Swiss DJ and producer Noria Lilt completes the label’s catalogue for @strecke 's 14th issue. Heavily influenced by dance music and rave culture, Noria Lilt’s production process nevertheless tends towards acousmatic, experimental music and sound design. This EP presents the different corners of her artistic universe, in a 12’’ format as suitable for DJs as for home listening.
The duo @atricemiras and the producer & DJ @jockey_jay are also delivering two massive dubstep and stepper-influenced remixes!

Myth

Prolific Japanese producer T5UMUT5UMU has built up a reputation in the last few years for his ability not just to recreate club styles but to flip them into almost unrecognizable dancefloor hybrids. "Sea of Trees" follows a blistering run of Bandcamp releases where T5UMUT5UMU has melted together gqom and techno, deconstructed grime and welded dubstep to traditional music from Japan and India. Here, he's operating completely off the grid, pulling raw materials from across the globe and hammering them into confounding shapes and patterns.

On its surface, 'Fireball' sounds like a liquid metal approximation of South African gqom, but move in closer and you can make out dubstep bass squelches, trap hats, and industrial techno jet propulsion filling in the gaps with rubberized mortar. 'Desert' is the EP's most lightheaded cut, a psychedelic percussive spiral that curves micro-tuned mbira clangs around bee sting bass, aerated noise blasts and sub-aqueous kicks. It's a hard track to place, but fits in somewhere between Donato Dozzy, Menzi and 33EMYBW, all shifting rhythms and precision-edited sound design.

'Sea of Trees' retains this momentum, pushing the tempo and interspersing woodblock vibrations with syncopated bass drums and goosebump-inducing synths, while closer 'Bottomless Valley' shifts back into a gqom framework, shuffling the expected pulse with a powerful dembow swing, half step subs and Indian-inspired rattles. "Asyl" is a varied but shockingly coherent statement from an enigmatic producer who refuses to confine himself to a single path, and at a time when "cross-genre" is the norm rather than the exception, it's refreshing to witness a producer who's unafraid to truly make stylistic left-turns, rather than simply mash together top-level aesthetics.

It's been no secret that Poland marks as one of Europe's most significant melting pots of electronic computer music. Hand in hand with prominent festivals, adventurous labels, and the overall vivid culture of the niche genre, the country's breeding ground has raised countless talented and innovative up-and-coming producers. Having released music under his former moniker 'rużaw' as well as various projects including his widely acclaimed album 'Gluon' already as 'paszka' via Noumenal Loom, performing at Unsound and often collaborating with his partner or peers, the Krakow's very own Szymon Sapalski already is an established name among the ever-flourishing local matrix. Named after the word 'laptop' repeatedly misspelled by his friend's grandma, paszka now presents his follow-up longplay 'lapton' via Gin&Platonic.

On lapton, paszka has achieved to graft fierce rhythms and defragmented particles of contemporary pop music onto his signature hyper manic and rigorous sound design. But where the quirky record kinda innocently starts as lanparty-gone-goofy-by-personal-computers-taking-over-their-masters-playlistst and beyond a CPU-overload-from-granny's-healthresort-vacation-powerpoint-photocollection, it suddenly slows down onto jovial sketch of Goofy the Dog's presentation of approximate 5-year prediction of development of global prices of uranium, then 'lapton' quickly speeds up and darkens onto a mighty-microtonalism-motherboard-epilepsy, a melodramatic-bluescreen-glitchcore-blues. Shattered to many directions yet strangely coherent, paszka's fastidious music remains both geeky and candidly ludicrous.

@nozagam is a solo project by French experimental-club producer Etienne Zastko who takes a bleak view of a destructive Anthropocene Epoch, in which “utopias can’t exist and we’ve lost our way in our blind devotion to technology”. The album pieces together a chronology of catastrophic events. A fictionalized soundtrack to humankind’s end-cycle. The abrasive textures and suffocating atmosphere immerse us into a total universe where everything that could have gone wrong has. Affirmations and tech bro optimism didn’t quite cut it. And if those disembodied voices that sporadically reach out are the survivors, that’s not good news.

The visual aesthetic of Zagam is one of fusion, a medieval plague doctor mask with a 23rd-century twist. “Anthropocene” mines a similarly disparate set of influences, spanning an evermore hybridized clubspace. Gqom, grime, industrial techno, footwork: everything is fair game. The rich musical background and hard sonic palette of Zagam make for a perfect match for the hybrid electronics approach of Unizone.

Knives follow this Summer’s Kuedo OST release with a club tool EP from DJ / producer duo, Know V.A. 

'Hibernation' traces ecstatic elements from the hard dance music familiar to their formative experience growing up in Holland, and fuses them with more UK leaning frameworks of late 90s techstep and late 00s vaporous grime, forming an ode to the romantic nostalgia of a shared club experience. Across the 5 tracks on 'Hibernation', Know V.A. set baroque string and choral arrangements into orbit around a hypnotic meandering of fierce gabber stabs and chattering percussion - at once reminiscent of both devine, classical ceremony and flailing club experience, drenched in sweat.

Know V.A. have performed internationally for a range of promoters and venues, such as Boiler Room and Stedelijk Museum. They curate the event and club night ‘Strange Days’, which seeks to showcase contemporary hardcore experimentalism and explore how the genre, sonically and visually has remained active in the underground. Their soundtrack work includes music for Calvin Klein and the acclaimed hardcore documentary 'Thunderdome Never Dies'. 

A collaborative artwork for the project is provided in the form of an emblem designed by artist Nicholas Law, subsequently animated by Winston Duke.

As of 2020 Knives is an independent project, now separate from any parent label.
