Temptation lurked behind the trees. As I walked across a clearing, I heard them singing. Between the leaves, the sounds poured out. From the branches it had to come. I called, I screamed, I lost my voice. All I wanted was to get back to the cave. Evening was already here, darkness was coming. Quickly the tropical sun would leave the day behind. I had to go back, the climb was a mortal danger in the darkness. But the melody forced me to follow it. The melody was so beautiful. Again I screamed. Who are you, what do you want? Leave me alone! Go away, just go away. Please, go away. The thorns tore my skin again, the fear drove my pulse through my organs. The grace of the sound brought tears to my eyes. I cried without restraint. Where are you, where are you going? I stood among the palm trees, the melody lost on the edge of the beach. The sun was sinking behind the ocean. A tropical storm was brewing over the horizon, lightning flashed many miles away across the beguiling color gradient of the sky.

Our guest musician Wassu, who has already released on Anjunadeep and all day i dream, captures with his set the emotional chaos of autumn, which triggers the grace of the sounds. Stirred, enraptured... agitated, confused...

Sometimes I turn up to a gig for my 6am slot, and the room is pitch black, deafening, and sweat is dripping off the roof, and I think, hmm, what should I play?

A lot of my solo tracks aren't quite right for this sort of atmosphere, so I've been working on a new project designed more for dark sweaty holes in which we like to spend our weekends.

It's a collaboration with someone I have been working with for many years, who is releasing under the new name - Satirist. The first vinyl + digital release coming next week on Berlin's Killekill label. No pretty melodies this time. The name I will be releasing this work under is - SKEW (because it's a bit off).

A Brief History: Nick Warren & Nick ‘Tripswitch’ Brennan 

The two Nicks first connected in 2006, when Warren contacted Brennan to license the Tripswitch track ‘Roll Your Own’ for his Global Underground ‘GU30 Paris’ compilation, and subsequently took a second track ‘Strange Parallels’ which the latter had been writing for his 2nd Tripswitch album ‘Geometry’. 

Following the incredible success of the GU compilation, the pair kept in contact and over time became good friends, with Warren becoming something of a mentor to Brennan, particularly when the latter launched his first label Section Records and then started to broaden his productions from chillout into progressive house. Who better to ask advice than the Godfather! 

In 2011 Warren remixed the Tripswitch track ‘Collider’ for Section, and then included it in his ‘Balance 018’ comp. In 2013, Warren again nabbed two new Tripswitch tracks – ‘Still Seas’ and ‘Sick Teckers’ – for his Renaissance ‘The Masters Series: Part 18’ comp, and the same year the pair DJ’d back-to-back at the exclusive Kimberley Festival. 

With their musical tastes so aligned going right back to the 1980’s, it was inevitable that given the right opportunity the two would eventually collaborate in the studio, and in 2016 just such an opportunity arose with the first release on Warren’s new The Soundgarden label, where they joined forces to remix the Joey Fehrenbach track ‘Wolves’. 

The studio chemistry worked like a dream and the pair turned in a belting, swirling, nu-disco remix that complemented the leftfield-electro original perfectly and, soon after, the two Nicks were planning their next outing, which came in the form of their first original production together – ‘Savannah’. 

Originally released in a slowed down form on Hernan Cattaneo’s ‘Balance presents Sudbeat’ compilation, it was then given the Sudbeat single release treatment at the original tempo, along with remixes from Guy Mantzur and Mariano Mellino.  ‘Savannah’ went on to become one of the hottest progressive releases of 2017.

When Brennan launched his new onedotsixtwo imprint in summer 2017, with its focus on releasing the highest quality progressive house music, this was the perfect excuse for another set of collaborative studio sessions, and ‘Voight Kampff’ (ODST0003) is the dazzling result. 

With another collab already underway and a fifth in the pipeline for later in the year, this is an alchemic production partnership that plays to the strengths of both artists and is set to bear delicious fruit for a long time to come.

For a veteran chillout producer to successfully navigate the transition to sought-after producer / remixer and DJ within the Progressive House scene, is not an easy ask. But Nick Brennan a.k.a. Tripswitch has done just that – and with distinction. It was his Tripswitch ‘Vagabond’ album (Iboga Records, 2016) that cemented his highly rated status as a key dance producer beyond doubt. The album rose to the top of the Beatport charts, hitting #1 in Electronica and holding at #2 in Progressive House for 3 months.
