Premiere: Psyk "Fear of Sleep" - SCOPÁVIK

Locked and loaded, here comes the next salvo in RYC’s line of action. Going by the name “Heimat” - the German word for “homeland”, this eighteenth number in our catalogue breaks in a new series that will set the focus on exciting new names with a vision. Zeitgeisty by nature, the approach chosen for these VAs is to document state-of-the-art productions from lesser known and emerging figures, whose skills and talent we firmly believe in. An extension of our creed that techno is there to push boundaries and not reiterate the same bland assertions over and over, ad nauseam, “Heimat” shall form a shelter for top-of-the-range material and that exclusively, regardless of the producer’s fame, level of fashionability and/or market-friendliness.

Summoned on that debut platter are names you may have heard through our channels already, and some you haven’t. Drawing first blood, Brazilian talent Marcal gets the wrecking-ball swinging at fierce rate. Engineering an inch-perfect balance between Amazonian suavity and cutting-edge industrialism, the Goiânia-based whiz treats us to a mind-altering maelstrom of rainforest techno, leaving no room for improvisation whether on the rhythmic side or in terms of sound design. An absolute crusher. Another Brazilian completes the A-side, in the person of Nicolas Vogler. His track “Lost in Paradiso” is everything a mental techno pumper should be: nose-diving drum assaults, pools of lavish textures to sink your brain within, spiralling synth motifs. Epic, truly.

Mysterious on-the-rise producer Hurdslenk takes over the flip with a mammoth of a fast-paced churner, designed at nothing but sweeping legs by the dozen. True to the early 00s hi-NRG strain of techno, Hurdslenk fractures his way into the system with a proper bomb of a tune, hovering the cursor halfway Birmingham-style sonic aggression and made in Rotterdam warehouse-obliteration. Final word goes to mould.audio’s Ruben Ganev, an artist who knows all too well how to fly you off to the zone with a mere kick and surgically processed machine hoodoo with a purpose. Laser-precise and full-bodied, “Scattered” is the paragon of a masterful hypnotic ride, steering us smack-dab the middle of a weirdly claustrophobic dream with the right amount of daze-inducing envelopes and fuel-efficient percussive power.

“Heimat” comes pressed to a 100% orange transparent vinyl, and clad in a pristine, matt varnished package to please your eyes and ears in equal measure.

Premiere: Jamaica Suk "The Fall"- Gradient

Continuing his exploration of intricate techno systems, their effect and direct perimeter of action, Peter Van Hoesen turns in his newest four-track piece, ‘Prime Directive’: a fascinating dive into the artist’s shape-shifting headspace and inner creative chaos.

Fuelled on a furnace-hot mix of abstract-leaning immersion and hi-octane rhythmic thrust, ‘Prime Directive’ looks at contemporary techno from the angle of experimentation and intuitive abandon. The result comes in the form of four distinct movements, each carving out their own logic and associated behaviour out an endless pool of potentialities. Here comes chaology unfolding in all its unadulterated, visceral glory.

‘Definition by Absence’ breaks the trip in to the sound of a faux-random symphony: its train-like swing and fiery bass seesaw coalesce through an elliptic fluttering of sorts, iterative and not, patterns moving in and out of synchronicity as Van Hoesen applies more or less pressure on both ends. All in gusty in-your-face-ness, ‘Variables Edit 1’ whirls and swirls like an ominous vengeance of nature; Its puncturing kicks and whistling menace set against stellar winds and rabid machinery on the prowl for its next victim.

An even more unsettling piece of disjointedly arrhythmic, anti-club music for the dance floor, ‘Prime Directive’ will have you zoning out like a bad dream, flush with metronome-faced monsters and molten clocks hanging from dead trees. ‘Morphology’ could be PVH’s attempt at giving his concepts a carnal carcass to hold onto. Here, rhythm becomes somewhat less erratic, offering his 360-degree vision more melodic surface and actual room for dispersion. One to keep the boundaries pushed and status-quo challenged, this is techno at its most entrancingly bold and fearless.

London-based experimental vanguard SORN gear up to drop their fifth artefact ‘Rephlex’, a shape-shifting suite of tracks from the Samara-based alchemist d. towärds...For our premiere, we zoom in on ‘my mind’ - a woozy descent into percussive mirage and psychoacoustic trickery. The track opens with slippery, delay-drenched drums that slither like AI serpents in a low-gravity ritual. Hiss-stained textures ripple in the periphery, while submerged low-end pressure keeps things anchored to the earth’s core, or at least somewhere beneath it. As the piece evolves, it mutates into a chrome-dipped hybrid of electro and ancient drone, suggesting the breath of unseen biomechanical fauna roaming deep, moss-cloaked networks. Listening feels like stumbling across a buried satellite still transmitting emotional code, flickering with the echoes of something once human.

Aura Sonora returns with a second release to follow up the fantastic first one, this time it brings together two meticulous studio craftsmen, DYL & Tammo Hesselink. Their Moire Patterns EP kicks off with 'Pattern 1', a deep and rhythmic slice of rubbery techno that rides broken beats with atmospheric pulses up top. 'Pattern 2 slows down to a predatory crawl with icy pads making a dystopian vibe then 'Pattern 3' brings a sense of mystic tribal ritual deep in some futuristic jungle and 'Pattern 4' closes down with more fantastically crafted, dubby, broken rhythms that are topped with organic percussion and almost impossible not to move to. Pure rhythm science brilliance.

Today marks the launch of Uncloud Editions, a new imprint by Uncloud Festival co-founder, composer, producer, and sound artist Skander Jaïbi. To inaugurate the label, Jaïbi releases his debut album 'Who has the right to closure?'...A standout piece from the album is the opening track: a ghostly transmission, like a crackled PA system echoing in suspended sorrow. Pensive choral motifs float amid textured electroacoustic layers, evoking the spectral presence of The Caretaker and the psychoacoustic delicacy of Félicia Atkinson. With this release, Jaïbi sculpts silence and sound into something deeply affecting.

Following our recent news article on Kokong Festival, today we turn our attention to the festival’s inaugural sampler - a curated glimpse into the artists set to perform this weekend inside the iconic geodesic dome at Pub Stallhagen on Åland.

Spanning four tracks, the compilation brings together leading voices from the Nordic electronic music scene: FISK, the analog techno alias of Finnish producer and Elektron product specialist Daniel Troberg; the exploratory textures of Andreas Tilliander and jazz trumpeter Goran Kajfeš; the murky Baltic atmospheres of Havsmörker; and the pulsating club energy of Norwegian techno veteran Mental Overdrive.

Our pick from the sampler is the opening track 'Ilväder' by Scandinavian duo @havsmoorker. Comprising Anton Johansson and Axel Jonsson, the pair fuse field recordings, analogue synthesis, and traditional acoustic instrumentation into immersive folktronica and ambient works. Their sound conjures a sense of sensory navigation - foggy, spatial, and deeply intuitive.

Steeped in atmosphere, Ilväder is both murky and crystalline - a meditative piece that weaves mystical synth lines with effervescent percussion, blending natural elements like flute with earthy, ancient textures. The result is an experimental, downbeat track that gently leans toward the techno spectrum, while remaining rooted in introspection and place.

An excursion into the lesser-known territories of the Asian musical landscape, 'Ragom (Various Artists)' is the latest release from Bangkok’s enigmatic @siamesetwinsrecords. Ahead of its release, the premiere spotlight falls on Kiss Nuka’s 'Taabiir', a word that translates to “deeper interpretation (of dreams)” in Urdu. 

True to its name, the track channels Kiss Nuka's mystical insight and raw emotion through a hypnotic variation of vocal percussion, reminiscent of konakkol, the rhythmic vocal tradition of Carnatic music. Fractured beats move in procession while ghostly tones dance around them, never fully landing. Kiss Nuka constructs a sonic ecology where boundaries dissolve between inner and outer, past and present. Taabiir doesn’t demand attention; it quietly draws you in.

As a producer, DJ & label owner Cosmin Nicolae’s dedication to developing a rich and wholly personal artistic landscape provides the driving force behind one of dance music’s most unique & industrious individuals.

Opening the door on Hessle Audio over a decade ago - an outlet that has gone on to become a defining voice within electronic music in the 21st Century, Nicolae’s list of affiliations reads like a who’s who of top tier contemporary dance music record labels. Appearances on Amsterdam’s Rush Hour and Gerd Janson’s Running Back, as well as a brace of singles alongside LP’s Gordian and Simulat on the now defunct 50 Weapons - not to mention work for Semantica and Bleep, have cemented Cosmin TRG deep in the psyche of the ever shifting amoeba that is the dance music zeitgeist.

In many ways, what lies at the heart of Nicolae’s work - beyond the extraordinary pairing of high end sound design and club functionality, is an innate ability to bind his discography - to create a streamlined sonic vision without compromise, one that moves with purpose and vigour outwards to explore in depth structures that exist on the very periphery of House & Techno, Ambient & experimental electronics - but maintain a unique and recognisable finish. Few artists could boast a discography that marries 2016’s ubiquitous In Your Body, an anthemic spoken- word-meets-Tool-Techno leviathan released via Nicolae’s own club-focused Sportiv outlet, with Semnal - a gloriously executed LP of shifting, otherworldly Experimental music delivered under the artist’s given name via the Opal Tapes label.

Cult concept missive Hope This Finds You Well, Nicolae’s 2019 reflection on corporate culture furthers this same dichotomy - a stunning wide-angle Ambient LP on Fizic - the label operated by the artist as a home to more conceptual iterations, that followed hot on the footsteps of a remix for Bpitch founder Ellen Alien & the fourth instalment on Sportiv - both offerings heady club constructions in their own right.

On the road, both DJ sets and live performances mirror this healthy sentiment - with Nicolae as comfortable on main stages showcasing his take on hyper-modern propulsive Techno, as he is presenting the low slung avant-garde preoccupations of his more leftfield alias’. There’s the constant feeling that both these practices feed back into one another, and that from each respective vantage point, Cosmin TRG is able to make the kind of dynamic & intuitive artistic decisions that few can - keeping his work fresh & current without concession - ceding to his own desire to further his vision as a creator of sonic abstraction without losing sight of the dance floor.
