Jazz has fascinated people since its inception and has become so revered that it quickly moved beyond the borders of the United States and gathered a large audience all over the world, including in Soviet Armenia. The first jazz band of Yerevan was founded in 1936, by composer Tsolak Vardazaryan. In 1938, composer and cellist Artemi Ayvazyan, firstly in the USSR, founded the Armenian State Jazz Orchestra. Starting from the 1960s new ensembles which performed even English-language songs began to form in Soviet Armenia. However, the heyday of jazz in Armenia fell on one of the most difficult periods of life of the country. During the years, this music evolved and integrated sonority of funk and disco but always with strong bond to traditional music. Indeed, the utilisation of traditional instruments like Duduk or Armenian Oud is current also in contemporary music. In this personal selection you can briefly discover a part of the jazz scene in Armenia, from past to present, sometimes with funky disco references.
