I first flipped Greta Van Fleet’s "Black Smoke Rising" over a year ago, captivated by its raw energy and message about resilience in the face of struggle. The original song carried a sense of revolution, a rise against the odds, and that spoke to me on many levels, both as an artist and as a person. I was inspired by the idea of smoke rising as a symbol of transformation—whether personal or collective—and I wanted to capture that in my flip, reworking it with my signature sound while staying true to its core meaning.

Fast forward to now, and the track holds a completely new weight. Recently, the Elk Fire tore through parts of Wyoming, including areas where I grew up and camped. The fire left a lasting scar on the mountains I’ve known my whole life, reducing them to ashes. It wasn’t just a physical loss—it felt like a piece of my past went up in smoke along with it. Releasing this flip now, during this time of reflection and loss, has taken on a deeply personal meaning for me.

Though this flip wasn’t written about the fire, it now serves as my way of processing the emotions that have come up in the aftermath. The mountains I love, the land that shaped who I am, have been forever changed. Through this release, I hope to express not just my connection to the original song’s message of rising up, but also my feelings about the transformation of the landscape I call home. It’s my way of confronting the devastation while also holding onto hope, because even in the wake of destruction, there’s always something new rising from the smoke.

This release is a blend of my love for the original track and my need to address the loss that so many in Wyoming, myself included, are feeling. "Black Smoke Rising" now speaks to me on an even deeper level—about the resilience not only of people, but of nature itself.
