“Before making music together, they started by injecting each other with hormones. Drawing inspiration from the deconstructed noise transfem scene, Elie and Astra Octarine formed @ultracute a noise and computer music project using their DIY granulators. A duo of disassembled dolls who are followers of the post-(anti-)club for academic bitches, overly manipulated by FLINTA spaces and pronoun circles, whose tracks represent the destruction of their own confidence. Their first album was released in August on the swiss label Herzkern. Bodily autonomy for all and free Palestine.”

Ultra Cute drop tonight a Realist mix which is not deconstructivist as much as an abolition of anything but the refinding, an assertion of solidity in elision of any containment, reappropriation as a singular personhood in reference. The probability where an internet’s wealth of hyperkinetic and emotive music is matched with the virtuosic destruction availed by computational tools. An everyday ultimacy, where pop music, fidelity and becoming are enacted via an annihilatory euphoria at-hand, made by two artists who shy not from euphoria’s detumescence. This is neither an academic music nor a postmodern one. It is a statement that in the extremity of toolkits and interpretation is discovered that which illustrates labile circumstances and bodies that in an explosion of actuality escape their own definition. ~Definitionally new, but a music that negates such words.

Realist Alive Radio 030: Ultra Cute

SINN6R, Celyn June - 5 Geez x Veracity Scene (naramnesia mash)

Guildford’s crown prince of glitch @thorjn found full flower with the 2025 album Through The Crystal Window. Thorjn’s most recent record exists entirely in its own realm. It sounds like what Thorjn was making before... the distinction is that there is no longer a “like”. There’s no longer the “like” of external comparison either. Just an actuality & accomplishment of singular sonic vision, a nu-planet made from its own hands only, with pacific vistas, ludic dreams, an emergent post-humanity that is an ur-humanity sung out of this amalgamation of imagination, breakage, soul and wires. It’s a music simultaneously busy and luxuriant. It might need its own language, not from hyperbole but because why attempt elocute what is soaringly said in sounds that bear their own beyonds. I still don’t know the words that Thorjn sings on its last track. I don’t need to know what a ray of light feels when to welcome Summer.

Thorjn’s Realist mix is constructed from the music that influenced Crystal Window in its development and the music to influence Thorjn in its afterglow, as work proceeded on the forthcoming NOVOPANGEA. It flutters through all manner of new age, ambient, IDM and hyperglitch, forming a kind of companion to Crystal Window, exhibiting the same extraordinariness of world-building, invitations into reveries lain on terrains ordinarily inaccessible. Summatively, the mix is the imaging of a world you can only see through sound. It’s a testament to Thorjn’s talent that this world agglomerates pasts and presents, summons vistas via sense alone, renders everything picturesque and palpable - a biome and a paean conjured in the proof of the possibility of art.

Realist Alive Radio 031: Thorjn

There is no straightforward way to categorise @uniow as a producer with a geography, a tradition or a scene. Foremost visual artist and game designer yet, also, producer, a backdrop begins to explicate the challenge of categorisation. There’s no real satisfactory taxonomy for the music Uniow makes. Like overhearing posthardcore from a basement that is memory... a chamber music that confines yet defies containment. Almost all the Uniow tracks might have this similar approach, of a number of musics remembered and held in a hypnagogic fog of ingenuity, blending the online abrasion of hyperflip/glitch and mashcore with preservations of the voices of screamo, post-hardcore and noise. But like in the painting, the living things pinned and preserved escape from their immurement, and Uniow’s music has a comparable alchemy to it. Of a recontexualisation of the music that inspires him but one that refuses to be tribute or a simplified contrast, but which in its juxtapositions and their purgatorial yet implacable uniqueness proves a genuine originality.

Uniow’s Realist mix is a map of these juxtapositions and the music that forms them. Counterposing an intense rapidity of breaks with selections from hardcore and screamo, the two-sided technical attention that characterises Uniow’s productions is clear. These are tracks that shift in their structures and tempo. They follow not singular patterns or moods. They’re suprising in the suddeness of their transformations and revelatory in their imperfect grooves. They are abolitions of conventional ambience in the seeking of an actually expressive one. Derogations of hypnotism for the openness of reality. It is because of Uniow’s inspiration and celebration of the abrupt and bare imperfection that a portrait of a person and a past emerges from a mix. And then you have not a sequence of songs but a poetry of time and being.
