I saw that Cinnamon Chasers had uploaded the stems from two of his songs to Soundcloud a few weeks ago. I decided to play around with the vocal stem and began writing a song around it. I actually had no idea there was a contest and submissions just ended on Monday. Oh well....

Summer is my favourite time of the year.

This selection explores the tension that exists between the child in me that experienced vast summers that seemed to go on forever, versus the adult of now that realises that as we make our inexorable, annual orbit around the sun – summer, like any other measurement of time, is unbearably transient and oh-so-fleeting.

From the pink showers of falling cherry blossoms that backdrop the first fine days of late April & early May, to the noctilucent skies of midsummer, to the last of the summer carnivals (or, as is now the case: festivals) leaving town for another year, I both savour the moment and instantly yearn for it as it as it dissolves. As you become increasingly conscious of your mortality, the thought occurs – not morbid, merely realistic – that this summer could be your last. You just don’t know. So this is my soundtrack to my last summer on planet earth – to the changing light, the fragrances and sounds of this most romantic of seasons.

Last Summer On Planet Earth

This mix is a sequel to 2014's 'Last Summer On Planet Earth'.

Now relocated to the idyllic version of our sister planet Venus, which is to say the version imagined by writers of 1950s Sci-Fi* .... where the atmosphere is sticky and tropical and where thick vegetation grows in abundance, our gaze often turns to the old world.  A shimmering blue dot in the evening sky, we dream of summers on planet Earth, of sunny mornings soundtracked by birdsong and evenings filled with the chirping of crickets and other nocturnal music-makers.   
Someday we will return home, but for now all we can do is listen to our memories.
So the old song goes: 'Thugamar féin an Samhradh linn' (we brought the summer with us).

* Please note that the Venus of this mix is not the actual uninhabitable planet we now know of with its runaway greenhouse effect and thick sulfuric acid clouds.  Interestingly, on Venus, its seasons are shorter than its days.  Seasons last approximately 55-58 Earth days, while each Venusian sunrise is separated by 117 Earth days. 
Venus also rotates backwards, causing the sun to rise in the west and set in the east.  Watch the skies, keep looking . . .
