In Hour 2 our guest is DJ Vadim who first appeared on Solid Steel in 1996 back in the Kiss FM days and has featured regularly since. He steps up with a mix dedicated to his love of hip hop, reggae and dancehall, and for him 'they are like brother and sister, children of the same parents, same struggles and desires. Different in production, but share so many things in common'. It's another perfect mix for a hot day in London and features music from Yelloman, Roots Manuva, General Levy, Cutty Ranks and Top Cat, plus music from Vadim himself ahead of his new album Dubcatcher which is out on BBE next week.

Our latest label podcast comes from Klute, a producer, DJ and all-round drum and bass stalwart that’s been on the circuit for over 20 years. 

Klute has always made it clear that drum and bass isn’t the only genre that he wants to involve himself in - from founding hardcore punk band The Stupids to also releasing a bountiful amount of techno - he is a man of many talents, something that is showcased in his eclectic 90 minute podcast.

@aroop-roy has come from seemingly nowhere to become a major force in recent times, with his eclectic blend of disco, house and worldly flavours fusing brilliantly on smash releases like Talkin Bout Life and his sumptuous My Home EP on Lazy Days Recordings. But he’s been grinding for a minute, having first released in 2007, putting out a debut album in 2010 and a steady stream of 12”s since. It just goes to show that talent and persistence always wins in the end. His Monologues mix shows a producer in full swing, with some of his very tasty edits woven in along the way plus a preview of his upcoming Delusions Of Grandeur EP.

*How would you describe your sound?* 

I make a wide range of music with few genre barriers. A lot of my dancefloor releases blend organic and soulful sounds including african, Latin, jazz and funk music, with deeper elements of house and modern disco music. 

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* - 

My sound reflects my eclectic tastes. I grew up listening to everything from rock, pop and hip hop to soul, jazz and classical. Living in Brighton, I had access to a vibrant community of record stores and this together with radio also opened up the world of dance music. I've played in indie bands, funk bands and even a Jimi Hendrix covers band (I was indeed Jimi!). It would be impossible to make a comprehensive list of influences, but a few examples would include Herbie Hancock, Fela Kuti, Radiohead, The Mizell Brothers, Azymuth. The radio shows of Gilles Peterson and Brighton hero Russ Dewbury were also hugely important in opening my ears even further.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The mix is a collection of releases from the past few years right up to a few forthcoming cuts, combining original tracks, collaborations, reworks and a few edits. It represents the diversity of my output but also joins the dots between tracks that might initially seem to be very different to each other.

In Hour 2 it's Brame & Hamo from Sligo, Ireland and currently based in Berlin, who have expertly produced some of the most effortless house music of the last few years via their first imprint Splendor & Squalour. In 2017 they launched their eponymous second label with the Trants EP to critical acclaim. Their latest EP “Celebrity Impersonator” came out last month and they had this to say about their mix;
"It has been ages since we have put out a mix, and it’s a pleasure to join the Solid Steel series as it is one of our favorites and has shaped who we are as artists. This is a good account of the tunes and style we play when we are out at a gig. It features a few rare gems, and some unreleased but forthcoming productions of ours. We hope you enjoy!”

Following the success of Edition One, Dutch sensations Kraak and Smaak drop a brand new sixteen-track Boogie Angst compilation of the finest cuts from their label, alongside a whole host of exclusive, forthcoming material. It’s a delectable collection of soulful, funk inspired house, downtempo beats and indie infused electronica. Dutch homegrown talent Feiertag opens up the compilation with the beautifully cinematic ‘Bunraku’, harnessing the innate soul emanating from David Harks’ vocals. This dreamy, downbeat thread runs through a number of the tracks, providing a healthy balance between the more dancefloor-orientated joints. Take to Snacks’ slo-mo piano trip ‘Daydream’, Meeka Kates and Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez’s evocatively soulful, R&B infused ‘No’ or Moods’ syncopated, electronic exploration of analogue warmth, ‘Lost Translation’ (exclusive to this comp) for prime examples of this meditative bliss.

From indie disco three-piece Patawawa, providing an electro tinged, synth boogie gem, to the shimmering modern funk laid down by Oakland’s E.Live on ‘Got Me Good’. Other highlights include hotly tipped Turkish multi-instrumentalist, Kerem Akdag, interweaving spiritual synth work and soulful vocal refrains over a dusty, lo-fi house beat on ‘I’m Young’, alongside Balearic deep house authority, Luvless marrying enchantingly introspective synths with a sunset styled aesthetic for ‘Hush’.  A Boogie Angst showcase wouldn’t be complete without a smattering of funk flecked, disco leaning, club-ready weapons. I Gemin joins forces with Castanea to showcase this expertly through their sun-kissed piano house anthem, ‘Fall In Love’ laced with melancholic Brazilian vocals and squelching bassline. Elsewhere, New-Zealand newcomers A Band Called Success let loose on an MPC styled, dancefloor hazer, whilst Vhyce lays out an 80’s inspired, indie imbued cut, providing the perfect backdrop for Yves Paquet’s reverberated tones. 

With their 6th studio album not far off, Dutch maestros Kraak and Smaak also treat the compilation to recently released set-up single, ‘I’ll Be Loving You’. Teaming up with long-time vocal collaborator IVAR, they channel a slice of the summer into this irresistible, funk-laden, pool party jam. Cowbell heat a plenty!
