Deep Concentration: The Grey Area mix 




The Grey Area mix is a collection of celebral minimalism from which is a speciality of Robert Hood.   Never before has there been an illustration of the many values of "grey" within the genre we call Minimal.
While Minimal is now a sound all on its own which varies from region to region, deep concentration takes you through the mind of one of it's pioneers for a close analysis of this particular variation. The Grey Area.

The Grey Area title refers to Rob's vision of Detroit techno and electronic music as the sound that occupied the forgotten zones of Detroit, the areas that became utilised for warehouse parties back in the day, and still humm and whirr with the timeless sound of technology long after the actual heavy indutry has gone. There's a soulfully longing thread tying the tracks together, from the opening anonymous tracks to Maurizio's 'M4.5' and on into previously unobserved depths with a slew of exclsuive and unreleased M-Plant style killers this is eactly the kind of selection that has won Mr. Hood a legion of devoted fans across the world, and has massively influenced the sound of the scene's biggest clubs, with Dettmann and Klock's brand of stripped but powerful techno house owing a massive debt to his sound. We're struggling to name many of the tracks here which is one of the best features of this mix, it's so fresh much of it hasn't even seen the light of day yet but we'd be massively grateful if any of the keener ears out there (or Hood himself) would like to send us a tracklist! Especially track 14, or 17, or 21, what the f**k are they?! If the Fabric mix left you asking for something that little bit deeper and nastier you can't sleep on this righteous mix. ESSENTIAL PURCAHSE!

Solid Steel (9th February) In Hour 1 we welcome Robert Hood, founding member of the legendary group Underground Resistance (with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks and Jeff Mills) following the release of his third and final installment in a trilogy of EP releases for Dekmantel Records, that initially began back in February 2016. 'Paradygm Shift Volume 3' embraces the trademark, minimal, funk techno sounds that defined his earlier career and is an extension on the concept as outlayed by Hood during the project’s conceptual stage: ‘‘The idea behind Paradygm Shift is similar to a shift in our focus. We can become so complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings, I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset.’’ He’s currently finalising a new EP due for release in April on his own M-Plant label.

Lars Sandberg AKA Funk D'Void, is a DJ and producer who has been involved in the global electronic music scene since the mid-90s. He started Djing at around the tender age of 15, running two under-18 clubs himself – a perfect start to his career. House music changed his life, the early Chicago sound specifically, and hearing the certain sounds during his childhood stirred something inside him; the 808 drum machine used on Marvin Gaye's “Sexual Healing” secured his fascination with these electronic sounds – the turning point over to the Detroit techno sound was almost a spiritual moment as it forged his unique sound that would follow over the coming years – visceral, soulful and without compromise. 

After a string of hits over the years (“Jack Me Off”, “Bad Coffee” “Emotional Content”) plus some killer remixes for the likes of Underworld, New Order and Kevin Saunderson, he is probably best known for the end-of-nighter 'Diabla' which bridged house and techno (and was flogged by everyone from Danny Howells to Sven Vath). Collaborations with such luminaries as Phil Kieran and more recently Sian have produced stellar results - further galvanising his diversity in the techno arena and has led us to the somewhat overdue arrival of his own personal label, Outpost. Much in demand DJ and critically acclaimed producer, his Djing style is everything you expect a true music lover’s taste to be: he is comfortable and adept at moving any dancefloor, the proof being that he is one of the busiest Djs on the circuit today, and has been for the last 15 years.

During the late 90's, Twilo was a NY institution. Hosting the legendary residency of Sasha & Digweed as well as Junior Vasquez's weekly residency during this time. There were two booths at Twilo - one which was built for Junior which was perched above the crowd and one for the guests which was just elevated above the floor on one end of the club.

Josh would embark on a residency at Twilo during this time that became an Ovum Recordings night which allowed him to showcase many of the artists releasing on the label. 

On this night the opening set was from DJ Dozia. This was also a special evening as it was the release party for Josh's mix compilation Profound Sounds Volume 1. During this time, the label was distributed by Sony Music worldwide and this was a big event having Josh playing in the labels home city. There were various press requests including a request to film. This was quickly shut down as there was no video to be taken inside the club (How times have changed!). Josh took over the decks and at this point in the evening legendary sound man Steve Dash would open up the system. As the headliner took over, it was like the room transformed. I can still envision the circular light that sat above the dance floor as well as the huge disco ball all coming to life as the set started to build. 

Well turn up the volume and prepare to dive into two hours of bliss as Mr. Josh Wink takes you on a journey showing his true musical diversity and understanding why many always called him the DJ's DJ.
