The initial intention was to assemble sounds in a way that would allow me to find traces of fairy tales in their synchronicity. I was set to prove our dependency on the hopeful escape farytales provide. The final product, instead, surrenders to a fractured narrative condition, where we can overhear familiar sounds or words, but are not given the chance to hear them divulge on their changing nature.

On Play Pretend & Other Girl Sports

On Play Pretend & Other Girl Sports is a text-based audio work that can be described as an expanding sound environment. The work was created with the intention of investigating the theoretical and ideological scaffolding behind fairy tales and stories, the expressive potential they present beyond linearity and classical morality, and the importance that ̀ these narrative structures have had in defining our collective and personal identities. On Play Pretend & Other Girl Sports seeks to reinterpret the process of identity co- struction, presenting the listener with an open-ended and multifaceted character. What is sketched is the figure of a girl engaged in relentless self-discovery. This identity is given shape through the language of sound, offering rambling narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy, in an attempt to  reinterpret the memory of the periods of childhood and adolescence.

The text was an outcome of a collective writing process, bringing together personal memories and shared references. The audio was curated by Paloma Pertot who in On Play Pretend & Other Girl Sports, assumes the role of the storyteller by adjusting, through sound mixing, the moods and tones of the work, guiding the listener through her voice, detourning the typical narrative structure of the classic sound fairy tale. The resulting mix is an organic assemblage of film and environmental sampling, electronic production, and musical remodulations.
