EXT041 - Bass Stuff, marks the emergence of the most recent alias “Dun Dun”, by the Portuguese producer Diogo Vasconcelos.

Essentially marked by timbral richness and an elaborate programming of percussion sounds, “Bass Stuff” draws some of its inspiration from the worlds of Gqom and Dancehall.

“Bass Uppers” and “Abambo” make up the first part, where the references to Gqom are more evident, ending up being almost like two versions of the same song, where the same elements are articulated in different ways, taking into account the tempo over which they are built upon.

“Can’t Stop” and “Get Them!”, find themselves more inspired by the slow and warm rhythms of Dancehall, without ever leaving aside the sonic palette that structures the entire album, and which is also built around a somehow dark atmosphere, and where voice samples are predominantly used as rhythmic interjections.

The EP closes with a bombastic remix by Will Bowen, aka Pluralist. Picking up “Abambo”, he removes it from any kind of inhibitions and transforms it into a luminous bomb for the dance floor, completed with a section featuring triplet kicks. Maximum respect for this artist! Just hoping that Dun Dun’s release will be able to do you justice.

Still glowing from the celestial afterburn of their ‘Sailing To Valinor’ compilation, Prague-based imprint Moving Pictures return to the radar with another evocative transmission ‘Climax’, a five-part mind sculpture from London-based producer Rico Casazza...But it’s Casazza’s own ambient recast of ‘Remind me pls’ that truly levitates off the tracklist. Ditching the grid for a free-floating drift, the reinterpretation unfurls like an abandoned love letter on a space station console. Swells of melancholic synth stretch across low-pressure bass currents, while ghosted whispers flicker like dying satellites. Time dissolves into mood, and spectral soundscapes becomes a carrier wave for emotion only half-remembered, an audio séance carved for the soft machinery of the heart.

Gesaffelstein's 'Variations' EP set an all-time record for feedback at Turbo. For a new artist to attract that kind of attention from such a broad cross-section of DJs is extremely special and a clear sign that he's tapped in to something very, very big. To the younger generation of clubbers and DJs for whom the funtastic era of 2001-2003 revivalism was a missed experience, Gesaffelstein represents a double-breasted jacket of nostalgia for everything from the power of Industrial and 80s New Wave to the Gigolo-glam of early Kittin & the Hacker, Steril, Vitalic, Fixmer, and yes, Tiga.
 
We have no hesitation in declaring that he has single-handedly updated an entire genre, sharpened the edges, and notably traded in the camp and pastiche that made Electroclash a dirty word for a refined and stylish simplicity. The breakdowns are massive and very French, but never out of order. These are futuristic party bombs which skillfully draw from our favourite dance music of the last 30 years... and add more cowbell!

SWOT EP

Finnish Musician’s Magician Jori Hulkkonen discusses the arcane analytical methods that inform his creative process.

With the release of this EP, it’s been 15 months since my last release as Jori Hulkkonen. The album Man From Earth (Turbo Recordings) was a bit of a departure from my previous LPs, as it was clearly more club-oriented. Since that album, I’ve mainly focused on producing (Villa Nah, Night Satan) and working on new projects, such as the full analogue hardware liveshow as dRUMMAN, and the follow-up album for Processory, my collaborative synthpop duo with Jerry Valuri.

Incidentally, it’s been exactly 15 years since my debut album Selkäsaari Tracks (F Communications).

So it felt like a good time do a bit of soul-searching; looking back without turning around. The Finnish educational system (ranked no. 1 in the world; see OECD's PISA survey) has given me the tools for this: SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). 

SWOT is a method that was developed in the 60s at Stanford University, originally as a tool to evaluate business ventures, but it can be just as easily applied almost anywhere. So, I give you a SWOT analysis of my career as a producer as I see it in 2011:

STRENGTHS: Structures. Structures have always been what I'm good at: building elaborate constructions on solid foundations. Be it a song, an EP, an album, a DJ set, or the biggest structure of them all, a career, I find the direction and execution very easy to conceptualize.

WEAKNESSES: Referring to the above, the bigger the structure, the easier it is to see the big picture. When it comes to clubmusic that is traditionally more song/track-based rather than album-based, I feel it sometimes may be a disadvantage, as not every track has that instant floorpotential when taken out of context of their parent album/EP etc.

OPPORTUNITIES: With a recording career spanning over two decades and a record collection of over 13,000 12"s, there's a wealth of musical influences to tap into, which combined with musical creativity and constant curiosity could lead us on to the much-awaited next level.

THREATS: The abovementioned ends up sounding like a lame pastiche of a thousand records done years ago, and to compensate I throw in more jazzy chords and lush strings resulting it all failing miserably.

Jori Hulkkonen’s SWOT EP will be released on XXXXX, giving dance scholars the tools they need to successfully defend their groove-thesis.
