"Summer of Solstice 3055: 

I’d just returned from a long stint working the orbital docks, preparing to settle back into the life cycle routine that was Valkor Zenith. The last thing I expected was to reconnect with three old friends from my days at the Echo House orphanage. Sora had slipped back from exile on Neoterra Prime. Rion had fled the undercity of Crysalis after a grav-bike race gone bad. And Omrin, who I hadn’t seen or heard of in more than a decade, had shown up out of nowhere as if no time had passed with a stolen data map and a proposition: we’d go find the Dream Beacon.

We’d grown up with the story. A myth, really. Some ancient alien relic buried deep in the sand sea, spoken of in hushed tones in level D bars and back-alley data centres. The promise was simple, if you could reactivate its signal with your own transmission, you’d be granted your most longed-for dreams and unimaginable wealth. No one had ever found it.

I’m still not entirely sure what made us set off and follow Omrin so blindly that summer. Maybe it was grief, maybe hope. Or just that need to move, to do anything but sit still. Each of us were adrift in our own orbit of longing and loss, and somehow, we collided again, drawn together like shards of a broken constellation.

We had left the neon haze of Valkor Zenith behind at sunset, riding the wide stretches of plasma rail to the outer edges as the city lights faded behind us. Nights were lit by twin moons and we passed the time listening to old mixes we’d recorded in our youth, our playlists humming through our comms as we hurtled across other-worldly landscapes at 200mph. In the two months that followed, we would laugh in the ruins of the Oblivion Cradle, party with rogue miners in bioluminescent fungi caverns, feel the cold rush of air as our bikes skimmed the ridges of the Halcyon Scar, be chased by Karn bike gangs through synth-storms, and save a lone settler named Joyce trapped in a dust pocket whilst traversing the Ash Spires. 

As we hurtled towards the promise of the Dream Beacon, I often wondered, was the beacon even real? And if it was, what would I even upload as my transmission? Maybe one of those old mixes we used to make. I’m sure all these questions flickered across all our minds, unspoken. But that summer, deep down, none of it really mattered. I would’ve followed those three anywhere..."

Well, it's winter here in the northern hemisphere and the sun has departed our shores. What little vitamin-D we are able to glean through mile deep clouds permits our bones just enough strength to nod and vibe for roughly 1hr 20mins, before passing out where we land, waiting for the soft dew of spring to wake us from our calcium deficient slumber. This year's hibernation hymnal comes from Isis O'Regan, poet, sound-artist, occasional radio host and recent émigré to Glasgow. When asked to give a brief description of her Forecast she described it thusly:

"Something strange, a weird listening: Éisteacht Aisteach. The soundtrack to riding a waltzer in
slow motion, your stomach twisting mid-air, butterflies knocked down a few Hz."

Our idea of a good time right there.

Forecast 080: Isis O'Regan

A statement mix from the Dutch artist also known as A Made Up Sound, 2562 and ex_libris. 

What makes something sound like Dave Huismans? His music carries a signature you can't quite name, a tension which has defined every chapter of his career. And unlike most producers, he really does operate in phases. 

A man of many monikers, Huismans resurfaced this year after nearly a decade away with two new aliases, ex_libris and In Transit. His latest ventures, though sonically a world away from the work under his most recognised projects, share the same slipperiness, intricacy and disregard for tidy genre borders. 

"Naiveté and a lack of prejudice… a really wide-eyed type of open-mindedness," Huismans once told RBMA, recalling his youthful forays into dance music and that ethos is alive and well on RA.1015.

Huismans's second RA Mix is as equally thrilling as his first one 15 years ago, traversing a map of influences from Madlib and Gyrofield to Prince and Autechre.  There's no shortage of atmosphere (Losoul's "Sunbeams and the Rain" is one particular highlight), but the throughline is groove: soulful, vocal deep house into driving techy depths, walls of glitchy drums and frantic percussion into guitar funk. 

"I got carried away a bit," Huismans says of RA.1015 below. And that's no bad thing. It sounds like someone enjoying himself again, and perhaps, after letting a few old skins fall away, Huismans is ready to shift shape once more. And if it's anything like the last time, a lot of good music awaits.

Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in?

A. First off, I want to thank you for letting me be part of this incredible mix series :‘) what an honor! As a big fan of MDC I wanted to tap into a deeper, more mysterious side of myself while still holding onto the sound that feels like “me”. I tried to let the mix slowly build into that, so you can hear different influences coming through before it settles where it needs to be.

As for the ideal listening environment... I like thinking about how it can live in different contexts. That’s why I love when people surprise me with where they play my mixes. Someone once told me they put one on at an orgy which might be the highest compliment I’ve ever received. So yeah, whatever place you’re in (physical or emotional) if it fits, it fits.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these songs that resonate with you so much?

A. The opening track export city by project runaway from 2020 really captures the kind of rhythm I’m into right now. It’s built around infectious percussion and a sleek, pulsing groove. It kinda mirrors internal restlessness and the desire to move which is what draws me in I guess. 

The closing track No Reason by Vertical Blank from 1993 has these darkwave vocals that feel sad and euphoric at the same time. It’s got this “the end is near but you’re not sure if that’s good or bad“ energy which sounds strange but that ambiguity is exactly why it resonates with me.. if that makes sense? 

Q. I know you’re a big advocate of community focussed DIY parties, what are some events you’ve played over the last year that you’ve felt best embody community spirit, and what do you feel are some of the most important elements required to achieve it?

A. Two of my favorite gigs this year were Earth Dog in NYC and noclubs in Amsterdam. Both were proper DIY raves in secret locations, built entirely from scratch with great sound and music by great people who genuinely care. What made each of them so special was how much they embodied real community spirit: everyone contributing, looking out for each other and creating a space that truly feels owned by the people in it. 

You feel it in how accessible and transparent everything is, in the shared ownership and in the effort to keep things affordable while inviting diverse voices into both the lineup and the organization. Being part of experiences like these makes people feel safe and part of something they get to shape, rather than just attend. And I think that’s a key element. Big up to both crews and anyone out there for keeping that culture alive and staying real and true to themselves!

Today’s Truancy Volume comes from our favourites AKA the boys behind Bicep. We first heard of Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar a few years ago through their very own blog Feel My Bicep, and they have been two of our top selectors ever since. Seeing the London-via-Belfast duo establish themselves as some of the most captivating DJs and producers around has been a joy to witness – the likes of “Silk” (‘11), Satisfy (‘13) and Circles (‘14) still being as popular as ever round Truants’ way. Their recent schedule also speaks volumes about their current thrive and popularity among listeners across the board, comfortably delving between house, techno and disco whilst also having plenty of time for Bollywood soundtracks, atmospheric drum and bass and new age ambient music in their downtime. Following a limited 12” for their XOYO residency and their Just EP on Aus Music, they’ve just released the mighty Dahlia EP in collaboration with fellow producer and long-time friend Hammer. Gerd Janson also recently enlisted them to contribute to his Musik For Autobahns 2 compilation, with their sublime track entitled “Carmine” and you can also look out for a track called "Closing Sequence" forthcoming on 50 Weapons as part of the label's final run of releases. 

Having carved up such a reputation for themselves, it was no wonder Bicep were asked to lead a residency at London’s XOYO over this year's summer period: they just finished their 13-week workout last Saturday, which consisted of a strong curated roster including the likes of Derrick May, The Black Madonna, Palms Trax and Space Dimension Controller. The two have an equally crazy agenda coming up: from their next Feel My Bicep night at Amsterdam Dance Event featuring the likes of Midland, Optimo and Sandrien as well as their next Australia/NZ tour.

The pair has unquestionably been responsible for some of our fondest music-related memories over the years: from sunny afternoons at Dekmantel and ZeeZout, to getting caught by surprise by means of their Dominica edit at other festivals. Their final instalment at XOYO was also one for the books – going from “Just” to Art Crime and Devilfish in proper confetti-canon style fashion. Featuring recent tracks from Mikael Seifu and Dawit Eklund to 2000 era house from Joshua Iz, we’re thrilled to share Bicep’s mix for Truants with you. Equally as uplifting as it is danceable, it is more importantly 100% Bicep vibes. We also spoke to Andy and Matt about their creative processes on both a musical and visual level, what music from beyond the dancefloor they’re currently loving, and their upcoming album.

Roza Terenzi is a producer and DJ from Perth, Australia, now based in Melbourne. After a number of years producing under another name she adopted this moniker to reflect her change in direction and focus. The hands of fate (and the record industry) led to a series of records coming out in quick succession on different labels, with her newest release Mwah recently dropping on Colin Volvert's Kalahari Oyster Cult. A few weeks back we caught up with Roza to speak about her record Weakest Link on Voyage Recordings, the Australian label helmed by Berlin-based Andy Hart. The release, emblematic of her sound, doubled up playful scratches and jaunty synth melodies floating over classic electro sounds and ravey breaks. In an entertaining Gmail-based chat, we also discussed this sudden glut of records, her musical beginnings and inspirations and the meaning of the word “doof”.

Since speaking with her at the beginning of May, she's announced a word-wide tour, jetting off the first week of June for a hefty three months. With dates seeing her land in London for Corsica Studios, Amsterdam for De School and Bambi's in Toronto, there are plenty of opportunities to catch the Melbourne-based DJ. Knowing we wanted to get her in for a mix straight after our interview with her went live, she's managed to get one in time before the summer tour kicks off.  Here's what she had to say on her Truancy Volume:

"The mix today is a loose representation of my DJ sets at the moment, a smash together of genres, which I try to make flow. I like to focus on the elements I love from each of them and how they can interact rather than the style, whilst keeping the dynamics pretty energetic and spontaneous. There are a lot of my personal favourite old gems in here but also a forthcoming track of mine coming out on Salt Mines very soon, as well as new Ambien Baby, Escape Artist and Florist - all incredible artists. I wanted to specifically stray away from my previous structures with mixes, so hopefully this direction keeps it somewhat fresh!"

Wata Igarashi is a force of nature. His impeccably produced records and hypnotic DJ sets straddle a thoroughly menacing and tense atmosphere with that of deeper, more transcendent moments of utter beauty. He is now undoubtedly one of the most gifted and essential voices in modern techno. Evidenced by our most recent run of Truancy Volumes (Batu, Clarke Price & Peter Van Hoesen) all including tracks from Wata in their mixes, his singular yet versatile sound is being rightly appreciated by a diverse group of artists and audiences across the world. From eyes-closed moments on the majestic mountaintop of Rural Festival in his native Japan, to arms-aloft workouts on the dark and hallowed dance floor of No Way Back Detroit, Wata Igarashi deserves your full attention. His newest release, the Kioku EP is Wata's third outing on New York techno institution The Bunker, and is another record from the producer brimming with range and versatility. Sinjin Hawke is a #blessed individual with an ear for binding emotions within hip-hop and R&B. With an extensive output through the waves of his Soundcloud he’s a producer that is versatile to say the least, drawing his inspiration from a range of mixed sounds from mainly R&B, rap and hip-hop to the further likes of trap, garage, dancehall and juke. While eclecticism and quality don’t always go hand in hand, Hawke consistently proves that he can progressively create tracks that marry all categories of sound into a union of richly enjoyable music. To add to his list of achievements, he was also responsible for curating the much revered Boomclap parties in Montreal, alongside Markus of LOL Boys and Azamat B, with whom he also works under the moniker ITFW, responsible for the treasured Ciara edit of “Surgeon” that was featured on our first Truancy compilation.

With his debut imminent in November on the uniformly inspiring Pelican Fly, we have a marvelous package of bootlegs to give away that he’s done in the recent past. His “Bootlegs 2011″ include tracks that we’ve heard before such as the “I’m On One” edit that caught everyone’s attention on Jacques Greene’s recent Allez-Allez mix, but also his unreleased impressive re-work of The-Dream’s “Fancy”, a track that we thought had already reached all possible levels of perfection, but reaches new heights at the hands of his craft. Add a stripped-down and enthralling Beyonce instrumental, two passionate Brandy bootlegs, an effortlessly cool Waka Flocka edit in collaboration with Grand Theft, a impactful footwork edit of Tevin Campbell’s “Shhh” and a collaboration with LOL Boys and you have yourself a recipe for sheer joy. Aside from these unmissable bootlegs to give away, we also spoke to Sinjin Hawke about his musical roots, Montreal, his move to Barcelona and inevitably his upcoming debut.

When rhythm or timbre are the pursuit of much dance music, melody can be swamped, or indeed purposefully neglected in favour of different, more functional elements of music. Grime functions differently in this way, it’s one of the few dance genres that is made with an MC in mind; it wasn’t made to move bodies the weekend long in Berghain. The aching, melancholic melodies of Ruff Sqwad’s 'Anna’ and ‘Functions on the Low’, Rebound X’s ‘Rhythm 'n' Gash’ or Kamikaze's ‘Ghetto Kyote’ bleed into the mind, dwelling in its coldest corners. As Ruff Sqwad's Dirty Danger says, "no one else knew how to put melodies in such dark music." Spooky invades the melody receptors in a similar manner, his method, however, is attrition warfare rather than seductive gloominess. His tracks are assaults on the body, templated meditations on rhythm and melody, on the pure and simple power of repetition and a restrained sonic palette.
