Put on your red shoes and dance the blues, cause Italy’s Hugo is back
in action! The original “Stel and Atan” was first released in 2007,
before Hugo’s breakthrough TuningSpork hit “The Sloop”, so he and
label founder Jay Haze felt the time was right to revisit this
neglected funkbomb. Hugo’s upgraded version, the “Ivory Pleated Pants”
remix, shows off his refined approach to what can only be described as
Slapstick House – this is one looney tune that will leave the
dancefloor swaying under the moonlight. Jay Haze’s “Iridescent
Spandex” remix retains the sense of humor, but brings things to a
deeper level for a groove that will suck you in like a riveting
episode of Lost. Or Murder She Wrote. Angela Lansbury was a fox!


Hugo - Stel and Atan (Hugo's Ivory Pleated Pants remix)

Alex Celler has made quite a splash in 2009! Since his TuningSpork debut EP Trapped in Dub, he’s had a hit record “La Palma” for Arearemote, and consequently teamed up with fellow Londoner Anthea of Phonica Records. As Anthea & Celler they released a pair of 12”s for Freak N Chic and Cécille, and now their third effort as a duo appears on TuningSpork.

“Down with G.O.D.” is a chunky and forceful workout, fuelled by Jesus Juice, with a distorted bass bounce and vaporous dub overtones that just might make the dancefloor break down and speak in tongues. Then comes the remix from TuningSpork boss Jay Haze, where the deepness gets bumped up a notch and his trademark onslaught of snare drums keeps things moving. Original house gangster DJ Sneak concocts a bold blend with two parts percolating Chicago attitude and one part French filter house.  Finally, as a digital bonus, Michal Ho recontextualizes the track’s most familiar elements into a smooth, velvety melodic motif. 

Man cannot live on bread alone; he needs a hearty dose of funk, TuningSpork style!


Anthea & Celler - Down with G.O.D. (Jay Haze's Not Down with G.O.D. mix)

Belgian producers Sierra Sam & Marcus Vector return to their house-oriented project D.I.Y. (Dumb Irresponsible Youth) for three more sly, sexy groovers, with contributions from dOP, Big Bully and Markus Fix.

While Sam and Marcus are generally known for their more techno-focused productions, last year’s House Tools Vol. 1 was a minor hit, with tracks included in Ellen Allien’s Resident Advisor podcast, Jay Haze’s recent Fabric47 mix CD, and M.A.N.D.Y.’s charts. Since then, they’ve kept busy with their own Toys For Boys label; meanwhile Sierra Sam has co-produced the debut album by Bloody Mary on Contexterrior. Still, they’ve found the time to crank out these new elegant-yet-sleazy cuts, and while Vol. 1 was purely instrumental, for Vol. 2 they’ve roped in some guest vocalists. First up is their collab with comrades dOP (Circus Company, Eklo, Supplement Facts). “Kilimanjaro” features D.I.Y.’s tribal bounce combined with dOP’s seedy, Trent Reznor-on-opiates vocal delivery. The flipside has two versions of “Suck my Caulk”: D.I.Y.’s original elevates the level of melody and sunshine, weaving in the voice of Big Bully (known for his work on Spectral, Get Physical and Vakant). Markus Fix of Cécille offers his own interpretation, bringing the track down into deep house territory. Placed in the right hands, these tools can do some serious dancefloor damage!

Signor Andreoni and Alessio Mereu team up yet again for another solid effort as Bunkers! Although they have just formed this year, this Italian superduo has already released three EPs, with their most recent finding itself at the #1 position on Richie Hawtin’s chart for September. 

Aside from his work in Bunkers, Mereu has appeared on a variety of labels like CMYK, Harthouse and Toys For Boys. Meanwhile, producer and classically trained guitarist Andreoni is known for his releases (both solo and in collaboration with Samim) on TuningSpork. 

From the swelling tension of “Holding Back” that evokes suppressed love, to the staccato onomatopoeia in “Please Say Whoo”, to the swingy and syncopated soul of “Back to Reality” – it’s clear that Bunkers have mastered the house tradition of tension, buildup and release. The vinyl and download versions of the EP each come with an exclusive fourth track: the melancholy “Coming and Going” and the ragtimey “Highs and Lows”, respectively.

Bunkers - Holding Back

TuningSpork was founded by Jay Haze, Sean O'Neal, and Bjoern Hartmann in Philadelphia in 1999. The trio threw a series of parties with the aim of bringing in their favorite national and international DJs to the region. The brand soon developed into a record label, and the first three 12"s were split releases featuring one track from each producer (under their aliases The Architect, Someone Else, and B. respectively). The label soon carved its own trademark sound, often described as funky house with a sense of humor, avant-garde and tongue-in-cheek at the same time. As TuningSpork's profile grew to an international level, Jay Haze relocated the label headquarters to Berlin in 2003, sharing a studio space with Ricardo Villalobos. Talented producers from around the world, new and established, found a home for their productions: Dan Curtin, Michal Ho, Samim, and Guido Schneider are a few examples. Over the years, TuningSpork has been a dependable source of functional yet artful dance tracks for DJs around the world, supported to this day by some of the biggest names such as Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall, and Laurent Garnier.
