Nina Kraviz launches her трип (pronounced ‘trip’) label with a double-EP compilation entitled ’The Deviant Octopus’, featuring a pair of brand new productions from Kraviz alongside material from Terrence Dixon, emerging talent Parrish Smith & Bjarki, and veteran producers Exos & Steve Stoll.

The idea for трип has been gestating for some time with Nina Kraviz, an avid crate-digger and frequenter of numerous second-hand record stores, who has long wanted to begin a label of her own which would build on some of the principles of her beloved 90s techno labels in terms of attitude and aesthetics, whilst looking for forward-thinking modern productions that reflect her core tastes for idiosyncratic electronic music.

The art and title of 'The Deviant Octopus' comes from a single-sentence scenario dreamt up by Kraviz: “Without a moment's notice an Octopus appeared and devoured everyone in sight”. Supplied with this scenario, artist Tombo rendered his own unique visualization for the artwork that adorns the release sleeve. It's Kraviz's own nod to the labels that inspire her and grab her attention while digging through second hand records, the best of which were imbued with the unique personality of the people behind them. This extends to the sound Kraviz intends for трип: dusky, divergent and trippy music to stimulate brains, dreams and fantasies.

In this respect ‘The Deviant Octopus’ is a perfect introduction: Kraviz herself is represented on the tracklist by two new tracks that take up the mantle of last year’s Mr Jones EP by returning to the vocal-flecked hypnotic techno that marked out that release. Complimenting those are two new cuts from a true master of hallucinatory off-kilter techno, Terrence Dixon in his Population One guise.

Joining them will be a pair of names from the techno pantheon who have been huge influences on Kraviz: with a career that’s taken in releases on Synewave, Trax, Novamute and Richie Hawtin’s early-90s Probe Records, Steve Stoll has been mining his own variant on techno and acid minimalism for over twenty years, heading up the Proper NYC label and releasing under various pseudonyms, such as Cobalt, of which Kraviz has been a long-term fan. His counterintuitively titled ‘Pop Song’ sits alongside a 13-minute 90s techno excursion from Reykjavik’s Exos - the only previously-released cut (originally appearing on Thule Records sub-label Plast Trax in 1998) - together illustrating that трип will also live up to its name in the geographical sense: showcasing great music from historically vibrant electronic music scenes outside of the usual Detroit-Berlin axis.

With Kraviz looking to build a small repertory of talent around трип, this first release also makes room for two newer names: Bjarki is an Icelandic talent to keep a firm eye on, who drew Kraviz’s attention in a chance meeting after a gig at Copenhagen’s Culturebox club, after which he passed her a collection of mind-bendingly odd demos; while Parrish Smith is a talented Netherlands-based producer whose short yet impactful sketch ‘1.0 / 8.0 Afrika Genocide’ brings the second 12” to a bewitching close.

All tracks on ‘The Deviant Octopus’ will feature on Nina Kraviz’s DJ Kicks compilation, out in January 2015 on !K7 Records.

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

Mr Beatnick is a scholar and a gentleman - a bona fide expert in everything soulful and strange, from jungle to Sun Ra, broken beat to retro drum machines, a very fine DJ indeed, and a general man about London town. In addition, since he turned his hand to four-to-the-floor beats with the majestic "Synthetes" in 2011, he's slyly become one of the best synthetic disco producers in the world. This one had us smiling and swaying in the office on first play, and will sound like pure gold in a party situation.

Inside Out is a brand new series that invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. Coming from Aus Music label head and DJ-Kicks curator Will Saul, the concept encourages artists to showcase their own music and or the music of those in their own individual circles. The mix will be release digitally and on CD, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl.

Each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. It is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, A&R as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. Depending on who is at the helm, Inside Out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while DJs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. The results will be a window into an artist’s world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album.
The idea stems from Will Saul’s own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. That feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer.

"I wanted to try and recreate the feeling I used to get in the 90's when you went clubbing and heard your favourite DJ play but had never heard the vast majority of the tracks he/she was playing,” explains Will. “Your mind would be constantly blown by hearing totally new music for the first time. We've pretty much lost this with the proliferation of online mixes, Shazam, early EP premieres and free streams.”

For Will’s mix he enlists an array of artists who he’s worked with over the years, many of whom have released on one of his labels in that time. These include the likes of Lone, Pearson Sound, Move D, Gerd, Youandewan, Martyn, Falty DL, Dauwd, Appleblim and Marquis Hawkes.

Will’s mix shows off the many facets of his own DJ sets, productions and labels over the last 15 years. It includes a Floorplan remix of tracks he’s made as Primitive Trust, and a collaboration with Komon on ‘Positive’, a perfect sci-fi house track that surges through the night on a wave of serene synth smears and cosmic melodies. The mix overall exudes a woozy warmth, and ranges from hazy late night house to absorbing passages of sparse dub via rubbery techno rollers and slippery electro. A lot is packed into the trip, making it perfectly fluid and forever on the move.

At a time when music is more accessible and available than ever, a strong curatorial ear and expert insight into specific sound worlds has never been more valuable to guide us through the noise. Inside Out is exactly the companion you need.

Here we find a couple of heavyweights facing off with one of the centre pieces of Orgue Electronique's acclaimed "Strange Paradise" album. On the one hand we have Kink & Neville Watson (an unlikely pair blabla but you know all that) with a swooning but rather pressing epic that unexpectedly turns into a harmonious vortex. And once you've crossed it's event horizon it proceeds to quite exquisitely tear you to shreads. Marvel as you turn into jelly and watch your legs grow longer and longer in what not only seems like an eternity, but actually *is* cause umm technically, like, there ain't no time in a black hole dude! Code!! Speaking of which, if you ever do make it to the other side, you will find up 'n cummer Willie Burns (who is known to many as the Brooklyn Budgie Smuggler) oldschool Jacking the faders with two of the sikkest organic beat tracks north of the corpse of Ron (who is in a dead heat with Jimi, Jim and James in the race for most desecrated musician in like 4evah). Anyhow, these jamz come courtesy of the SP12. Feel it feel it feel it feel it... boom knock out!

On our sixth release we are thrilled to add a new name to our roster. Cameo Blush is the project of John Dunk from London. Some might already know him as a member of Ross From Friends live.

Listening to The „Murky Waters“ EP, it is hard to believe this actually is Cameo Blush's debut release. Every track is oozing  with emotional depth, invention and a purposeful confidence. 

„Murky Waters“, all glistening arpeggios and seductive alien vocals, sounds like a hyperkinetic dollie shot through a Manga style metropolis. „Hypervisibility“  then is taking clues from masters of abstract Electronica like Isolée, Lusine and Boards Of Canada, creating an audible allegory of longing  and sensuality.  „Prophet Paradise“ on the b-side soundtracks the holodeck projection of a dayglow beach under a neon sun. And finally, „Year 2000 Problem“ resumes the futuristic Manga theme evoking images of bots passing the Turing test, overflowing with joy and falling desperately in love .

Cameo Blush is currently working on a live set which he will premiere during the Touch From A Distance takeover at this years' Field Maneuvers festival . Keep your eyes and ears peeled and remember where you heard it first!

A tasty 4-track sampler featuring highlights from some of our upcoming releases. @bengomori curates another unputdownable VA with four killer tracks from new, emerging and resurgent names from four different countries that have been getting big reactions of late.
Copenhagen's genius-like "Paxton Fettel" has been destroying dancefloors with his piano-heavy, joyous sound recently on labels like Delusions Of Grandeur and Greta Cottage Workshop. "I'd Like To Know You Better" is another fist-pumping jam that oozes positivity. London DJ "Kristy Harper" makes her debut in the production world with the slinky, pared-back disco groove of "Uncle Jungle" - an earworm of a track which she has been consistently pestered for when playing in her sets.
Sub Club resident Harri has been slaving away over new material as one half of Glasgow duo "Manakinz" alongside his bud Max, with their heavyweight, relentlessly building and layered house sounds exemplified on the extremely potent "Robopubez (Rust In Peace)". Sounds from South Africa round off the EP, as now-London-based talent "Maxime Alexander" turns out a phat acid-house-rap jam with fellow SA rapper $hakes' irresistible delivery on hand.
