Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 56:  Fuck Off, I'm Gaming

Well hello hello there good people!  Welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk!  It's been about three weeks real time since the boys have had a chance to sit down together and there's much to catch up on.  Colin has been away on his honeymoon for the last 10 days so the boys take some time at the top to catch up on Canadian exchange rates, the intricacies of the French language, and recap on the wedding.  After that Darryl prompts us each with a unique scenario in a zombie apocalypse and how we would handle it.  Our responses are pretty different indeed.  For Patreon questions we delve into topics such as when the right time to introduce your kids to gaming is, and if we think difficulty related trophies should exist? Spoiler, yes they should.  Finally, as is tradition in the first episode of every month, the gang each brings a trophy list to discuss and review.  Colin begins with Super Perils of Baking, the newest game from Lillymo Games.  Eli finds a pretty interesting blend of zombie survival and Minecraft to talk about with Deadcraft, and Darryl throws praise at another Rebellion list in Sniper Elite 5. Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 80:  The Return of the Pat

Hello there everybody!  Welcome back to another episode of trophy hunting discussion, and gaming goodness. In this one, the boys are reunited and ready to discuss some of the biggest gaming releases of the year.  That's right, not only is it Spooktober but the month we've long discussed where some of our favorite franchise release their newest iterations, in hopes of capturing our imaginations and trophy hunting attention.  We're please to say that all three games we look at in this episode have solid lists, that pay homage to not only other games in their respective franchises, but to their inspirations as well.  

The first bit of the show sees us discussing some platinum shout outs from the Discord community, and hearing tales of Slugger's recent travels.  From there we spend a little time going over some top 25 lists, and what moments from games have truly scared us.  

The second hour and some change is all about the aforementioned trophy lists.  So sit back, relax and enjoy some discussion about AC Mirage, Lies of P, and Spiderman 2's trophy lists. This first episode centers around the most recent title from the Assassin's Creed universe, AC: Mirage. Joining Colin on this episode is a long time community member, supporter, and friend of the show, Gary aka TheSlyGCooper. In this episode we do of course get into spoilers and a deep discussion of 9th century Baghdad, the combat, the visuals, and gameplay mechanics, and of course the story. However, the first 30 minutes or so we take our time talking about our history with the AC universe and the previous games in the franchise. Trophy Talk Podcast: DLC Pack 1 - AC: Mirage Discussion and Review ft. TheSlyGCooper

Hello there everybody! 

Welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk.  This is the final episode for 2023, and what a year it has been!  This time around the crew is back to talk about what games we've been playing over the past month or so.  Just like the earlier parts of the year, the last few months have seen so many great releases that it's been tough to keep up.  So just what have the guys been up to recently in the realm of PlayStation?  Well it turns out that there's quite a bit of overlap between them.  Slugger, Darryl, and Colin both give there thoughts on trophy hunting in Spiderman 2, and in God of War: Ragnarok's free DLC, Valhalla.  On top of that Slugger has been playing Marvel's Midnight Suns, Tchia, and a few others.  Darryl has finally gone back and platinumed God of War: Ragnarok, and Colin digs deep into his backlog to discover the gem that is Shadow of the Colossus.  

In addition to all of that we have some platinum shout outs, pulled from our great community over on Discord.  We have some interesting Patreon submitted questions which cause us to try and asses the strength of various streaming services we subscribe to, and we also finally tease the new Discord trophy hunting game, which will be launching on February 1st.

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 101: One More Run

Hello hello there everyone! 

Welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk!  In this episode we're doing something slightly different.  Normally the crew pre-records one episode a year so that we can release it around the holidays in December, and take a few weeks off from work and the show.  However, this year, we didn't do that.  As a result we thought we'd try to take a small break here in the beginning of the year.  It didn't feel fair to only put out a spoiler cast though, as some of you reading this / listening maybe haven't played FF16, or have no interest in it.   So, what we decided to do was record a normal show all the way up through answering Patreon submitted questions, and then, instead of doing trophy list reviews, we'd stitch on our FF16 spoiler cast.  

Our discussion of FF16 was recorded months ago, as you can tell from the speculation about potential DLCs for the game which were later announced at the 2023 Game Awards.  Even still, I think it's one of the best discussions and break downs of the game I've seen.  We sincerely hope that you enjoy it, and a special thank you to Max for lending a hand with this one!

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 102: Controller Mayhem & DLC Pack 2: FF16

Well hello hello there everybody! Welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk! 

This episode sees a return to the normal run of the show, after what has been a fairly hectic week for a few of the hosts.  Slugger fills us in on his most recent escapades to see the Bills play during the play offs, and Colin and Darryl are going through a rather slow period at work.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that it's harder to get in the normal routine and rhythms of life.  That being said, we've got a banger episode for you all, so thanks so much for tuning in and listening. 

For starters we have a few housekeeping items to go over which include the start of the next competition and Discord raffle beginning February 1st, Colin's most recent guest appearance on PS Plus Game Club, and the announcement that Pat and Kevin will be back on as guests on the show in the near future. 

From there we get into our Patreon submitted questions which range from the goofy to the profound.  On the profound side, the boys try to come up with their 5 most proud platinum trophies in their whole collection while also keeping in mind if these are games that we can recommend to the wider trophy hunting audience.  After that we discuss things like our preference with flying first class or for free, what video game character we want to smell like, and what our favorite TV shows and cartoons were growing up.  

As it turns out two of the hosts were Nickelodeon kids while one was firmly in the camp of Cartoon Network... can you guess who? 

Last but not least the guys each bring a trophy list to review and discuss.  Darryl continues to go hard on indie games and brings forth Cub, a fairly new release which he just so happens to have a great deal of love for.  If you couldn't tell from the thumbnail and title, Slugger goes deep into the analysis of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and it's Day 1 DLC for NG+.  Last but not least Colin takes a look at just why the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake lists keeps popping up every so often on PSNP.  Is this game ever going to come out?

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 103: First Class to Kamurocho

What's going on folks, we hope that you are all doing well!  Welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk.  As you can tell from the thumbnail and the title of the episode, Colin has been attempting to work out more.  While his efforts haven't been necessarily successful, they did involve him getting some more time at the gym, and the boys discuss that at the top of the show briefly before getting into some gaming and trophy news and statistics.  As always with our shows, what's in store for you listeners are some great shout outs of content creators in our community, and Platinums earned by our Discord.  On top of that we have some questions surrounding the use cases and desire to play or get into more Mobile Gaming, and VR with the PSVR2.  Are Darryl and Colin ever going to see the light with these pieces of tech and hardware?  Probably not, but the PSVR2 has some great games coming to it, announced at the most recent Sony State of Play.  

After the shout outs and questions, we get into what we've been playing.  Slugger continues to be obsessed with (rightly so) Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Colin and he also touch on their experience CoD: Black Ops 3, and MW3 Zombies.  Colin also has some choice words to say about Returnal, a game that has a great many things to love about it but at the same time is an absolute nightmare for trophy hunting.  Finally, Darryl continues to burn through amazing Indie games and this episode sees him touch on quite a few of those in addition to Yakuza Kiwami, and Dead Space Remake.

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 104: Noodle Arms

The damns have broken!

In what the Trophy Talk crew hopes is the beginning of a new era, Xbox has decided in recent weeks to bring over four select titles to the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch ecosystems.  The first of these titles is Pentiment, a small passion project from Obsidian that focuses on a style and type of game that we don't see regularly these days.  Naturally much of the discussion this week at the top of the show, and in the reviews section focuses on Pentiment.  How did Obsidian do in creating their first trophy list?  Are the pricing, the artwork, and the naming conventions up to snuff?  Turns out that for the most part, they are! 

Slugger also brings a new release to talk about this week in Pacific Drive.  A smaller title from a group of developers who previously worked on things like League of Legends, and Halo 4, Pacific Drive is a game that merges rogue like elements (the hottest genre in gaming right now it seems), with pieces of an open world racing / car game.  The results are a game and trophy list that appear to be well worth considering.  The question is if anyone will have time for this type of game in between some of the biggest releases of 2024.

We start off by tackling the recent discussion around Spiderman 2's NG+ trophy and the debug menu that was mistakenly left in the game post patch by Insomniac.  Is it cheating to get a NG+ trophy in this way?  What even is the point of these NG+ trophies that seem to be the standard from Sony?  From there we once again talk distribution and the seeming lack of effort from many developers to even utilize anything other than Bronze trophies in their lists.  After that we get into your Patreon submitted questions which touch on our jobs and any struggles with addiction.  We close out the episode with what we've been playing, as well as a segment that analyzes a full year of using PS Plus Premium?  Is the highest tier service on PS+ worth your time and money? Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 106: Grapes of Wrath ft. Kevin Garaventa

Hey there trophy hunters! 

Welcome back to another episode of TTP!  Every once in a while one of those games comes along that seems to be in the zeitgeist in our community.  One of those games where many people appear to be playing it, and going back to it for trophies at the same time.  We've had this before with things like Battlefield 1, Rogue Company, and most notably Fall Guys.  This time though, that game is Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch's 2020 Samurai open world adventure game and its attached "Legends" game mode.  At the same time, one of the biggest releases of the month comes to us in the form of Rise of the Ronin, developed by Team NINJA.  The funny thing is, not only do these games share a similar aesthetic due to their setting and subject matter, but the trophy lists for these games appear to follow very similar structures.  Is this due to the general philosophy behind designing open world games? Or is it due more to Sony's influence acting as publisher for Rise of the Ronin this go around?  

In addition to Rise of the Ronin the team also looks at a gorgeous and seemingly great indie game trophy list with Planet of Lana, a game that came to Xbox and Game Pass last year but is finally migrating over to PlayStation in April.  Last but not least we examine and review Alone in the Dark's trophy list.  The long dormant survival horror series developed by Pieces Interactive is back, and while the reviews are varied and run the full spectrum of opinions, perhaps the most cardinal sin the game commits is that upon launch it's platinum trophy is unobtainable.

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 107: Rise of Tsushima

Hello everyone and thanks for tuning in to another episode of Trophy Talk!  The crew has assembled in Episode 108 to talk all about what we've been playing and trophy hunting in for the past month or so.  Before we get there though the top of the show opens with an interesting discussion on what constitutes a spoiler.  Does the definition change depending on the cultural pervasiveness of the IP?  Does it change based on the medium of the story?  Is it fair to deem mechanics as spoilers? We discuss it all.  Additionally, Josh brings Colin and Darryl up to speed on a recent legal case involving a YouTuber, Ubisoft, and the closure of The Crew's servers.  

As far as what we've been playing Josh takes us to medieval France in A Plague Tale: Requiem, and sings the praise of Jon Bernthal in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.  Darryl links up with the rebel resistance movement in Star Wars: Squadrons and hunts collectibles in Tchia.  Colin nears the end of his long grind with Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Mode, and Call of Duty: MW3.  

The biggest question though, is should you boost with strangers, or with friends?

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 108: Don't Boost With Friends

Hello there everyone!  Welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk.  This week it's just Josh and Colin on the show and Darryl was taking some much needed R&R after a busy week.  Don't worry though, there's still much to discuss and banter about for you folks.  As this episode is a list review episode Josh and Colin pulled together what we believe are two of the coolest PSN releases of the year in Harold Halibut, and Dave the Diver.  Dave the Diver had previously been released on other platforms but is finally seeing it's debut on the PSN, and to great success.  Indeed as I (Colin) write this it appears that roughly half of my friends list on PlayStation has become obsessed with the game.  I predict tales of fishing, and Sushi coming very soon for us all.  The other title, Harold Halibut, is a smaller title from Slow Bros.  Slow Bros is a German company that caught my eye because they employ not only the traditional swath of jobs associated with game development, but also things like a carpenter, and textile worker.  Why you might ask?  Well, it's because Harold Halibut is truly a Claymation style , stop motion adventure game.  Set on an alien planet and boasting some truly strange and wonderful ideas, Harold Halibut is one to look out for.

In addition to those list discussions Josh and Colin dive into a couple of Patreon submitted questions on topics of how we deal with the backlog / missed games from Sony's earlier generations, and how we tend to approach which version of a game to play when we get both a PS4 and PS5 version upon purchase.  Both of these are topics that have been brought up in our community a fair number of times and it was nice to weigh in on these with our own personal takes.

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 109: Bierzone

Hey there listeners! 

Welcome to the inaugural episode of Surviving the Horror (StH).  This is a show that Josh and I (Colin) have been toying around with for a while in the background and we're excited to finally be able to launch it.  The idea here is that once a month we will sit down to playthrough and discuss a survival horror game.  The game can be from any console / ecosystem, it can be old or new, good or bad, it really doesn't matter as long as it's survival horror.  After we play through it we'll sit down and discuss the story , the characters, the gameplay systems, soundtrack etc. and try to come to a determination of whether or not the game is truly a survival horror game.  

For our first episode we're diving back in time to 2010 and the Xbox 360 release of Deadly Premonition.  Developed by Access Games and directed by Hidetaka "Swery" Suihiro, Deadly Premonition has long gained attention for it's strange setting and characters, tonal shifts, and at times completely bonkers design decisions.  However, among survival horror fans the game has also garnered a cult like following of sorts and is often cited as one of the most interesting horror games one can play.  After spending 20 hours or so with the game, I think we can confidently say that this one is worth a look.  We hope you enjoy the discussion and thank you for listening.

Surviving the Horror - Episode 1: Deadly Premonition

Hey there gamers.

It's that time again, time that we welcome back Patthetrophyhunter for his 3rd visit to the Trophy Talk Podcast.  Pat has been one of our longest standing community members and it's always great to hear from him about his trophy hunting journeys and adventures up in Canada.  In particular this episode we have some great discussions about the PS Portal, about how we deal with new gaming habits once kids are in the mix, and what games Pat plans on using the infamous racing wheel for in the future.  Speaking of kids, Josh has had his third child very recently so congratulations are in order!  Some of our listener questions this week focus on this news and the balance / juggling act of trying to play appropriate games when kids are running all over the house.  

In addition to those topics we cover things like Metal music, the rage gods, the rise of Cthulhu, and what franchise or game series we want to hop in to but feel intimidated by.  That's not all we discuss though of course as this is a what we've been playing episode after all.  In honor of Star Wars day (we recorded this episode on May 4th) , Colin discusses Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered in all its boomer shooter glory before taking a trip to Runeterra and the Freljord to talk about Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story.  Both of these games are fun, short experiences that you can platinum in a weekend with little to no guide needed.  What's not to like?  Josh has been playing lots of course but highlights his time spent with Remedy's Alan Wake II, and just how intriguing of a survival horror experience the game is.  Last but not least, Pat talks about Rollerdrome and his trials and tribulations chasing the 100% on GTA V.  With over 350 hours in the game so far and likely another 50 to go, the game is a behemoth to 100%.  Who better equipped for the task than Pat?

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 110: Praise Cthulhu

Hello there everyone,

Welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk!  In this week's episode, we actually start off with something a little different.  In general we try to stay away from gaming news conversations on the show.  It's not because we don't have things to say on the big topics of the day but it's more in an effort to let the podcasts that handle these things do so.  We're not a news show and never have been so at times it feels like why would anyone want to hear from us on these things?  This time though we had the time and space in the show to allow for a larger conversation about what has been going on over recent months with Xbox, and our thoughts on the future of Game Pass, the Xbox brand, and so much more.  

After a healthy discussion on the news surrounding recent studio closures, financial data, and console sales, the boys then go on a major tangent and discuss pizza.  What toppings, sauces, styles do we think  make for the perfect slice?  You can't go wrong of course, but can you go right?  Is there truly a best way to enjoy pizza?  

Lastly Colin , Darryl, and Josh each bring a trophy list to review, and oddly enough all of the lists this week have great distributions, and great concepts for their design.  Take that Remedy and Alan Wake 2! You can keep all your bronzes =) 

Colin breaks down what appears to be a fairly straightforward and forgiving list for an online free to play FPS in XDefiant.  
Darryl gets into some Kaiju hunting and walking sim vibes with his exploration of Titan Chaser, and Josh takes us back to survival horror roots on the PS1 with Crow Country. Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 111: Reverse Uno Card

Hello and welcome everyone to episode 2 of Surviving the Horror!  In this episode Colin and Josh take a look at the Xbox 360 era launch title Condemned: Criminal Origins.  Developed by Monolith Productions, and published by SEGA, Condemned released as a launch title on Xbox 360 in November of 2005.  The game has some great atmosphere, sound design, and overall atmosphere while mixing in some visceral first person melee combat and exploration.  In many ways Condemned was ahead of its time, and it holds up beautifully to this day.  We hope that you enjoy, and thank you so much for listening!

Surviving the Horror - Episode 2: Condemned: Criminal Origins

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another exciting episode of Trophy Talk! 

In episode 112, we see Josh and Colin get together to discuss the plethora of games they have been playing across the month of May.  Some of these titles are smaller, and more recently discussed, such as Titan Chaser, while others are a bit more of surprising deep cut.  Overall though, as you can guess, the boys have been quite busy! 

Before getting into all those games though, the team takes some time at the top of the episode to go over all the recent game announcements from the Sony State of Play.  As you no doubt guessed from the thumbnail and the title, we were all thrilled at the announcement of Astro Bot, and luckily we don't have long to wait until we play it! What about the other titles though?  Did anything else jump out to us from the swathe of new titles?  Well, yes and no.  

Lastly, Josh and Colin field some Patreon submitted questions, shout of some platinum trophies earned by community members, and invoke Cthulhu / the rage god once again.

Trophy Talk Podcast - Episode 112: Astro Bot to the Rescue

Well well well, look at what we have here.  After the boys were a bit hard on Xbox for some of their most recent business moves and studio closures, Xbox came back and delivered what has to be one of the best showcases in recent history.  With the showcase came a litany of great game announcements and trailers, many of which are coming to PS5.  Naturally we start off the show by discussing some of these titles that are coming over, and what the showcase means for our feelings and thoughts on Xbox as a whole.  Truth be told, it certainly made us more inclined to check out the Xbox ecosystem in the recent weeks as we wait for more PS titles to come out later this Summer.  

From there Josh and Colin move on to discuss a topic submitted via Patreon.  Just what is the "correct" way to play a video game?  Are we as trophy hunters robbing ourselves of intended experiences by using video and text guides?  The short answer is, it depends, but we get into much more detail and try to parse out the truth which lies somewhere in the middle.  

Finally Josh reviews a PS classic title that recently got trophies added to it in Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, and Colin talk about the shadow drop of a DLC Pack 2 for Astro's Playroom.  Is this a brilliant way to market the upcoming Astro Bot title and drive excitement, or is a huge annoyance to the trophy hunting community and those who strive for the full 100%? Hello all and welcome to the first episode of Coffee Kids.  My name is Colin Kolhoven and my hope with this podcast series is to be able to provide a little insight, nostalgia, and entertainment on a wide array of (mostly nerdy ) topics. In this episode we provide an overview and our thoughts on the returning Days of Play sale currently ongoing on the PS Store, discuss even more glitched trophy lists (Mafia II Definitive Edition), and complain about YouTube demonetization.  After all that juicy goodness we get into our current Trophy hunts and what we've been playing.  Standout games from our recent weeks include, The Deadly Tower of Monsters, Outlast 1 + 2, and Nier Automata.  The gang is continuing to make our way through Strange Brigade, a game we all seem to be enjoying more as time goes on.
