"Stuck in the 9-5 grind, stifled by the impersonality of constant social media and mobile interaction, contemporary urban life can be suffocating. For a certain breed, release cannot be found in the vast, unpopulated great outdoors. Urban Animals congregate in heaving warehouses, seeking solace in the liberating beats of the kick drum. They are bound not by association, but through a shared experience of primal relief felt in those shadowy, dance floor corners swelling with the sounds of low end frequencies and brazenly sculpted grooves. This is the Urban Animal’s jungle.

Claude VonStroke’s third original album and the 100th release for dirtybird is indebted to this bold and bestial inner-city lifestyle, but it’s also a product of its creator; a unique subspecies steeped in that San Franciscan sound, intersecting unknown terrain on instruction of the inimitable dirtybird label boss. Just as Urban Animal’s artwork reconstructs photography of derelict city architecture from Detroit and the Midwest into three compelling animal portraits, so too has Claude VonStroke sampled unexpected sounds from his chaotic working environment to create the nine intriguing tracks that make up his full length composition. Think of VonStroke as a modern day, West Coast Frankenstein, his creature a rugged arrangement of the most discordant, unlikely parts whilst somehow brimming with beauty and human appeal.

With the sole cut on the package, ‘Phantom’, we’re treated to Snapes’ signature frenetic and bass heavy style, laid out over its seven-minute duration with gritty broken rhythms, whispering vocal murmurs and fluttering, resonant synth licks. Since moving to Los Angeles, Sacha Robotti has been doubling down on the Dirtybird-esque niche he's been swimming in for the past few years, and he's on the headlining SlothAcid tour this fall across the American home front as the European expat continues his US dominance. His latest releases on labels like This Ain't Bristol & Desert Hearts have continued to receive set play amongst his peers, and Sacha's long overdue for his NEST HQ MiniMix bout. Channel Tres grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. His voice is effortlessly deep, as if Barry White didn't realize he was Barry White. "Controller", Channel's debut single on Godmode (Yaeji, Shamir), took classic Detroit house and reimagined it with the surly attitude of West Coast rap. Pitchfork, NPR, Gorilla vs. Bear, BBC Radio 1, Spotify, Apple, and KCRW were early champions, along with Australia's esteemed Triple J radio, who put "Controller" in full rotation.

In advance of his self-titled debut EP (out July 27 on Godmode), Channel blesses us with "Jet Black", another taste of his unorthodox union of four-on-the-floor and Compton. The song is an oozy ode to the blackest of black, over a ferocious modular synth instrumental that takes cues from industrial and early electro. "I never reply when you hit me/ I'm off the grid you can't get me" – it's hard not to feel invincible when this one plays. The video, directed by cult filmmaker Anthony Sylvester, captures Compton at its most contorted, where barbershops double as churches, where liquor stores become after-hours raves.
