Good episode, but I think it's a mistake to give the impression that this programme was not just evil, but a waste of time - spooks & cops making jobs for themselves by spying on glorified reading groups attended by two men, one woman and their dogs.

There was some of that, but the fact is Liverpool City Council was taken over by Marxists for much of the 80s - the (Trotskyist) Militant Tendency (Brit Socialist Alternative, for the Yanks). They defied Thatcher's austerity with illegal budgets...

& built 1000s of social houses. They were subsequently witch-hunted out of the Labour Party & basically collapsed under the ferocity of the backlash. But they were central in the fall of Thatcher through their role in the defeat of the Poll tax.

Just warranted a mention for context, imo.
