Too Much Noise

During Summer 1988 when The Secret Society (Rev 2) was recording songs for their debut release at Horse and Buggy Highway Studios, we recorded tracks with various guitarists.  One such guitarist was Dirk Frey from The Secret Society (Rev 1).  This mix of How Do Rocks Multiply (Solution IV) features a recently unearthed recording with Dirk Frey on guitar.

If new-wave, the late 70's to early 80's genre of mostly synthesizer/guitar-driven music that was somewhere between pop-rock and goth, should make a return to popularity as it appears to be trying to do, The Search have certainly released a(nother) 12-song resource for how to do it right. Following the lead that bands like Interpol have taken, there are more bands today beginning to embrace the style that The Cure, The Chameleons, The Sound and even Joy Division originated. Technology has taken us far past the point at which these bands first started to digitally experiment, but on their 3rd studio album "Deranged Minds Unite", The Search have backed off today's available resources just enough to create something that sounds vintage new-wave. What is amazing is how authentic The Search sounds. The band takes what was cutting edge twenty years ago and somehow keeps it fresh, and without sounding silly. The music is lush and polished, while Razmigs' vocals are dark and lovely. "Deranged Minds Unite" sounds smooth and tuneful, with more hooks than a tackle box, and the production is excellent. Listen with an open mind, and you may just surprise yourself.

Floating Fish Studios held its first Synth Jam Session of 2015 at FFS II on 01/01/15.  Fresh from Imbued Vagary’s live streaming event on NYE 2015, the ensemble gathered included M Scott McConnell (aka MC2P4), Dave Chandler (aka Thee Sub One Genius), and Matt Norcross (aka Ttam Troll).

On this track, titled You’re Different, a sample taken from the 1981 Michael Crichton movie, Looker, played from an Ensoniq EPS was used to create the atmospheric basis of the improv.  Those familiar with the film should recognize the sound of the L.O.O.K.E.R. (Light Ocular-Oriented Kinetic Emotive Responses) gun.  MC2P4 contributed Korg Z1 pads, Thee Sub One Genius added virtual instrument sound effects, while Ttam Troll layered even more Looker samples and Ensoniq ESQ-1 pads to complete the track.

This opening drone from FFS II Synth Jam 2010 - Drones on 07/24/10 captures a performance by Dave Chandler (aka Thee Sub One Genius - pictured above) and M Scott McConnell (aka MC2P4). It set a perfect tone for the sessions and, upon my arrival and a trip to Fujiyama, we delved further into atonal soundscapes.

This improv was titled TR-1.

Imbued Vagary - TR-1 (Live at FFS II 07/24/10)

As Dungeon Aire, we had quite an eclectic and adventurous set list for our first and only gig on 12/31/87 at "Number 9" in Shippensburg, PA.  It included such diverse songs as Led Zeppelin - Misty Mountain Hop, The Cult - Wildflower, The Suburbs - Monster Man, Mondo Rock - Primitive Love Rights, and even two original songs (Pung and Progressions) that we had written.  Somewhere between all of that, we also chose to perform INXS - Need You Tonight.

Here is a jam box recording from the show which features Brad Shaeffer - Vocals, Matt Skirpan - Guitar, Matt Norcross - Bass, Scott McConnell - Synthesizers, and Tim Harrell - Drum Machine.  It's the only song that Tim played the drum machine.

Release Notes:
Presented here as the third release in our Noise series are a set of performance rehearsals, we had for the 05/21/16 Experimental Music/Noise show in Pittsburgh, PA. The planned exercise was to single out a set of hardware synthesizers for use in this specific performance environment. Though some may think of something related to a rehearsal and/or named “noise” should be relegated to the cutting room floor, Imbued Vagary takes our rehearsals and “noise” very seriously. Rehearsing with lights, lasers, and fog, we want to ensure our own peak awareness of the experience that we plan to share with our audience. Of course, we record all of these moments. The recordings for this release are taken from camcorder mono audio tracks so the quality is not as good as what would be expected from an Imbued Vagary release, but you do get to hear the fog machine belching out smoke during the recording. That should make up for the “lesser” quality recording. Shouldn’t it?
