BMVMT004 - North Phase - L.E.S.S EP

Back once again, BODY MVMT hits its stride with the L.E.S.S EP from North Phase (AKA label head Rob James and Burnski). Four releases deep now, bossman Rob showcases the label’s breadth and depth; each release so far exploring the nuances of underground club music, dance floor energy expressed through a variety of styles. North Phase step up with three original cuts, plus a rework from Maher Daniel, utilising the outlet’s open format to delve into a range of sounds. 

The EP begins with ‘Look Around’, a breakbeat-driven roller with sultry vocal clips and intergalactic effects. Laser synth lines are emitted from the background as a funky bassline chugs along, the mysterious female vocal oozing alluring energy throughout. 

As the title suggests ‘Electronic Funk’ takes us into vintage electro territory, with its squelchy 808 motif and groovy low end. The breaks slap and clap with aplomb, sending your body into uncontrollable movements. This is the epitome of the label’s ethos: BODY MVMT at its finest. 

‘Sun Raves’ completes the trio of original cuts, taking the vibe down a touch with a solemn mood pervading throughout. This cut has been composed with poise and elegance, the considered approach to breaks and arrangement infiltrating your mind and keeping you locked in from start to end. 

Maher Daniel reworks ‘Sun Raves’, leaving his own unique sonic fingerprints all over the exhibit. Daniel adds more oompf to the track, with retro percussion and space age atmospherics transforming into an interplanetary odyssey. A fitting way to close the EP as we’re launched into the vast expanse of the universe…

fka boursin is a DJ and producer out of Bristol, UK. 
Previously known as DJ Boursin, he is recognized for his deep, ambient-infused house music that explores political dimensions of clubs and identity politics.

Welcomed into the Scissor & Thread fold, fka boursin shares two cuts of deep and introspective electronic music. 

The original Listless Intertext is a hazy trip through ambient soundscapes, shuffling rhythms and half-caught conversations, drifting across a 12 minute run time that slowly evolves and shifts with time.  

"Listless Intertext is a track centred around the "failed" employment of cheap vocoder software that attempted to process explicit words and phrases across 11 minutes." says fka boursin. "Instead, the vocoder output made any words indecipherable and I was left with thematic vagueness. The final text of the track is simply a submission to its own limitations with some french thrown in."

When label bosses Frank & Tony step up for their Housebeat Dub, they keep the essential mood but introduce a thick, fat groove that works just as well in conveying the mood. 

"Our remix is a strictly dancefloor approach," says Frank, "an extended psychedelic beat rework perfect for late night, early morning vibes".
