“DEREVAUN SERAUN” is a piece I wrote a couple years back in five movements for voice, piano and string trio. Each movement is written about a different piece of literature, exploring the value I see in each work and the impression it has made on me, and there is nothing more to it than that. The pleasure of books – of good verse and stories and ideas – is a very simple thing, and I felt that some lofty unifying theme for the entire piece would be a betrayal of that belief. I think that when a work resonates with you it is an instinctive response to something. You can be taught to understand a challenging book, but not to feel affection for it; I think a lot of conversation around art, especially around literature, sometimes forgets this. In my experience, the art I like the most, irrespective of its 'difficulty', is the art I can advocate most directly and plainly, and about which I can say: “I read this piece and now I do not read or think in the same way that I did before”, or: “This is a story that I could not explain to someone; I do not understand it word-for-word, yet I feel like innately I understand the whole, and that the whole spoke to me”. Jessica Moss shares an excerpt of a work in progress, recently recorded live in her rehearsal space, that offers a lovely preview of new material to which concertgoers may find themselves treated in 2018 (alongside her debut opus Pools Of Light).

"Untitled 3" displays various techniques and influences that lie at the heart Moss's solo music: building stacked slow-burn string themes through live looping, sampling and pitch-shifting that beautifully balance drone and melody, gradually introduce further electronic, oscillation and synthesis textures, and channel folkways tropes from Eastern Europe and the Middle East – in this case, gesturing towards the Klezmer tradition perhaps most explicitly since her work in the mid-2000s with Black Ox Orkestar.

Rob Burger is an accomplished keyboardist and composer whose storied career comprises film soundtracks and other compositional work, as well as meaningful contributions to the albums of artists such as John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, and Iron & Wine with whom he maintains an ongoing working relationship. Burger rightfully brings his skills and nuanced sensibilities to the fore on The Grid, an LP that recombines neo-classical soundscapes, Harmonia-esque kosmische, and jaunts of 20th-century exotica into a multigenre quilt-work all his own. As a listening experience, the album ranges meanders gracefully between the jovially playful, the contemplative-- and occasionally the menacingly stark-- with masterful ease.

Have you ever taken care of someone for years to the point where you become a vessel, an enabler for this person? [You] feels a million light years away, a glimmering spot in the Cosmos. But then one day your vessel self gets a break and travels in light years through the sharpest black and reunites with You after all those years. You were just hanging there, forgotten, and you realize you've missed yourself more than you've ever missed anyone before. 

But after you've exploded and levitated all over the carpet it doesn't take long, a couple of days perhaps, to go missing this other person you've been necessarily enabling and loving. And perhaps loosing yourself so completely was worth it just for that comeback.
