My next guest needs no introduction, with more than 3 decades of presence on the music scene, he is well known to everyone in the music world. I am happy to announce that he is returning to this year's La Casella Festival, (He says because he is a huge fan), and since I am his, am honored to present you an extraordinary one-hour and a half long selection by DJ Rocca.

La Casella Sunset Lovers #2 with DJ Rocca

Few months ago, we came across Souldade’s SoundCloud channel (@simon-de-forni)and we got caught up by a super nice edit of “Penelope” by Rodrigue. 

As our next vinyl release got delayed because of the lockdown in France, we decided together to publish one of his newest edits on our channel to promote his selector and editing skills. Two weeks ago, he sent us this excellent “Ain’t Like Reggae” edit that we are now sharing with you. We took the opportunity to ask him few questions about his background and this edit.

MTT: Hello Souldade, how are you? What are you up to these days?

Souldade: Hello MTT! I’m doing pretty good in my native South of France; nothing left to do but exercising outdoor, spending hours digging through the web (and incidentally doing some remote work)!
I think the upside of this quarantine is that DJs and selectors around the world get much more time to focus on their musical activities, and so do I. I regularly visit my peers’ great YouTube channels or SoundCloud profiles to give a listen to their latest mixes or uploads; I browse many other YT channels or Discogs pages to find new stuff to play (or edit); I even watch documentaries about the story of the genres I love – by the way I recommend the “Paris c’est l’Afrique” old docu series, recently uploaded on Pan African Music YT channel!
In brief, many projects come to my mind right now, hopefully I have time to start materializing them, and I look forward to going further when I’m back in Paris!

MTT: Can you tell us how you became a record collector? When did you start DJing?

Souldade: Vidal Benjamin explains it better than I do in an interview he gave to Record Magazine: “I discovered that all those house music tracks (…) were made out of disco samples. I thought isn’t it more interesting to discover the music of the origins, the disco (…)?” Besides house, I would only listen to American hip-hop as a young basketball player, and I started opening to black music when I discovered that many rap instrumentals would sample older soul, jazz or funk tracks.
So very naturally I joined the French “Chineurs des Origines” (CDO) in 2016, one of La Chinerie’s Facebook groups where members share overlooked tracks with the community. I eventually became admin, and my friendship with the whole team was born back then: Julien, to whom I’m particularly thankful for introducing me as an admin, Rémi, Norman and Simon, who are doing a truly outstanding work with their collective Bayetë, Baptiste, Jeanne, Elise and Hugo.
Both CDO and Make It Deep, which I also had the chance to join for a while, took selecting and DJing to another level for me. After putting all my musical activities aside as I started as a strategy consultant and saw my free time shrink, the passion eventually became to strong and I decided to breathe new life into my hobby, by launching my YouTube channel and upgrading my SoundCloud page, as an attempt to pass on to people the same emotions I can feel when I hear or dance to a track for the first time.

MTT: How did you come releasing edits ? Where do you find the material and what’s your creative process ?

Souldade - Ain't Like Reggae (Edit)

For this second opus, we are hosting @plasticbamboo a chill edit of a french rare record.
Plastic Bamboo is not really a stranger to us, we’ve already invited him to record a podcast on our channel and we also played together last year with Guillaume des Bois from Macadam Mambo.


MTT: Hello Camille, how are you? I hope that you are holding on in Paris, few days to go.

PB: Hi MTT! I'm doing great thank you. There's worse than staying home for long periods of time. I'm kind of used to it anyway because I work in the film industry. These days it's just different because it's necessary. I mostly occupy my time watching movies, listening to music and working on some ongoing projects. I have a first EP of edits coming out on wax next year on a new label from Manchester. My friend Patrick Ryder from Piccadilly Records and Talking Drums is behind it but hush hush. I've also been working on my own label project for a year and a half now. All I can say for now is that the first release is an LP, and that it should be out sometime in 2020.


MTT: I know that you’ve been part of Les Yeux Orange, can you tell us how you get involved in the collective and what benefit you took from this ?

PB: I first met Antoine aka LeonxLeon back in 2014. We both had tracks released through Manchester label Red Laser and instantly got on. He then introduced me to his friends Raphael and Stanislas from Les Yeux Orange and I joined the collective shortly after. At that time I was mostly producing music as Alan Dente (my italo alias), and I didn't know much about digging, the club culture and managing a label. From 2014 to 2017, I learned a lot in those fields while having a great time with my friends. Digging old records became kind of obsessive so I decided to follow my own path as Plastic Bamboo. I haven't given up production but it takes time and dedication.

MTT: You’ve started publishing edits last year, what led you to this ? What’s your objective behind it ?


I first became aware of disco edits through Eric Duncan (COMBI Edits), DJ Harvey (Black Cock Edits) and Theo Parrish (Ugly Edits). That was back in the late noughties when my friend Patrick Ryder used to rave about them. Inspired by them, I naturally started editing tracks just for fun, and hoping to get noticed. Most of them are now lost somewhere in the black hole of my computer. Years later, Plastic Bamboo started with a youtube channel and a series of podcasts on soundcloud, but after a while I decided to pick up where I'd left off with edits. Editing tracks is a way for me to make the most of records that would otherwise gather dust at the back of my collection, and to share them with friends and through social medias.

For this last edit, we welcome DJ Duckcomb (@Djduckcomb) from L.A.

We’ve been following him for a long time, often playing his edits in our podcasts and DJ sets and it was a big deal to us to finally collaborate with him !

MTT: Hello DJ Duckcomb, how are you? What are you up to these days?

DJ Duckcomb: Hello Mister T! Lately I’ve been working a few mixes for Aquarium Drunkard, Pleasure of Love, Purple Noon and Balaeric Banana. The Aquarium Drunkard one went up last week and it’s mostly AOR inspired by these rather dark times we are living in. The others will be on a balearic tip but the Pleasure of Love mix will be more disco vibes typical of what I spin live. 

I have some exciting releases coming up on Emotional Rescue in the summer of licensed reggae disco jams including extended edits of mine alongside the original mixes. First up is local LA/Jamaica native Haile Maskel’s project 101 Band which put out a wicked 7” and 12” in 1983 called “Crazy Kind of Feeling”. I got the master reels from Haile and got them baked and transferred and we unearthed unreleased dub versions which was exciting. I’m very happy with the mix I did incorporating dub elements and making it a nice long track that feels natural and is true to the brilliant original. 

Also in the works of course is a release with Mister T which will dip into my lifelong passion for obscure italo disco. It will feature a very cool slowburn New Beat jam that i’ve been sitting on for ages and will dip into the waters of later 80s italo where the line between proto-house and HI-NRG cheese is blurry but when you edit out the offensive bits you have some something special for the dancefloor.

MTT: I know that you currently work as an audio engineer. Can you tell us a bit more of your background and how you came up with this DJ Duckcomb project ? 

DJ Duckcomb: Well DJ Duckcomb is my DJ name for at least 15 years now. I chose it as a joke because I had this comb shaped like a duck, I still have it actually! It stuck, and of course, it’s unique, i haven’t had any competition for this dj name! I began DJing in the late 90s in Florida, starting with s soul night and a brit-pop night which was big at the time. I moved to NYC in 2000 and started DJing more post-punk and no-wave sounds and eventually got huge into disco and started going to the Loft and becoming part of the scene there. I began DJing with Steve Shakewell as Sharegroove and we had residencies in Brooklyn for over 13 years.

Balearic edit alert by Sir @tropical-tempo-records from his Mediterranean island.
TP first heard La Union - Maracaibo at a club called “Shoom” during the second Summer of Love, and really had a crush on its Balearic vibe. With its house pianos and beat it always got people dancing. The remix made it quite different from the bands other stuff, but again there were a few bits he didn't like, including a flute sound that he found bothering, so one Sunday afternoon 26 years after he first heard this tune he did a bit of reminiscing and edited it.
