‘Burned’ is the new single by Tribes of Europe & Barbara Stretch, out 8th September 2023 via Integrity Records (INT 100) on digital and limited edition, hand numbered 7” lathe-cut black vinyl. The single marks a modest milestone as the 100th release for the label that’s been home to Million Dead (Frank Turner), Reuben, Miss Black America, Kat Bjelland, Ida Wenøe & many more.

Barbara Stretch, former member of 70’s Pride pioneers Spoilsports (featured in Channel 4’s recent documentary - Freedom: 50 Years of Pride), delivers perhaps her finest vocal to date on this slow-burn space-pop psychodrama. Lead-Tribesman Martin comes out of the backroom to duet in the chorus, while the Ely Fallen Angels Choir led by Max Taylor add layers of sublime polyphony and Chris Taylor’s masterful mix smoulders and ignites in all the right places.

Tribes of Europe, the alter ego of Fenland-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Martin Elsey, are joined on 'Burned' by Andy Gangadeen (Massive Attack, Chase & Status) on drums, Harry Bennett (Clor, Creepy Neighbour) on percussion, and Chris Taylor (Poison Girls, The Bays) on co-production duties amongst the resident chickens at the wonderful Bluebarn Studios in the Cambridge countryside.

Martin describes the thinking behind the new single: 

“’Burned’ is about dealing with the consequences of bad decisions. Maybe you got in the wrong car with the wrong person; maybe you shared a secret you should have kept to yourself. You wake up to the fact that your safety net is gone, or maybe was never really there. Some received wisdom you grew up with is proved wrong. How do you deal with that? Can you come out the other end stronger for the experience?”

‘Let The Big Beat Save Your Southern Soul’ is the new single by Tribes of Europe & Barbara Stretch, out 27th November 2020 via Integrity Records on all digital platforms and limited edition 7” vinyl.

Using classic pop forms to tell stories about the present, the future and, in the case of ‘Big Beat …’, the past, Tribes of Europe here surge head-long musically and lyrically into the contemporary cultural legacy of Northern Soul.  With the classic vocal of Barbara Stretch, former frontwoman of Pye Records’ soul sensations The Vernons to the fore, the Ely Fallen Angels Choir led by Max Taylor (MIKA, Lily Allen, Clor) add layers of joyous harmonies.

Tribes of Europe, the alter ego of Fenland-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Martin Elsey, are also joined by Andy Gangadeen (Massive Attack, Chase & Status, Jeff Beck) on drums, Ric Elsworth (Belle & Sebastian, Foals) on vibraphone & tambourine and Chris Taylor (Poison Girls) on co-production duties at Bluebarn Studios and the finest bass outside Motor City.

Martin describes the single as an overdue “thank you” to the rare soul scene and the people who made the music: 

“I was a young Pink Floyd fan when the Northern Soul scene hit East Anglia. Kids at school told me how their older brothers and sisters had been driving over to Peterborough, taking something called ‘Sulphate’ then staying up all night dancing. I was intrigued. Only several years later when I got along to a few all-nighters did I really start to understand …”

Eerie is the second track and probably the most talked about track off BaYaT's second album Purge and carries on from where the debut album So It Begins finished.
From the very start of Eerie you can hear the distinct BaYaT sound with beautiful melancholic harmonies mixed with some real hard rock riffs. The chorus will have you physically moving around the floor with its mouthwatering beat.
