Refractions

This track utilized some strangely pitched loops of Greg’s violin that were made to sound like an old organ. I love the texture and intimacy in that sound, and to me the song represents the feeling of closeness and comfort of being with close friends in the dark winter months.

Solstice

This is my first remix I've ever done - and I found it to be an interesting
and surprising process. Rather than remixing like a traditional producer,
I took some of melodic elements and re-harmonized them in a new
context. It felt a bit more like jamming with musicians than remixing a
tune. Taking Tristan's lovely textures, string parts and Fabiano's melody

The Aurora Principle - Sen (Tristan de Liège Remix)

小雨 (Kosame) in Japanese means “light” or “gentle” rain. It is an interesting concept for a specific kind of soft rain you might find on spring mornings. I wanted to name this album after a specific idea or concept that really captured it, and in this case the Japanese word fared better than an English translation. Most of these tracks were written and developed in late Fall of 2016 to early 2017. At that time, I had only been living in Los Angeles briefly. It was the first time I had experienced a true season of rains; often these rains were very gentle and would last through the night until mid to late morning before they dissipated, leaving a beautiful refreshing and cool air, blue skies, and green hills. This gave me a particular sense of tranquility and lightness, which in turn influenced the way I was writing and thinking about music. In particular, I strove to create songs that had a meditative feel to them. As with my previous work, I tried to keep the compositions intuitive and free-flowing, almost like a stream of consciousness, rather than based on a certain predefined concept or framework. I also brought in vocals for the first time, with local vocalists Selina Carerra and Carly Barnette, whom I met at small intimate shows in Los Angeles. The album also features some recordings from other friends, such as Yvette Holzwarth (collaborator with Tethys) and Parker Law and Connor Malloy on drums. This was also my first album recording drums, which was an exciting and interesting learning process. The photographs upon which the album art is based were taken in San Francisco in late Fall 2016, just after a light rain, and thus represent the core mood of the album. Jioni

“Maisha” is the Swahili word for life.

This album to me expresses the feeling of embracing life in all its forms, with its different perspectives, moods, sounds, energies. In contrast to previous work, which was somewhat more reflective, this album was made with a lot of creative energy and drive. When starting each track I felt like I was overflowing with ideas that I had to try out and get down as soon as possible. Sometimes the inspiration would come from listening to various new albums on Bandcamp from around the world: jazz, African folk, hip-hop, Neo-soul, funk, afrobeat. Other times the inspiration would come simply from biking around Los Angeles and taking in sights and sounds from different parts of the city.

I think there can easily be pressure when making to album for it to feel as though each album has to embody a sophisticated concept or make some specific statement. Albums expressing abstract concepts or political or social statements are important for the musical culture, to be sure; but music is also an expression of where the artist is at spiritually, emotionally, and creatively at a certain point in time. This is what Maisha means for me. It represents the joys, excitements, and bursts of creative feeling, as well as the tranquility and nostalgia that I felt at times while making it. With this work, as with my previous work, I am ever seeking to defy genre. Of course, it’s clear that downtempo and trip-hop music form the backbone of what I am doing, but I am also trying to challenge those labels all the time by exploring different rhythms, scales, arrangements, and instruments.

I hope this album helps you find inspiration to express yourself or explore in whatever ways are possible or speak to you in your life, as it did for me.

Usawa (feat. ONYI LOVE)

In Spring 2018 Keno aka David Hanke from Lübeck (Germany) and Tristan de Liège from Los Angeles met through mutual friends. Their similar taste in music quickly led them to join forces and create music together. What started with a single track, turned quickly into an EP and at the end it became a full album.

Although the two have never met in person, the music they created took shape via sending recordings back and forth, text, email, and the occassional phone call over the atlantic ocean. This manner of collaboration inspired the album title 'Transatlantyk'

'Speak the Language' is the first single taken off their album 'Transatlantyk' and features the wonderful vocals and lyrics by French singer Elodie Rama who joined them for three tracks on the album.
