 When I was  eighteen, I left Geneva behind  
 Searching for something, a  place to rewind  
Through  Spain and through Italy,  Greece and the sea 
CYPRUS to Israel, the  road carried me

Then to Ethiopia,  the land met my soul  
 First time my father’s  arms took hold  
 A ranch once a kingdom,  now cattle and dust  
 In Addis a home, but the  road called to us

 Debbie beside me,  pretty and free  
 The Volkswagen rolling,  just her and me

 Stranded on the highway, no sign of the end  
The sun sinking lower, no  help, no friend  
Shadows were watching, spears in their hands  
Fate held its breath in this  foreign land  

 Stranded in Africa, the dust in the air  
The silence was heavy, like  unspoken prayer  
Hearts beat like war drums, waiting for fate  
Would they walk on, or  seal our escape?

 Then like a shadow, a  car pulled in slow  
 Araya stepped out, said,  "Someone will know" 
 A two-seater benz,  but no room for two  
 He vanished ahead, and we  prayed he’d come through

The wind carried whispers, their footsteps drew near   
Hearts beating louder, tangled with fear  
Then one reached his hand out, not a word, not a sound  
Just pointed behind us, to where help would be found

Some carry grievances
They refuse to evaluate.

Trump has misunderstood the nature of power in a democracy at home, too. Rather than building domestic coalitions to support the government, he is overseeing the takeover of the government by a radical minority that seems to think the way to build power is for the government to attack its own people.

The administration’s defunding of scientific research, medical care, environmental protection, food safety and security, and emergency management all threaten Americans’ health, safety, and security. Its attacks on history and education, as well as its firing of women and racial and gender minorities, seem designed to drive wedges among Americans. Its incarceration and disappearing of undocumented migrants both creates an “other” for Trump loyalists to hate and provides a warning of what could happen to the regime’s opponents.

Now, under the guise of fighting crime, the administration has quite literally turned guns on the American people.
