Troubleshoot Mix Episode 009: Mia Lily

The debut release from @jonselbo on his label, Troubleshoot, consists of a three-track EP built for the club. From rave-infused electro to pumping 140 BPM techno, Selbo keeps the dancefloor in mind at all times with TRBLSHT001, set to arrive on May 6th.

The opening track, “Zone Expansion”, sets the tone with its intoxicating chords and devilishly dark acid lines, paying homage to the rave sounds of the late 1980s and early 1990s which have heavily inspired Selbo.

“Inside” showcases Selbo’s affinity for using samples in his productions, with a distorted, chopped-up vocal laid over a driving bassline and heavily processed drums that live slightly further afield from classic drum machine sounds. The track progresses with gated pads and filter tweaks, emphasising the dark, heads-down feel of this club stomper.

The final track, “Freesia”, combines ethereal sounding synths with pounding 909 kicks to create a fast-paced, modern club track with clear trance influences. The track very much reflects the musical flavours Selbo has experienced on dancefloors in recent months and that have pushed him to explore the realms of underground electronic music even further.

For his Troubleshoot mix, XXOK showcases his passion for UK dance music, featuring tracks from the likes of Overmono and Bailey Ibbs which have inspired him greatly. The mix is paired with an interview, in which he shares his earliest musical memory, standout moments from the set, and how coming from South Korea influenced his music taste.

Troubleshoot Mix Episode 010: XXOK

The highly-anticipated second release from Troubleshoot comes from long-time friend of the London-based label, @scaefa, who has been steadily rising through the ranks of the UK electronic music scene for some time. The Reading born and raised artist has had previous releases on heavyweight labels such as La Bonne Musique and Draconian Audio, and radio play on revered stations including BBC Radio 1, certifying him as one to watch for the future.

The four-track EP – set to arrive on September 16th – showcases a unique variation of sounds, from bass-forward breakbeats to pounding melodic trance, Scaefa’s eclectic and wide-ranging music taste is present from beginning to end in Dream Stealer.

The record starts with title track “Dream Stealer”, rolling out big beats, heavy bass, and bouncing leads, paired with layers of lush pads and ambient chords. “Fault Line” is an uptempo, electro influenced track with emotionally charged, pulsating strings running throughout, along with metallic drums, rumbling bassline, syncopated synths and melodies floating in the spaces between to create a truly atmospheric experience. “Mythos” is a groovier, techno track that takes cues from the heavily percussive electronic music which renowned artists like Call Super and Pearson Sound have become known for in recent years.

To close, “Overflow” is a euphoric trance banger with ravey stabs, techy percussive elements and anthemic drops built for big room clubs and festival stages which Scaefa’s releases have become synonymous with.

TRBLSHT002 | Scaefa - Dream Stealer EP

For his Troubleshoot mix, Yuba delivers an hour of what he describes as one of the “most enjoyable sets I’ve ever compiled and recorded”. The hour opens with a special recording of a friend, Samia Lopez, reciting a piece of text from Norwegian writer Karl Ove, before moving into the colder depths of techno. The mix is paired with an interview, in which he shares his earliest musical memory, how Chameleon began, and his favourite gig to date.

After a well-received debut on his label, Selbo puts forward a four-track EP combining a variety of club cuts ranging from snappy breaks to synth-heavy techno. The Cursor EP is a perfect demonstration of Selbo’s breadth of production skills and outlook on how he puts together an EP.

Opening the record, “Pixel Shift” sports a devilish square bass and atmospheric lead lines gelled together with tight breakbeats. Kicking things off with dancefloor euphoria during the breakdown as the main melody bubbles towards the surface.

Shortly after that strong start, “Falling” boasts a hooky vocal, floating pads, colossal stabs and syncopated percussion which help Selbo produce this up-tempo, peak-time club track ready for any dancefloor.

After wrapping up the A side, the title track “Cursor” commences with a cinematic intro that builds towards fast-paced, obnoxious breaks tied with an arpeggiated bassline, both topped with menacing 303 acid.

Closing the EP, Selbo stays in the fast lane with his track “Tubular”. Stripped back raw percussion-filled grooves accompanied with trancey chords and rave stabs set this one up to be a fan favourite. Subtle vocal samples littered throughout the track help to round off the EP with plenty of energy.

The label’s fourth release, “Visions EP” consists of 3 original Nickon Faith tracks with an additional remix by Jon Selbo that continues to amplify the energy. Having made a name for himself as an exciting and innovative producer with a large back catalogue of releases already under his belt, Nickon continues to add to this with three new tracks showcasing his ability to produce expressive and dynamic dance music.

"Visions" kicks off the EP with its ethereal and otherworldly pads, accompanied by wandering lead lines that keep the listener on their toes. A track that's both captivating and emotive, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of the EP.

Next up is "In Bloom", which features infectious percussion and rapid melodies that showcase Nickon’s talent for creating complex, layered soundscapes. The track is underpinned by a strong pulsating bassline that helps push everything forward.
