Can You Hear Me

'Connemara Landscape (Wind Study)' (2022) uses the post-impressionist paintings of Belfast-born painter Paul Henry as a departure point, to create a ‘sonic landscape’. The artwork is an attempt to collaborate with the weather by focusing on the wind as its subject matter, drawing on anthropologist Tim Ingold’s idea of ‘correspondences’ (where humans respond with sensitivity, care and judgement to other beings, matter and elements). 

The work explores the idea of collaboration and correspondence with the wind by using a number of sound recording techniques that focus on ‘macro’ soundscapes, to ‘micro’ moments of resonance and musicality, created by objects and plants interacting with the wind. 

The work was created in March 2022, while on residency at Interface, Connemara, situated in the remote locale of the Inagh Valley. It was presented as a surround-sound installation, as part of the sound biennale Sonorities, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 6 – 10 April 2022.

This episode focuses on a video made by AM Baggs in 2007, a non-speaking autistic writer, activist and artist from the USA. It features reflections by actor and autistic self-advocate, Eleanor Walsh, as well as Maria Ní Fhlatharta and Eilionóir Flynn of the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
