"Man’s search for meaning in the universe; what can be said of it! Having lived for a time disguising myself as one, I am only vaguely qualified to comment. But young adulthood working as a volunteer Field Investigator for the Mutual UFO Network. MUFON is a worldwide non-profit that tracks UFO sightings, looking for a signal in the noise.

Most of the reports left much to be desired – vague reporting that lacked any detail to strike my intuition as proof of life. But there was one person whom I encountered that gave me pause, and still does as I write this now. A humble blue-collar man from the town of Rotterdam, not twenty miles from my own home. I’ve always had a failproof intuition about people & their intentions, and I felt from the moment he opened his mouth that this man was telling the truth about his sighting. He also had actual footage: a pale orange light, slowly gliding across the sky. The light passes behind a church steeple in the foreground, and then appears on the other side, moving on into the horizon. Remember reader, that this was prior to the days of smartphone video and its editability – this was VHS tape! 

In the days that followed talking with him I noted an icy, dreadful feeling growing inside of me. It culminated not long after, when I attended a regression hypnotherapist’s presentation at the New York State MUFON Chapter Annual conference. As the good doctor recanted his portfolio of abductee clients and the strange experiences they reported, I became quite nauseous and my body went into an extreme state of shock. I excused myself from the conference, and later that night, I found myself in a state of nervous breakdown. Was *I* an abductee? Had I been a passenger inside of that pale orange light in the videocassette? I don’t know the answer, but a lifelong obsession about the travails of space travel has followed.

What would it actually be like to be inside of an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Cold and sterile? Cozy and warm? Would you feel inertia, or would you feel stasis? I continue to ruminate on the topic to this day. Here is a DJ mix that explores the matter. Of course, the only important part of a DJ mix is if it has groove, but I hope it also opens up strange new worlds to you!"

Scotia is a DJ & producer from upstate New York. She is co-resident of the Hudson Valley collective Community Rave Network, and has mixed records for platforms like Rinse, The Lot, The Bunker, and Mutant Radio. Her first original track appeared on the “Earthlings 4 Palestine” compilation last year, and she looks forward to a number of compilation releases and a solo EP later this year.

Locking in with a new episode of our Truancy Sessions series with a mix of hi-energy hypnotics from Toronto-based DJ and tastemaker Kuscheln. An all-round purveyor of playful, thought-provoking dance music, he has become a staple figure in the Toronto underground, with his Klub Ferret parties offering nights of steamy dance-offs and queer revelry to a soundtrack of the hottest house and bubbling bass. His mix for us today is party perfection, rolling through with an infectious palette of  late night mind twisters, soaring grooves and big room breaks. As the curveball-loving fans that we are at Truants too, we've completely lost count of the amount of times we've wheeled up the Spice Girls remix in this mix. An unreal statement of flow and taste over 100 glorious minutes.

DJ, producer and singer Elias Mazian is a firm fixture of the club circuit in Amsterdam and beyond and he’s joining us for Tapes #126.

His DJ sets are never predictable, with house music forming a base to deviate from into all manner of unexpected sounds, be it jungle, techno or a classic pop song. The former Trouw and De School resident is refreshingly unafraid to share his sensitive side on the emotional journeys that form his DJ sets, productions and radio shows.

By anyone's standards, KI/KI has had a meteoric rise. She started DJing at queer party SPIELRAUM in Amsterdam in 2018, and by now she's one of Europe's most-talked about DJs. She blends modern strands of techno with trance and acid in a way that feels all her own, veering away from the sugar highs of other DJs or the clobbering kick drums of so much fast dance music. Her style is aerodynamic and sleek, not bludgeoning.

In addition to her DJ career, KI/KI runs the label slash, which has put out music from the likes of Alpha Tracks, Peachlyfe and Newa, artists who share her canny blend of techno and trance aesthetics and sneaky pop sensibilities. Acid is another big love, as shown by her 5HRS OF ACID concept. The decades-old sound has become a key part of her style and appeal, as you'll hear on her RA Podcast. It's a barreling 90 minutes through techno and trance with trap and dubstep accents, breathless but perfectly paced.

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of the Her Records stable. In fact, our only complaint (dictated through greed) is that we don’t hear enough from them. This goes especially so for the Danish component of the crew, the Club Prince, Kid Antoine. The snippets we’ve heard from him, whether on his Soundcloud, Her Records Volume 3 or The Astral Plane’s Heterotopia compilation, piqued serious interest amongst club music fans but further material was tough to come by. This is all about to change. Following an extended US tour by the original members of the label, Kid Antoine’s Proximity EP (HER009) has been announced and we’re delighted to be sharing his entry into the Truancy Volume series by way of accompaniment. These vivid 40 minutes are energetically supercharged and draw on the same UK funky, dembow and ballroom influences as the new release. Some of the EP’s tracks are to be found inside, along with exclusives abound and a very welcome showing of Freeze Tag Booty. We also got to put a few questions to Kid Antoine over email and you can read the enlightening interview below. His driving forces, both in terms of sonic inspiration and geographic location, are particularly fascinating and only increase our curiosity in what’s to come.
