Turbo Recordings is humbled to present this lovingly rendered reissue of Neutron 9000’s lost ambient trance classic. Composed and recorded at London’s Orinoco Studios in 1994 by Dominic Woosey, Lady Burning Sky was originally released on the legendary UK label Rising High.

Turbo prides itself on living in the moment and fighting for the future, and this rare excursion into the past is arguably the most forward-looking release of the next five years. To learn how this is possible, we sat down with label owner Tiga, for whom this represents a true passion project.

Why a reissue?

I live my life with no regrets. That said, I do see the value in righting the wrongs of history and shining a light on music that hasn’t received the recognition it deserves. I’ve never met anyone who knows Lady Burning Sky, and it'’s usually the first thing I ask as a way of establishing dominance. This album has been a constant companion of mine for decades, and it’s high time others got in on that companionship.

What is your history with Neutron 9000?

I met Dominic Woosey on my first trip on my own to Europe. Yeah, I was a Eurail Kid, stowing away in sleeper cars and riding the winds of culture across the continent. I got Dominic’s number through a mutual friend, and when I met up with him in Berlin. he instantly became the coolest person I had ever met, which is crazy when you consider I grew up in Quebec. It was like I had fallen in with Berlin techno royalty, an eager young squire getting my first glimpse of a kingdom I had no idea existed.

What was so special about him?

He was the only person I knew who was into early trance, but he wasn’t a new age hippie. He was aloof. He was witty. He took the piss. And this album reflects that. It’s like hardcore ambient. It is distinctly not about peace, love, and unity, and that made a real impression on me.

The album originally came out on Rising High, which was my favorite label at the time. And while a lot of early 90s stuff has been revived, this hasn’t. There simply aren’t that many albums this good that have remained largely unknown.

Why is this such an important release for you?

Ambient has perhaps the lowest bar to clear in all of music, and Lady Burning Sky stands out as a real record by a real multidimensional artist, something no one else could have made. As someone who chilled out super fucking hard throughout the 90s, I can say with full confidence that it is a true anomaly in the genre, as tangibly great a the best pop and dance music. It was made with a real record company budget, but is completely uncompromising and uncommercial. This album should not exist, but it does. And you should not be hearing it, yet you are. I once said that real art is a celebration of the impossible. That sounded great at the time, and now it rings truer than ever as you come to realize this secret flame has endured all along. A lifetime burning doing the neutron dance.

If you know anything about Big Tech, you know disruption’s the name of the game. For some reason, we’re betting that this applies to techno too, and we feel the latest EP from Cora Novoa is a game-changer on the scale of Windows Vista.

Hot off appearing on the cover of of Mixmag Spain (beating out Spanish Steve Aoki for the honor), the Barcelona-based producer, creative director and researcher follows up her killer 2020 Twin Turbo release, Black Out, with Two Faces, which cements her place as one of the major artists populating today’s techno landscape, which itself is made of cement. These five massive tracks evoke the deep space claustrophobia of consumer-grade interplanetary travel, exporting our emotional intelligence and expert playlist curation to grateful distant worlds. This is the sound of the logical endpoint of all rave culture, where DJs will be replaced by an app you beg to not cut the oxygen.

Two Faces is packaged with a custom Instagram face filter, which satisfies a longtime mandate from label management to make our audience better-looking. Turbo will also be producing a T-shirt for the release, aimed at those who dare to walk between two worlds, navigating the virtual/analog divide with the grace and artistry of a tightrope dancer. The EP also marks the occasion of Turbo’s first NFT, a combination of the face filter and artwork. Sold on Foundation, it will instantly become the least fungible thing you will ever own, and a possible bargaining chip to offer the AI that’s been blackmailing you. Please note that Tiga is under the impression that NFTs are pronounced “Nifty’s” so do not try to disabuse him of this notion the next time he’s in your town to tear up a local street festival. It’s important to remember to be kind.

Norway's Mhost Likely continues its fantastic run of form with a new EP from feel-good Oslo artist Henrik Villard on its Mhost Like Green imprint. It features two sun-soaked, heart-melting house grooves and remixes from Fouk and Gordon Joe. Henrik Villard is a deep house phenomenon who has made a huge impact locally and is now turning heads around the world. In the studio he layers warm sounds, lo-fi samples and groovy bass with flowing melodies that swell the heart. He has done so on labels like Moskalus and Beatservice and recently remixed label co-owner Gordon Joe on Mhost Likely. His ability to blend classic deep house and golden-age house aesthetics is unrivaled as this distinctive new package shows.
Inspired by a mix of everything from ambient to electro and house, Gordon Joe only makes his debut on this label in February with his 'Luminous' single but follows it up with this standout Blue Forest Remix. It heads into downtempo territory with low-slung house rhythms paired with delicate bass patterns that make for a meditative groove.

Turbo Recordings is honoured to present the latest from label founder Tiga, another career pinnacle from the man many call Mr. Pinnacle. "It’s always special for me to put out a record on Turbo,” says Tiga. "As label owner, it was an easy yes. As a valued label artist, I was pleasantly surprised by my decision."

And we’re sure you’ll be delighted at having been left out of the process entirely, as the Montreal icon makes a return to his amazing roots on “Colours So Bright." Tiga produced the record with Quinn from Paranoid London, aka Johnny Aux, at the latter’s old-school subterranean London studio, mixing raw acid house and electro with a live, one-take vocal fuelled by a brief but torrid affair with Fair Lady Alcohol. “His studio is the only place I ever really drink. You probably think of me as as an ascetic Marc Aurelius type, but as it turns out, I’m not immune to the infectious grins of the sweet lager lads of Old London Town."

Turning off the humour-powered afterburners for a moment, the story behind the song’s creation is serious in nature. Tiga recorded “Colours So Bright" shortly after attending the funeral of his close friend, the legendary producer Philippe Zdar. “I felt enveloped by his spirit,” says Tiga. “The record’s artwork is a photo from Ibiza, where we loved to spend time together with our families every year. The song inspired by and dedicated to him."

Rounding out the release is a dub version for those understandably sickened by the sound of the human voice, as well as the operatic “October Trance Song,” which Tiga describes as “designed for exactly the kind hands-in-the-air moment at a party that doesn’t exist right now. It’s like a pair of high heels but I’m a farmer. Or a rough-and-tumble ranch hand, but still with high heels. But I know the day will come when I can cast off these overalls and make that moment a reality again. See you in 2029."

Catz 'n Dogz welcome old friend and kindred spirit Alvaro Cabana to the Pets family with this powerful quartet of electric bulldozers. Building on the momentum he's been enjoying on his own Rotten City label, here we find the Spanish DJ in overdrive with three originals and one version.

'Ritmo Espiral' starts and ends the piece. Slapping with electroid spikiness and a pushed groove that thumps like it's the mid 2000s all over again, there's a timelessness here to both the original and the dub mix that bubble over with dark funk and nod in all directions from Black Strobe to Tiefschwarz.

They're joined by two more big time bruisers: 'Los Muertos Misteriosos' continues the electro theme with waves and layers of textures crashing down over a relentless drum/sub swagger while 'Barrio Solar' revels and writhes in more of Alvaro's groovecraft. Tight guitars, shimming top notes and a breakdown that will send you into space. Strap in tight, we'll see you on the other side.

In addition to launching his own career, the label has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Core talent includes ZZT (Tiga's collaboration with Zombie Nation), Jori Hulkkonen, BETON, Clouds, Harvard Bass, Pilo, Shaded, Dimitri Veimar and a host of new young producers in genres ranging from pure techno, electro, and house to pop. The list of artists who have released music on the label is a veritable 'who's who' of top-level talent spanning a broad musical range, and this, along with a commitment to beautiful design, has earned the label respect in the industry and a cult following among fans. 

“We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
