Originally from the tropics of North Queensland, Jessie Lloyd is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musician who performs a broad collection of Australian Indigenous songs. A vocalist, guitarist, bassist and ukulele player, Jessie earned her formal qualifications at Abmusic in Perth, WA in 2002. Heralding from a musical family, her grandfather Albie Geia was the conductor of the Palm Island Brass Band and her father, Joe Geia, is considered a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous music and composer of the Aboriginal National Anthem ‘Yil Lull’.

Diat will also be yarning with Lydia Miller, Executive Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Australia Council with more than thirty years’ experience as a performer, artistic director, producer, administrator and advocate. She has extensive experience in the arts, health, justice and community sectors and was previously Executive Officer, NSW Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council. Lydia Miller is a Kuku Yalanji woman.

Scam Watch: Pyramid Schemes

The Indigenous Consumer Assistance Network (ICAN) has recently received a high volume of phone calls from our region regarding scams and pyramid schemes. So, it was timely that we brought them onto the radio to share helpful information and advice to our listeners.

Unaisi Buli and Sharon Edwards joined Jen Enosa to talk about the financial threats that scams and pyramid schemes pose in our communities. They also explained the importance of being able to identify a scam early to protect yourself and your family.

“The current scam is something called ‘Community Gifting’ which has been going around and shared on social media – they play on Torres Strait values of sharing and giving and are persistent… they are wolves dressed in sheep’s clothing,” said Sharon.

SeaSwift’s New Biosecurity Measures - to protect yumi region

SeaSwift are the key freight provider for our region and they have recently introduced new Biosecurity measures in place to ensure the safety of our region from pests. This may mean that some items will not be accepted as freight.

“We were approached by Biosecurity Queensland in late January, advising us that coming into effect on the 1st of February, there will be measures put in place to ensure that invasive animals and pests such as cane toads and electric ants don’t make their way northbound,” shared Ben Hemphill.

ZK Boxing Club – Ready for 2021

Ryan Shibsaski and Amos Lewin joined Luke Mosby on the Youth Hour to invite all community members on Thursday Island to join the ZK Boxing Club’s free public classes, run weekly.

The club was established in 2017 and is a passion for Ryan who is a professional boxer sharing his passion and knowledge with the youth of the Torres Strait.

Partnering with Community Justice and Torres Health, ZK Boxing is partly a crime prevention program and a way for people to improve their overall health and fitness.

“We’re affiliated with Sunstate Amateur Boxing League and we’re working on getting some of our young boxers in shape for upcoming tournaments,” said Amos.
