Famitracker Bits - Lunar March (GBC-style)

6 minutes and 45 seconds. 6 minutes and 45 whole seconds of Game Boy Color-styled music based off one of the saddest songs ever made by the pony fandom, done in one whole NSF/FTM file. This is, without a doubt, the LONGEST track I've ever done for Famitracker Bits, and I outright refused to split it up because I'm a crazy person. Roughly 5-7 days to make it, if I'm not mistaken. Worth every second.

Starting off, as before it's GBC-styled. Meaning with no triangle I was limited to 3-4 sound channels depending on whether or not I was using Noise, which I wasn't, so it's on the lower end. To cap it off, one of them was almost exclusively the 'Strong Deep Strings' in the case of GBC "Triangle", which limited me to two channels used for the actual song. Not a lot of room to work with. DPCM was used solely to adjust the tempo and structure of each row.

In the process of creating this track, I listened to Lullaby for a Princess over and over again to see if I was on the right track. A string instrument was used for Celestia's "voice", and piano was used liberally throughout. I also added in a couple of the touches MEMJ added in her cover of this song (as you can most plainly hear at 4:04, or 1D-1E in Famitracker itself), because that was the one I was listening to. Finally, let me just say that the change from 4|4 to 3|4 and from there back to 4|4   made me adjust for that, and the semi-frequent tempo shifts threw me off sometimes.

Overall, it was a little tough, but I'm happy with what I got done. Hope you enjoyed it!

Okay, so this track is one of the first I have on the .nsf file I'm making a bunch of these GBC-style Famitracker Bits in. Well...kind of. It's based off the flashback to when Twilight and Cadence were fillies, and I started making this track after listening to The L-Train's cover of it for 'The Crystal Pendant', but never got around to finishing it until late yesterday. After finishing 'Tree of Harmony' I decided to go ahead and finish it, so it'd get off my mind. Not that it was a bad idea, the song is great, and is very cute for what it is.

I think the main inspiration that was going through my head when making it was the Fairy Fountain theme from A Link to the Past, which has a higher pitch than in most of the games that song appears in. However, it was interesting trying to port the song to Zelda III's soundfont.

I've been meaning to do this song in Famitracker Bits for a while now, ever since the game, Yooka-Laylee, was announced and ever since the first music was released for it. If there's one thing I can say about Grant Kirkhope, it's that he's an extremely talented video game musician.

Much like the Anton & Coolpecker demakes I did a while back (which I HAVE been adjusting and touching up, actually), this is meant to resemble the Game Boy Color's limitations in all but authenticity (it's still composed in Famitracker, except I don't use the NES triangle or DPCM). It's also made in an attempt to resemble the GBC tunes of the era. Not much else to say beyond that except good luck to the staff at Playtonic Games!

Famitracker Bits: Jungle World (Yooka-Laylee) (GBC-Style)

The physical retail release: One small step for shovel, one giant leap for Yacht Club Games! (Seriously, congrats on getting approved as a publisher for retail! Wish you guys the best going forward.)

I originally designed this as an SNES-style track, actually. I was bored one night and decided to mess around with the ALTTP soundfont, and then I created an original track in the vein of (Super) Shovel Knight. Then I ported it to Famitracker for the sake of consistency. Then over the course of months after I had finished the NES port I touched and tweaked it several times before finally releasing it today.

This is a hypothetical fan-music based off of a hypothetical warrior from space...ASTRO KNIGHT! I mean, seriously, you have all the makings of a unique Shovel Knight villain: cool helmet, a chance to parody Darth Vader (or another similarly-helmeted villain), and an excuse to make a space-themed level a la Duck Tales. Plus, Astro Knight. Astronaut. It makes too much sense not to do it at some point.

As for the track itself, I messed around a LOT with the various effects Famitracker had to give it a more techno sci-fi feel. It's not as pronounced in this track... (1/2)

Famitracker Bits: "One Small Step" - Astro Knight's Lair (Shovel Knight-style fanmusic) (VRC6)

...but the techno sound effects are much more pronounced in the boss remix.

Yeah, after making the NES version of "One Small Step", I decided to make a boss variation of it. I wanted it to feel much more intense than its stage variant. One of the things that made that feeling much more doable was the octave limit. For regular sounds, it's passable, but for triangles, it worked incredibly well for the 'beep' sound effect that I needed. (In both songs, it contains a clicking sound that also works in favor of their sci-fi nature).

That's really about it, though. I had fun making these tracks, and I'm glad to finally release them after holding off for so long. (2/2)

It's been roughly 3 years. 3 years of pony content since The Canterlot Wedding aired. You have one of the best pieces of background music in the entire show on showcase, perhaps William Anderson's magnum opus, and NOT A SINGLE ONE OF YOU has made an 8-bit remix of it yet? Fandom, you disappoint me sometimes.

As before, this is GBC-Style (meaning no triangle, only FDS faux-triangle). I tried to recreate the original BGM as best as I could within those limitations, but apparently there's also not sheet music (or synthesia) for this, meaning I was stuck writing it by ear again. I only used the noise channel sparingly (for certain sound effects).

Not much to say about this track beyond that, but hopefully some of y'all will start making more chiptunes based on "Love Conquers All" because I'm still disappointed in you.

It really seems like I keep doing tracks based off of princesses, doesn't it? Well, one of the things I wanted to try doing today was a full song instead of a track that's made to loop for about a minute and a half, and I figured I'd use this as an excuse to cover "You'll Play Your Part" for a change. One of the things that made this interesting was that the tempo changes a bit, especially near the end (where Celestia and the other princesses sing to Twilight), so instead of changing the speed I tried changing the tempo, meaning I had to use a decimal to hex converter to make sure Famitracker got the right tempo.

Also on a side note, this song is the second biggest example of tempting fate I've ever seen. Just saying.

So I saw the final trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and I immediately decided, after I got home, to do a famitracker rendition of Quiet's Theme (also used in Sins of the Father). It's a beautiful way for Kojima to declare the end of Metal Gear Solid as a series by showing how far Snake as a character has come over the years, and although I don't think this track will ever live up to the majesty of the original I hope I did a pretty good job.

First impressions: I'm surprised that it's somewhat easy to use. Granted, it's no Famitracker in terms of familiarity, and until I can figure out which is what and what is which I may stick with Famitracker for a little while. However, once I figured out instruments and patterns I got to work pretty quickly. This is the result. Hope you like it!

Here's the thing: I haven't gotten a chance to listen to the full song of Rules of Rarity at its best. I'm sure it's a good song from the MIDI I've heard of it. But the problem I've had so far is that most of my remixes involve either Rainbow Dash or the four Princesses. The rest of the Mane 6 have not had their chance to shine yet on Famitracker/Defletracker Bits. I figured since Rules of Rarity was still relevant I'd do a Defletracker Bits remix of that. Good news: I've figured out what was going on with "I'll Fly" in Defletracker, and I'll get to fixing that after posting this.

When remixing this, I noticed that it ended up sounding like a town music from Pokemon GSC, and I liked that and stuck with it. Expect a gracious amount of high-pitched bell noises here as a result. About the episode itself: the biggest takeaways are, well, the big pony and what I consider the dumbest face I've seen on the show to date. I mean, seriously, LOOK AT IT!

What was I saying? Oh, yeah. So a while ago, roughly 5 months ago, I started doing a series of GBC-Style remixes for various songs and BGM in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, starting with I'll Fly, and continuing to this day. The only caveat was, they were all in Famitracker. Recently, I downloaded a program called DefleTracker, and messed around with it (the result can be found here: Trojanhorse-3 – Defletracker-bits-glimmer-glacier-anton-coolpecker-game-boy-color). To my surprise, it was much easier to run than I expected (although a little finicky at first). Then I decided to port the entirety of I'll Fly from my pony GBC file to Defletracker as best as I could (there are a few noticeable errors here and there). If you like this, let me know, and I'll see if I can start porting others. (Or not, I'll just do it anyway...)

So when I originally finished the port of Glimmer Glacier, I wanted to try and port Tranquil Treeline from Famitracker to Defletracker for that authentic GBC flair. But as I started, I encountered a problem: for some reason, the drumset I was using had a swing to it. (Dahh-da dahh-da dahh-da), making a 1:1 port impossible. It's not a problem, though, just gotta keep my songs at 128 rows per frame whenever possible from now on. Still gettin' used to Defletracker, bluhhh...

I've wanted to do this song for a while now in Famitracker, but I haven't had the patience or motivation to get it done with the usual method (read off of the videos of the MIDI). When I started using Defletracker, I decided I wanted to at least attempt this again. Special shoutout to DJDelta0 for letting me use the MIDI file to form a basis for this cover, by the way!

For starters, it's a lower pitch than most covers aside from EileMonty's cover of it from ages ago. What I did was port the MIDI to Defletracker at its normal pitch, then transpose it four steps down, then adjust as I needed. I also added in the ending vocals from Feather's cover because I wanted to see if it would work. Sure enough, it fit. I actually have a version of the song at its normal pitch, but I won't be uploading that right now because of the previously-mentioned issues with Soundcloud. Sorry about that!
