Originally released on the R&S Records sub-label Global Cuts in 1993, ‘20HZ’ by Capricorn became the breakthrough track for its creator Hans Weekhout, a Dutch multi-instrumentalist who started his career recording and mixing for international artists such as Falco and Ian Gillan.

With its memorable combination of those rolling and thunderous marching drums, glacial marimba-like melodies and a tense, trance inducing atmosphere, ‘20HZ’ has become one of dance music’s most enduring tracks. Hitting the singles charts in Holland, Belgium, UK and France on release, and still being played week in and week out across clubs and festivals thirty years later, it’s fair to say that Capricorn’s snare drum driven hit can be classed as a bone fide classic.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of this behemoth anthem, R&S Records have enlisted an eclectic line-up of artists to add their own touches to a suite of remixes. 

Carl Cox helped break this record on its original release, it’s befitting that the global dance icon puts his stamp firmly onto it, jacking up the drums and turning up a big room monster version, ‘oh yes, oh yes’!

Celebrating 20 years of innovative sounds in 2023 is UK live act - SAYTEK. The prolific force in the realms of house and techno continues to deliver stellar sounds year after year, and in the blink of an eye 20 years have passed since his first ever live set. An exciting and colourful path has seen SAYTEK travel the world with his hardware, showcasing his sound in all corners of the globe from Montreal to Mumbai, the legendary terrace of Space Ibiza, London’s Fabric, Berlin’s famous Tresor, Awakenings and Mysteryland in Holland, to more obscure shows such as illegal warehouse parties in Helsinki. Whilst heavily touring he has also found the time to release 9 albums, and over 500 tracks (most recorded live) on heavyweight labels such as Soma, Fabric, TRAX, R&S, Bedrock, KMS, Superfreq and most recently Carl Cox and Christopher Coe’s Awesome Soundwave, and was described by Cox himself as a “genius” at playing live. 

Another sign of this would be his anticipated live stream jams which have racked up tens of millions of views over the years. This success certainly did not happen overnight, tirelessly developing and evolving his sound, starting out with frequent appearances at illegal parties in London, with the first legitimate gig landing at The End’s sister club AKA on a Tuesday night, a far cry from the multi thousand capacity stages you might find synonymous with SAYTEK in recent times. Throughout the years his raw talent has earnt him some serious love from the press including Mixmag and DJ Mag. 

Outside of music real name, Joseph Keevill, has overcome his own personal battles which only adds to the fantastic character he is. For many years he was combating his mental health and addiction, overcoming this and allowing the music to fully take over, and alongside all of this he is proudly neurodivergent.

A successful career in electronic music spanning over multiple decades is no easy feat. Times organically change but SAYTEK’s burning desire and ambition as a live performer has remained the same since the very first day, and long may that continue. An inspiration for old and new with a sincere drive at the heart of everything he does.

andhim are a German DJ and producer duo founded by Simon Haehnel & Tobias Müller. Since their start in 2010, they have published numerous songs and remixes and worked with artists such as Diplo, Rüfüs du Sol and Theophilus London on an internationally successful level.

With residencies in New York, Los Angeles, London and Berlin, they are among the most successful DJ duos in the scene. Over the last decade, andhim have manifested their signature sound without  any boundaries in expressing themselves on a creative level. They have cultivated an exceptionally loyal fan base of musical lovers all over the world. 

In 2020 their documentary film “Miles To Go“ was released. A road trip along the west coast of the US, which dives deep into the lives of the two on tour and how they work with each other. Having their previous singles currently placed on 239 Spotify playlists including Best Techno 2024, Melodic Techno 2024, and Miss Monique Selections 2024, the cryptic dance music duo ÅNDfØLK announce a brand new track ‘Climbing Walls’, out 21 March via Caramel Records. A lesson in lean production and visual storytelling, ÅNDfØLK forges a solid harmonic bond between male vocalist and LFO-enhanced arpeggiator set against the vastness of miragelike soundstage, giving a melodic techno track a unique twist.

‘Climbing Walls’ was set in motion by one of those mundane, passing moments in life that has more to it than meets the eye. “It is the sensation of the moment you get on that airplane,” the duo describes. “You’ve taken off, it’s night-time. You look out the window, and there’s just the lights, the sky, and the fact that you’re going somewhere different.” Leaving out the finer details of the story and the characters amps up the dramatic element of the song. “That could be two people traveling together. Or it could be two people separating.”

‘Fear none, steer towards the sun	Far away from these walls that we’ve been climbing		She said: I’m done with this place. And I’m down to leave no trace behind us.’

While the original concept may sound straightforward, the way to get there was anything but, that much is clear. “This f***ing track is the most frustrating thing we have ever worked on,” ÅNDfØLK goes straight off. “We started this about two years ago and we made 51 different versions, probably even more than that. We’ve done ethereal, we’ve done progressive, and what’s been interesting about it has been that we been on a journey of education within production, and we’ve been applying all our learning to this track.”

The most critical turning point of their journey was the decision to build a harmony around the vocals using an arpeggiator. “We did a lot of work with the LFOs and the melody within the arp, and that’s what gives you the stutter effect across the note changes,” they explain. “What it did was add a melodic and a groove element we were lacking, and because of that bring out more of the vocals. It’s really interesting in a musical sense how sometimes all that it takes is switching one instrument and you get so much more out of every melodic in the track.”

Well-known for perfectionism, ÅNDfØLK’s way of working is labour-intense yet highly productive. “The other versions were very good. They were much smoother and continual as a whole but didn’t give the voice the power. We realised that where we’d gone wrong with the other versions is that the voice should be the protagonist. So, it took us a very long time to get there,” they conclude, laughing.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, Alexander Kowalski’s story is a living testament to the legacy of Berlin techno. His journey began in the late 90s amidst the city’s cultural revolution, ignited by the emergence of techno music. Debuting in 1997 under the moniker DisX3 at the legendary club Tresor in Berlin, he quickly established himself as a driving force in shaping the sounds of the era with fast-paced beats and robust bass lines. 

His impactful live sets also led to releases on the esteemed label of Tresor.Under the guidance of Heiko Laux’s Kanzleramt label, Kowalski pioneered the melodic and sophisticated sound for which he is renowned—a sound that has become synonymous with German techno. His albums 'Echoes', 'Progress', and 'Response', along with tracks like 'Speaker Attack,' 'Belo Horizonte,' and 'All I Got To Know,' have made significant contributions to the history of techno.

Kowalski's music productions and live performances have earned widespread acclaim from both dancefloor enthusiasts and discerning music critics alike. His remixes are highly sought after by icons such as Dave Gahan, Joris Voorn, Paul Kalkbrenner and Funk D´Void. This he balances with a heavy touring schedule, appearing at major festivals including Awakenings, Time Warp, Mayday, Nature One, I Love Techno, Monegros, Aquasella, and many more.

In 2009, he launched his own label, Damage Music, as a platform for his own music and releases from artists he really admires. He has also released music on esteemed platforms such as Be As One, ARTS, Illegal Alien, Tronic, and Arkham Audio. His 'Cycles' LP on Mord stands as a testament to his ability to create timeless music, showcasing the enduring relevance and agility of his productions.

As techno continues to evolve, so too does Kowalski's artistry. He remains at the forefront of modern techno innovation with his principal releases under the name Alexander Kowalski. Additionally, he keeps the analog spirit of 90s techno alive through his DisX3 live and DJ performances, transporting new generations of dancers back to the genre's golden age.

As well as new music, Grum has created a fully live show which he will be taking on the road in 2024. Based on the hardware he used to write the new music, this laptop-free performance will allow him to play and control all aspects of his tracks, and re-arrange and remix them live for a highly immersive sonic experience.

Joining the WCF imprint with his ‘Distorted Time EP’, the Manchester based Transcode brings his driving sound to Egg LDN’s in-house label to showcase his versatile approach to production.

With the vinyl press being released at the beginning of November, followed by the digital version, which includes the bonus track ‘Backlash’, due out on 14th December, the EP includes two remixes by the club’s close friends Secret Cinema and OC & Verde.

Manchester based OC & Verde bring their stamp to the release with their remix of ‘Rotation’. Using a blend of drawn-out synths to build up a powerful lead, packed with raw percussions, it certainly shows the sonic direction the duo has been working on over the last year.

The Swedish has one of the deepest discographies in house and techno, marked by an ear for deep grooves, dynamic arrangements and cleverly utilised vocals. In a career spanning 15 years, those-in-the-know won’t argue: he’s one of the industry’s most dependable and creative talents.

As Tiger Stripes he has travelled every corner of the world playing his techno and gritty tech house.
