Don’t Ask Me Why - Hillbilly Joels

Decided to freshen up this tune with the help of Nick Reeb on fiddle, Jake Hopping on banjo, and our old pal Sav Sankaran from Unspoken Tradition on bass. 

“The Death of Little Joe”, and often “Darling Little Joe”, dates all the way back to 1866 and has been recorded by many of the bluegrass and country music greats from the Carter Family and Bill Monroe in 1938, to Mac Wiseman in 1966, and Ralph Stanley and the Country Gentleman in 1970s. My personal favorite is from Home in Sulpher Springs. Norman Blake picked it as the kick-off song to his legendary debut album in 1972, and I think his mellow but masterful vocal style and flat-picking serve as the perfect canvas and paintbrush for the beautiful imagery in this heartbreaking lyric.
