TRIALCAST VOLUME 23 - TOUMBA

Aisaund Sings is the debut album by UK-based DJ, producer and cultural practitioner Nahi Mitti. Following a string of exceptional self-released work, and the development of her unique style of DJing as heard on her mixes for discwoman and for Anu’s NTS show, the album aggregates the artist's explorations of expression through tempo, dynamics and prettiness into a focussed/blurry journey into stor(i/ey)ed sonic ecosystems.

Taking particular inspiration from concerns and structures of dance, rnb and gidha music(s), Aisaund Sings is a collection of the rumours of its inhabitants, with truths as weather and presence like archaeology, one that frequently remembers and/or forgets the body and the club.

Nahi Mitti would add, reading slowly and shuffling loudly through sparse notes: Aisaund is said to sing with more/less nerves/nervous system... resonance, depending on ... the humidity... “like a flute sings”? ... or maybe a phone (dry/wet), Aisaund sings ... something something ... diaspora... something... “Aisaund doesn’t sing”: ... Aisaund sings... ?

I haven't played out regularly in years and had been meaning to record a mix for some time to get something out there under my name. Last month I got to play an opening set for my friend @dj_smoke_sea 's birthday party at the same spot we used to have a night at (RIP OMW, long live Vermillion). This was the perfect kick in the pants to really put in the work of planning out a mix and recording it.

I had planned it out to be danceable and vibesy but not too bangin’ as to be jarring if the bar were completely empty. Luckily hella ppl showed up about a half hour in and I ended up playing some more energetic tracks around the end after exhausting my opener playlist. It went over v well except for the fact that I had accidentally turned the zoom recorder off seconds into my first track lol. So I re-recorded at home.....  The first hour is what I played at Vermillion and I almost left it at that but the ending track didn’t feel right as an outro so I spliced in another half hour last night to bring the energy back down and round it out.  Hope you enjoy!

Last January I was at ZULI’s, chilling with him, Rama and Marwa Belhaj. We spontaneously went in a 90’s rabbit hole. We recalled and played so much music from that era, from the trashy stuff to the MTV hits. I got so excited after that, and I remembered my mixtapes series titled “Cool Mix” I used to do in the 90’s, then I decided to record this cheerful mix.
