A while back Pratt & Moody hit the global soul scene with their Stylart debut 7" "Lost Lost Lost", leaving many exclaiming the words "FIRME ROLA" on its tracks. Some even mistook it for a forgotten oldie. Now this vocal/guitar duo gets together with Cold Diamond & Mink for another dose of grade A soul music.

Not breaking the spell of tautology started with the first 45, "Words Words Words" picks up the tempo from ballad territory into the beat heavy group soul category. The pulsing drum track is laced with majestic horn riffs, tremolo guitar, penny arcade organ, and over everything hover the beautiful lyrics by Pratt and his mysterious harmony singers.

If the first single by Pratt and Moody left you yearning for more soul, this one should blow away the rest of your corporal existence.

I wanted to create a live, unedited mix that is a complete representation of my experience as a Chicanx born and raised in Southern California. I grew up highly influenced by the cultura of border towns. Mi familia is from Mexicali, Baja California and I was raised in Chula Vista, California neighboring the San Ysidro / Tijuana, Mexico border. During my adolescent years, I was part of the punk scene in San Diego and attended back yard shows in my hometown, as well as Logan, and Shelltown. Although I dressed the part of a punk and hung out with friends within the subculture, it was my Tios that had initially introduced me to oldies, new wave, classic rock and Black Sabbath. My mother instilled the love for classic Spanish oldies, romanticas, and Juan Gabriel. I developed what I call a Rockera Soulera identity. Music became my saving grace and my primary form of self-expression. 

When I turned 21 years old, my friends and I started going to an oldies and old skool night called Sleepwalking at Whistlestop bar. There my love for oldies, sweet soul and funk grew, and I knew I had found a second home. I'm now 30 years old and still support my local punk and soul scene. From the progressive ethos embedded in punk to the passionate lyrics in soul music, I truly believe these two genres encapsulate the very core of who I've become, and the political views I uphold as a Chicanx, social worker and community DJ. The songs in this mix are groups/bands that have shaped my past, current and future.

I strongly believe that there is a correlation between the two genres and Chicanx - Latinx culture that I'm now working on a zine regarding Soul Punks and their stories. If any listener out there can relate, send me an email for an interview:
