The barley could be seen blowing in the warmth of the summer breeze but it was a muggy, humid kind of heat. The kind which stuck to you and held on tight.

Heavy clouds often meant that the end was nigh, that summer was on its way out and soon the rain would fall and leave this land green and wondrous. Everything would be afloat once again, an aquatic paradise in which the wild things grew and the people danced.

For now, they simply watched as they passed overhead, moving ever more slowly, weighed down by world within them.

Pure Space are set to release a new EP from Command D. This record is titled 'New Devices' and features a collection of dubbed out ambient tones, amidst loosely dotted sporadic percussion in the ilk of Basic Channel or Deepchord etc.

Naff and Animalia once again join forces to present a collaboration between OK EG and Priori. The project began with a session at the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, where initial sonic experiments took shape. These were later developed into four interconnected movements—each crafted to feel both weightless and propulsive. The result is four high-speed, hypnotic dance pieces, best described as ‘feather-tech.

The second installment in Darwin’s curated mixes for Rhythmic Culture comes from UK duo Dual Monitor. Their boundary-pushing productions have earned them the moniker “The UK Genre Alchemists” from Rinse FM. This open-format approach to music carries through to their vibrant, kaleidoscopic DJ sets—no two ever the same. The duo deftly weaves together twisted, low-slung UK bass, skittering IDM, dancefloor-shaking tech-bow, and zoned-out dub and jungle.

Jake Hodge sent me a track they made "Step Pattern" because he was so blown away by the production and said "You need to sign this," and I did instantly not even listening to it a second time! Fliss and Zebb are hands down some of the most talented up-and-coming producers I’ve come across in a while. The speed at which they’re cranking out tunes and dubs, and the range in their sound, is unreal. On top of that, they’re two of the loveliest people to hang with. So happy to have them as part of the SPE:C family."

Marie Tjong Ayong is a Berlin-based producer, vinyl-DJ, and trumpeter.
Her sound weaves percussive lushness, warm harmonies, and genre-defying grooves into immersive, abstract sonic spaces. Airy, dreamy, and deeply groovy, her music invites listeners into a world shaped by texture and emotional depth, often reconnecting with her roots through layered sound design.
Born in 1994 to a jazz musician and a music teacher, Marie picked up the trumpet at the age of 12. From 2014 to 2019, she studied jazz trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
Her versatility and unique voice have since made her collaborator in a wide range of projects—from modern jazz ensembles like Leon Plecity’s Extraordinary Machine to Afrobeat and hip-hop collectives such as HYPNAGOGIA. She is also a member of the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld, the house band of ZDF Magazin Royale with Jan Böhmermann.
Marie Tjong Ayong’s work blurs boundaries—not only between genres, but between the tangible and the imagined.

Following his debut album last year, Sentient returns on the label with Unspeakable Periphery: Otherworld Transmission, a remix compilation that reframes his original work through the lens of a carefully curated group of artists.

From Alpha Solo’s dubbed-out abstraction to Clearlight’s tekker translation, from Soreab and La Serpiente tense rhythmic frameworks, to Left Path and Barking hypnotic and meditative zones, the compilation traverses overall percussive science and atmospheric deconstructions.

Closing the journey is a haunting illbient reinterpretation of the entire original album by Sentient himself, reassembling his own compositions into something more introspective - a stretched and fractured world somewhere adjacent to this one. As a bonus, the release also includes a continuous mix version of Unspeakable Periphery.

As a producer, DJ & label owner Cosmin Nicolae’s dedication to developing a rich and wholly personal artistic landscape provides the driving force behind one of dance music’s most unique & industrious individuals.

Opening the door on Hessle Audio over a decade ago - an outlet that has gone on to become a defining voice within electronic music in the 21st Century, Nicolae’s list of affiliations reads like a who’s who of top tier contemporary dance music record labels. Appearances on Amsterdam’s Rush Hour and Gerd Janson’s Running Back, as well as a brace of singles alongside LP’s Gordian and Simulat on the now defunct 50 Weapons - not to mention work for Semantica and Bleep, have cemented Cosmin TRG deep in the psyche of the ever shifting amoeba that is the dance music zeitgeist.

In many ways, what lies at the heart of Nicolae’s work - beyond the extraordinary pairing of high end sound design and club functionality, is an innate ability to bind his discography - to create a streamlined sonic vision without compromise, one that moves with purpose and vigour outwards to explore in depth structures that exist on the very periphery of House & Techno, Ambient & experimental electronics - but maintain a unique and recognisable finish. Few artists could boast a discography that marries 2016’s ubiquitous In Your Body, an anthemic spoken- word-meets-Tool-Techno leviathan released via Nicolae’s own club-focused Sportiv outlet, with Semnal - a gloriously executed LP of shifting, otherworldly Experimental music delivered under the artist’s given name via the Opal Tapes label.

Cult concept missive Hope This Finds You Well, Nicolae’s 2019 reflection on corporate culture furthers this same dichotomy - a stunning wide-angle Ambient LP on Fizic - the label operated by the artist as a home to more conceptual iterations, that followed hot on the footsteps of a remix for Bpitch founder Ellen Alien & the fourth instalment on Sportiv - both offerings heady club constructions in their own right.

On the road, both DJ sets and live performances mirror this healthy sentiment - with Nicolae as comfortable on main stages showcasing his take on hyper-modern propulsive Techno, as he is presenting the low slung avant-garde preoccupations of his more leftfield alias’. There’s the constant feeling that both these practices feed back into one another, and that from each respective vantage point, Cosmin TRG is able to make the kind of dynamic & intuitive artistic decisions that few can - keeping his work fresh & current without concession - ceding to his own desire to further his vision as a creator of sonic abstraction without losing sight of the dance floor.
