An unconventional artist who refuses to be constrained by genre boundaries Emika has long been able to count us a fans; her unique compositions have continually moved with the ever-evolving world of electronic music, her amalgamation of her signature dark textures with beats and vocals as evidenced on her last two albums consistently impressing.

She's been keeping customarily busy of late, with the launch of her label and the release of many dancefloor persuasions garnering her plaudits aplenty. A busy woman then, but deservedly so. Luckily for us, she took some time out of her hectic schedule to deliver a special live set in the DT bunker the last time she landed in London. We've featured Wayward on these pages before, and if early indications are anything to go by, this duo is most certainly set for the top. Having enjoyed something of a crazy 2017 (playing high-profile gigs at the likes of Secret Garden Party and Bestival as they went), the boys also enjoyed early success courtesy of tracks such as ‘Transcence’, which proved a massive hit on Spotify where it's amassed over 2 million listens since its release.

Following up the latter with the 'Alexandra' EP (which was remixed by the likes of Man Power and Hammer), the lads usher in 2018 here courtesy of another fitting summary of their talents. The beatifully named ‘Good Afternoon Mr.Magpie’ EP speaks volumes about the curious, meandering nature of their work, and with five killer cuts on show it’s a release that’s positively stuffed to the brim with classy, melancholic fare.

We’re particularly feeling the release’s finale, ‘Human Spirit’. A fitting example of everything that’s great about this burgeoning duo, its a heartfelt track that isn’t afraid to let its emotions roam free. An intoxicating and hypnotic cut, it’s a classy gem of the type that’s sure to lift your spirits this weather.

Iñigo Vontier, Roman & Castro - Ciudad Maldita


Something really great is happening South of the US Border and some of that magic is presented in this release by Roam Recordings alumi Iñigo Vontier as he partners with Roman & Castro to present the Ciudad Maldita EP. Mexico meets Chile in this excellent collaboration to bring three sophisticated floor bangers together into one EP. Sau Sau starts the release out with a wicked groove, vocal stabs, and elegant percussion. Smog moves a bit further into techno territory with its driving bass stabs underpinning a dizzying spattering of electronics woven to accentuate the hypnotic rhythm. Callejón offers a bit more left feild vibes with its electro beat under synth infused soundscapes.

Rounding out the EP is an excellent dark and pretty remix from the master Timothy J Fairplay who brings old school vibes with a lofi acid motif. 

The Ciudad Maldita EP fits the Roam Recordings moto quite nicely with these four accomplished artists pushing things into left field while keeping true to discerning dance floor.

Turbo Recordings was founded by Tiga in Montreal back in 1998. “We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
