Kleerup had spent the early part of 2014 experimenting on new ideas and technology, and had begun to sketch out some basic ideas. But then tragedy stuck with the death of his mentor Christian Falk. “He really was like family, friend and mentor – he was everything,” sighs Kleerup. A year prior, Kleerup had hit upon the sort of bouncing, insistent bass groove that Falk himself had mastered so well. Perhaps as a subliminal way of addressing his loss, Kleerup revisited the idea and soon had something strong enough to share with kindred spirit Susanne Sundfør (Björk, Röyksopp, M83) who added the mesmeric topline. And so the upcoming single “Let Me” In was born – a song which captures the adventurous spirit of Kleerup’s earlier work while pushing the Eighties influence to a new level.

“Let Me In” will be impossible to evade in the coming months as it leads a global H&M campaign which is complemented by visuals directed by the legendary Jonas Åkerlund (Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beyoncé, to name but a few). Again inspired by his prior work with Falk, Kleerup is using the exposure to reintroduce himself to the world just as he did when he was a rising talent: “Let Me In” previews the release of the new mini-album entitled “As If We Never Won “(the title track of which features Maja Ivarsson from The Sounds), and a second mini-album will follow early next year ahead of a new full-length record.

The new material is the result of Kleerup’s continuing self-discovery. “My first album was about relationships that didn’t work out, the Me and My Army album was about good versus bad, and “Aniara” was all about confronting mortality,” he explains. “As an artist, a lot of stuff has happened in my life since the last album, but everything’s a bit easier now, thank God. Along the way, I’ve learned two things: 1) everything that  happens in the world is not my fault and 2) other people may have a point!”

Once more, it seems that Kleerup’s most personal songs will be the work that connects with the public on a global scale.

I didn't understand it at the time. I fail to achieve any degree of understanding in the ensuing years, which are three in number. I presume Herb means that inherently you cannot be commercial and artistic. You cannot be commercial and quality. You cannot be commercial concurrent with have a preoccupation with the level of storytelling that you want to achieve. And this I have to reject. I don't think calling something commercial tags it with a kind of an odious suggestion that it stinks, that it's something raunchy to be ashamed of. I don't think if you say commercial means to be publicly acceptable, what's wrong with that?
As long as you are not ashamed of anything you write if you're a writer, as long as you're not ashamed of anything you perform if you're an actor, and I'm not ashamed of anything.
This is the area I know. But I think innate in what Herb says is the suggestion made by many people that you can't have public acceptance and still be artistic. And, as I said, I have to reject that.

Horixon are London based outfit Andrew Armstrong and Joe Sambrooke. For their first few tracks they asked house vocalist legend Robert Owens and the enigmatic Jacques Teal to do the honours. The fit with Robert Owens on ‘Brighter Day’ was perfect, updating his delivery to something modern, as well as keeping it classic and referencing strongly the sound of early house. Same goes for ‘Great Things’: perfect match with the introspective vocals of Jacques Teal. The track is dreamy and melancholic, simply beautiful.

We invited Locked Groove to remix ‘Brighter Day’. Scuba himself signed him to Hotflush for his debut release and his remix of Duke Dumont’s ‘The Giver’ on Turbo received praise from respected names in the industry. More recently we’ve seen him broadening his sound on labels such as Permanent Vacation and John Talabot’s Hivern Discs released his long awaited remix of ‘It’s All over’ by Pional. His remix of ‘Brighter Day’ is pure magic and a perfect soundtrack to a never-ending night out in Berlin.

‘Great Things’ will be one of the many standout tracks on The Green Collection.
