Enjoy a day of frank conversation, hearty debate, and an impressive lineup of panels and performance organized by dynamic artist duo Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw for their public art commission Hot Dog in the City. Food historians, competitive eaters, street vendors, sausage makers, authors, activists, and artists draw unexpected parallels between the history of the hot dog and capitalism, consumption, and politics of the American dream.

The critical issues unpacked from just beneath the skin of this unassuming sausage will include street vending and the American immigrant experience; food sovereignty; the patriarchy of meat-eating; gender bias in competitive eating; and more.

"The Conductor (Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi" is the 6th movement of a six-part video installation by Rashaad Newsome, known in total as "The Conductor." For the month of September from 11:57pm - Midnight it will play on the screens of Times Square as part of Midnight Moment, a presentation by the Times Square Advertising Coalition and Times Square Arts. Audience members in Times Square can cue this track up when the countdown clocks start on the participating screens in order to enjoy the original score of this piece in synch with the video.

"The Conductor” focuses on the performative gestural languages associated with MC-ing and Hip-Hop culture in general. The video is made up of footage from over one hundred Hip‐hop music videos. All of the footage is digitally enhanced and re‐edited to track the motion of the hands, bodies and mouths of the artists as well as their dancers. 

This labor-intensive process also extends to the audio. All six movements of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” are remixed using samples from the music of the artists whose hands are featured in the video. As “Carmina Burana” is considered the most epic choral piece to date the artist conducted a survey with local New York radio stations, Hot 97 and 105.1 to see who the public considered to be the most epic MC’s and producers in the Hip-Hop genre. The data from this survey determined who would be included in the video.
