This week we leap into the astonishing record collection of Jaye Ward, one that has been amassed across 30+ years within the music scene. The mix is a 3 hour voyage through ambient electronics, chuggy, percussive goodness packed with character, oddities and surprises from the furthest corners of her collection. The core members of Australian dance/electronica/experimental outfit Deepface, Producer/Songwriter Chris Corby, Composer Fran Power and Vocalist Shirley Davis have had what can only be described as a dream start to their musical careers. One EP, one smash hit, airplay around the nation, and of course there is the small matter of an ARIA nomination in their first year in the musical spotlight. The challenge now facing Deepface is to back up their initial success with more high quality, consistent musical releases. Their ARIA nominated debut EP Been Good was a runaway hit, far exceeding the expectations of even the group itself; and on the strength of this they returned to the studio to start intensive work on their debut album. The fruits of all the hard work are finally ripe for the picking with the lead single off the album ready for release. I Want To Live is a slice of pop heaven. Once again featuring the distinctive sultry vocal of Shirley Davis, it is the perfect follow up to Been Good, and the ideal entrée to the full-length album to follow a little later in the year. The Deepface team called in dance guru Andy Page to mix the single and ultimately the album. Andy has been internationally recognised for his production work with such heavy hitters as ARIA award winners Infusion and Melbourne act NuBreed. In the UK he has worked with DJ legend Sasha and is currently working on the new Hybrid record. As a teaser for the album I Want To Live completely sets the mood. Davis' vocal is so distinctive and appealing while the beats immediately establish a great groove. The whole Deepface team take great pride in polishing every note. There is a swell of support growing for Deepface that is almost impossible not to get swept up in. They have the look, they have the sound, they have the talent, and it would appear now that they also have the consistency to make it big.

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
