A year after their groundbreaking sophomore album Nick & Astro’s Guide to the Galaxy LP, Potatohead People are back with a collection of instrumentals, remixes and B-sides. They’ve tapped some of their favourite producers from around the globe for remix duties, and spiced things up a bit by holding a remix contest from which one winner was picked from an overwhelming number of submissions - needless to say it was not an easy decision!

Opening up the release is a brand new original from Potatohead People - “Iced Tea,” which features vocals and a guest verse from Vancouver’s giorgi and Radina Vee - a perfect smooth jam to ease into Summer. Up & coming Australian producer TEYMORI (aka Amin Payne) puts a mid-tempo house flip to “No Sleep Til MTL,” but kept all the soul. Next up, the boys give us a taste of an early demo take of “Liftin’ Up” that features an extended instrumental outro, giving a completely different vibe from the album cut. From 100+ entries, Nick and Astro chose Russian producer Infinite Blaq’s remix of “Quest For Love,” which sped things up a bit and added a funky, meandering synth bass line, horns, and sax to the catchy vocal line. Following this, Kerem Akdag brings a classic West London broken beat touch to “Do My Thing.” The Istanbul-based producer has a self-titled out on the UK label Dimensions and has received praise from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Osunlade and Detroit Swindle. DJ Spinna’s groovy Galactic Funk Remix of “Morning Sun” joins the remix collection after the success of the 7” released in February, while Oakland’s 10.4 ROG brings a dreamy wonkiness to “All Alone.” Closing out the remixes is Brooklyn’s Sam O.B. (fka Obey City) - known for heading up the AstroNautico label - with a disco-tinged take on “Quest For Love” featuring additional vocals from the man himself that’s itching to heat up the dance-floor. Sandwiched between all the remixes are the instrumental tracks for “Do My Thing,” “Morning Sun,” “All Alone,” and “Change of Heart.” Finishing up the record is another new Potatohead original, “Nightcap,” which does exactly as advertised, bringing end-of-the-night, smokey jazz club vibes to accompany your drink of choice.

Bastard Jazz is proud to present the new EP from Vancouver's AstroLogical, also known as one half of production duo Potatohead People. With a long list of collaborations outside of the group ranging from Pomo, Phife Dawg, Illa J and DJ Khalil - Astro's new EP "Private World" resides somewhere in between jazz, soul, ambient and future electronic vibes with it's lush keys, chunky breaks, and deep musicality.

Nate Drobner aka. AstroLogical is a multi-instrumentalist producer/composer based in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. 
After releasing a number of solo instrumental hip-hop projects through the net label Jellyfish Recordings in the early 2010’s under the AstroLogical alias, he had began focusing his energy on the producer duo Potatohead People; a collaborative project with his old friend Nick Wisdom, eventually getting noticed signed by Brooklyn-based record label Bastard Jazz in 2012 (with the help of Nightmares On Wax). Their 2018 full-length sophomore album ‘Nick & Astro’s Guide To The Galaxy’ was released to great acclaim and led them to be invited to Jazzy Jeff’s annual Playlist Retreat alongside such luminaries as Lord Finnese, Young Guru, and Pharaohe Monch.

While jazz and funk are at the core of @michelemanzo 's musical foundation, the Italian artist deftly draws upon his inspirations in hip-hop, dub, and Brazilian music as both an instrumentalist and producer. But above genres, inimitable grooves are the key driver of his work, and in his grooves one can hear the vibe of a moment being captured and perpetuated for eternity. With this combination of musical depth and raw feeling, it is no surprise Michele has crossed paths with Darker Than Wax, and we feel truly blessed to present his LP ‘ALL RISE’ to the world.

‘ALL RISE’ is a genuine reflection of Manzo’s art form, which sees so many different styles and influences coming together in the most natural, organic way. Everything was recorded live using bass, synth bass, guitar, old analogue keyboards, blended together with modern synths, dub delays and ambient fx - giving off the familiar warmth of boom bap and progressive stimulation of neo-soul. The pervasive harmonies and clever use of chords give the album a real musical depth, but grounded with an effortless, natural approach to creation.

More than just showcasing Michele’s musical prowess and mastery of the instrumental, ‘ALL RISE’ is also a deeply collaborative effort. The chemistry with heavyweight collaborators like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, Nicholas Ryan Gant and RayClev is incredible - they
compliment his instrumental tapestry with poetic ammo, elevating “ALL RISE” to a level of virtuous artistry.

The five vocal cuts also offer a sober reflection on the turbulent social climate of 2019 America, and the world at large. Police violence, racism, and growing divisions that dominate the current zeitgeist are examined front and centre, most prominently by Dudley Perkins on the title track. Yet despite such a worrying state of affairs, there is an underlying message of positivity triumphing, and a rallying call to destroy evil at its root rather than be consumed by it. ‘ALL RISE’ is about people standing up and uniting, being brought together by a common spirit and emotional music.

I've been waiting for this day. Inviting the talented @jraisejr from Italy to releasing a debut EP on the catalog. A member of the great crew Resilienza with two stunning previous releases titled 'Hi My Name Is Vol. III' and 'No Man's Tape' and now we're getting embraced by his latest tape 'Lifted Quest'. I'm so honored in showcasing more people from Italy since that was truly my first encounter with the classic SP-404 overused repeat effects and just broken beats in general. I'd like to give a shoutout to everyone in the beatmaking community there.

To read a bit more about @jraisejr he's an Italian beat maker and crate digger, class 96’. He released his first productions in 2015 together with some local MCs before moving to different countries, Canada and the Netherlands, with the aim of expanding and growing his musical knowledge and network. His first weapon of choice since day one is the MPC2000 XL being also in most cases, the protagonist of his productions with a particular focus on drum programming. Student of the faculty of creative business, he started moving the first steps in the music business at an early age, collaborating with different record labels, both in the Netherlands and Italy as an intern and A&R.

@jraisejr joined the roster of Resilienza Records at the end of 2018, releasing two beat tapes (as mentioned) in 2019 and collecting different appearances in many projects from rappers & producers around the world.
