Filipina Belgian-based Producer & DJ UNOS presents the second installment of ‘TROPICAL DISKORAL’ compilation, a project featuring electronic artists based in the Philippines.

The project investigates the sound of electronic music coming from the Philippines and its wide diaspora, gathering electronic artists who are showcasing new sounds from the archipelago to the rest of the world.

Initiated by UNOS, Obese.Dogma777 fka Similarobjects, and Tropical Futures, the core aim of TROPICAL DISKORAL is to celebrate and encourage Philippine artists to create music on their own terms. This edition’s featured artists are gender-bending musicians BABYBLUE, introspective and explorative music producer LM900 and dance music producer Jp Hill.

On this edition of the project, UNOS said:
“The unpredictability of the current time made this edition presented later than what we anticipated, but it still matters to release this volume as that of 2021, not 2022.

The two years in the pandemic have been a nightmare for the music scene globally. The pre-scheduled shows have been postponed endlessly. Many artists weren't able to have any live performances at all. But finally, restrictions are loosening up and events are starting to take place. I could feel there is more sense of optimism and warmth coming through and that is also represented in the music that the artists of this edition present."

Filipina Belgian-based Producer/DJ UNOS presents ‘TROPICAL DISKORAL’ project, a compilation of tracks from electronic artists based in the Philippines to celebrate Filipino Independence Day.

The project comprises electronic artists who are showcasing new sounds from the archipelago, around the world. It sonically investigates new electronic music coming from the Philippines and its wider diaspora.

The compilation came together after Unos reached out to the well known artist similarobjects who helped her give life to her project and Tropical Futures institute who gave a platform to it. The aim is to celebrate Filipino artists and encourage them to create music on their own terms whilst also being proud of their Heritage.

On the project, Unos said: “As I have been working for the past few years on my musical growth, I’ve realized I wanted to learn more about my cultural roots. While discovering about the Filipino electronic music scene, I understood the lack of its representation in Belgium and worldwide. That’s when I came across the idea to promote electronic artists who are based in the Philippines, allowing their music to be heard on a global platform.”

From Europe to the Philippines, ‘TROPICAL DISKORAL’ features artists such as , @lustbass, @pamcy, @paolamau, @tarsiusmanila, Ube Jam, @bpvalenzuela and @similarobjects himself. Each artist brings their own flavor to the project with their unique sounds and dance-worthy beats.

This compilation comes at a time of paradoxes in the music scene in the Philippines. While creative voices are somewhat stifled in the current political situation there is a growing community and trend reflecting the rise of electronic scenes around Southeast Asia. This network of sounds from the Filipino diaspora unifies musical characteristics that also reflect a global transnational identity.

The aim of the project is to inspire other Asian and ASEAN countries to produce their own compilations. With that in mind, the project would also like to increase the electronic music coverage of Asian scenes whilst emphasizing the lack of representation on some of the larger electronic media.

The songs of the artists of this year’s compilation are a reflection of these times. The music they have produced is a personal trace that is very relevant to the current global situation.”

With its darker undertone compared to its previous installment, the selected artists on “TROPICAL DISKORAL VOL. 2” transform their cynicism into a musical ray of hope.

Tropical Diskoral Volume 2 (Out on 28th of December)

Tropical Diskoral is an annual compilation featuring Filipino electronic artists from the Diaspora. taking inspiration from the concept of the “Diskoral”, a makeshift outdoor disco celebration practiced in the Philippines.

The project aims to spotlight the emerging contemporary electronic sound from that side of the tropics.

Establishing itself as both a platform for preservation and cultivation,Tropical Diskoral serves as a launching point to connect, re-imagine and celebrate Filipino Heritage from all over the world. Lets chart the new sound of the Philippines together.🌴
