Producer of the moment, Ewan McVicar, follows his huge ’Tell Me Something Good’, voted Best Track of 2021 by BBC Radio 1 Dance Awards and DJ Mag’s Best of British Awards, with the ‘Movin’ On Over’ EP, backed by an IKONIKA Remix, released on Optimo Music Digital Danceforce on 11 February. 

With the ‘Movin’ On Over’ EP, Ayr-born Ewan McVicar showcases his love of the underground house music scene, the older Optimo Trax releases he fell in love with, and the legendary parties at Glasgow’s iconic Sub Club, which inspired him to pursue a career making and playing music. 

The title track ‘Movin’ On Over’ encapsulates the essence of those classic Optimo Trax dancefloor cuts and presents Ewan McVicar's interpretation of the infamous Optimo parties at Glasgow’s Sub Club. The sound references Ron Hardy in Chicago’s Muzic Box with the thumping, hard cutting bass line and acid influences which makes Ewan McVicar "envisage major head bopping”! 

The hypnotic ‘Slowing Up The Freak’ is also made for sweat-soaked dance-floors. Ewan McVicar wanted to take the dancer to another, twisted place. The distorted noises and instruments used were designed “to f*ck with people on the dancefloor and slow up the freaks.” As Ewan McVicar adds, “we are all our own freak at the end of the day.” ‘Slowing Up The Freak’ is backed by a remix from IKONIKA which emphasises the trippy, freak out elements of the original. 

The shimmering ‘Which Way To Go?’ rounds off the EP perfectly. Ideal for the after-party, the track was devised late at night and features Sega computer samples and acid house basslines, to create a euphoric and spellbinding finale. 

Ewan McVicar has released on Shall Not Fade, Unknown To The Unknown, Nervous, & Trick; supported by Laurent Garnier, Roman Flügel, Paul Woolford, Melé,  Nightwave, DJ Deeon, Skream etc.

Marco Manrique and Simon Cortez, who together form Filta Freqz, showcase their versatility in their debut for DFTD, 'Master Blaster EP'. The title track 'Master Blaster' features hip-hop vocals and a swinging 4/4, accented by sax blasts and a funking bass bridge. 'Show Me', utilises a similarly direct 4/4 but is otherwise a far cry from the New York hip-hop style first track. It comes as a classic feel-good house track with soul powerhouse vocals, piano riffs and a pumping bassline. A very strong debut EP demonstrating some seriously diverse influences from the Filta Freqz duo.

After teaming up with Jamie Jones to release ‘Rushing’ earlier this summer, Darius Syrossian returns to Defected for his latest musical output. ‘Come On Come On’ sees the DO NOT SLEEP resident flex his musical muscles by exploring a range of influences throughout, engineering the same soulful vocal sample to provide two genre-defying cuts. Opening with ‘Kouka’, a track that rumbles through with its intensified bass and tension building drops set to rock the most intense of sound-systems, while the vocal interlude at its centre adds diversity and intrigue. This is followed with the title track, where Darius delivers a dose of upbeat driving house, with a rubbery bouncing bassline and a chopped-up version of the vocal, delivering serious end-of-summer vibes. By exploring a number of avenues of sound with the same sample, ‘Come On Come On’ shows Darius’ breadth of musical knowledge, with a release that will keep a crowd on their toes.

A six-track release, ‘Fun Is Fun’ opens with the infectious, synth-driven title track, with a dub version and ‘Mamacita version’ also making it onto the record. Next up, ‘Dancefloor Anarchy’ is a similarly slick cut, while ‘Kill Your Friends’ is 140bpm and harnesses a killer bassline and unnerving scream sample to devastating effect.  

“The title track ‘Fun Is Fun’ is a heavy bassline track, meant as a provocative poem, or as a joke you tell your friends who DJ,” Kessler explains. “When I did this track I was smiling because it’s my message not to take yourself too serious in this business. I think that's a big problem all over this scene.”

Darius's latest project is his label Moxy Muzik which launched its first release back in December 2018, the labels first release from Darius with his 'Dance of The Shaman' original rapidly landed in that coveted No.1 spot, and the labels output has been heavily supported by Laurent Garnier, Derrick May and Kerri Chandler. Now after turning just 1 year, the boss is back with his 2-part Ying Yang EP to kick
off 2020. Part 1 is Darius's 'Soul Fire' original mix accompanied by a killer remix from young Italian producer Dimmish, which is set to be released digitally on the 28th February.

Opening with 'Soul Fire' with its skippy percussion and energetic bassline, it nods back to the 90s US House inspired by artists like Junior Vazquez and Chez Damier. 'This was a sound which first got me into all this music' says Darius. Dimmish takes the original motifs and injects his trademark Italian flair for a more upbeat peak-time groover.

Originally written purely for his own sets, ‘Youreoneofakind’ and ’Somebody Scream’ see the
Berlin-based DJ turn in two of his biggest tracks to date. Having caught the ear of Patrick Topping, the tracks were snapped up and an official release is set to drop through Trick this summer. The title track sees Parker wrapping his trademark, energy fuelled house beats and propellant arrangement skills around tightly looped horns and percussion while soaring, overlaid strings provide an emotive foil to the titular vocal refrain.
’Somebody Scream’ on the flip welds a clipped and filtered vocal scream to more of Parker’s robust house beats before hammering piano licks cut through the mix, driving the track towards hair raising, full on disco breaks.

Precision kicks, pitter-patter effects and an escalating melody are joined by a spoken word sample in the bouncy ‘SMML’, before moving into ‘turboshandy’ with its springy bassline, lively synth stabs and heady pitched up vox. Tying things together, ‘heavy bad yin’ is a rumbling cut that powers onwards courtesy of robust drums, swinging hats and a squelchy acid lead.
