Catz ‘n Dogz make a standout debut on Crosstown Rebels with two compelling new house tracks on ‘Can’t Stand’, complete with a remix from leftfield innovator Robag Wruhme.

A pairing whose renowned reputation has been built and shaped across an illustrious career, Polish duo Grzegorz Demiañczuk and Wojciech Tarañczuk, aka Catz’ n Dogz, have been serving up their own diverse and varied take on house for more than fifteen years. Founders of their own Pets Recordings imprint, in that time they have released on esteemed labels, from Diynamic to Defected, Glitterbox to Watergate and more, while playing at almost every major club and festival across the globe. Their fresh in-between sounds and knack for cooking up curious and impactful sounds have made them mainstays of the scene, and that run of stellar releases continues here with a debut appearance on Crosstown Rebels as they link with ZenSoFly for ‘Can’t Stand’ - with longstanding German favourite Robag Wruhme on remix duties.

Opener ‘Can’t Stand’ sees the pair reunite with vocalist ZenSoFly, a talent they’ve worked with on notable hits like ‘Wave.’ Her vocals bring soul and attitude over a tight, rubbery and sleazy house beat, underpinned with a heavy bassline - providing the sort of chunky cut to lock in a dancefloor and make it march in unison.
Robag Wruhme has been a Pampa label mainstay and famously curveball producer for many years with his scintillating blend of minimalism, melody and unusual sound sources. That is the case again with this remix, a dark workout that hurries along on snappy drums, detuned vocals and scuzzed up, droning synths to ensure maximum impact.

The EP is closed out with ‘Wake Up’, a widescreen and atmospheric cut packed with detail. The bassline is taught, freaky vocals echo within the mix, and synths spray about to dramatic effect, delivering another full flavour house cut with a dark soul and futuristic designs.

Brazil’s finest is back with a bang! “Drink In Paris” bears all the hallmarks of a Gui Boratto classic in the tradition of “Beautiful Life”, “Like You” or “No Turning Back”. Something’s different though… This time the vocals don’t come from Gui’s wife Luciana Villanova but from Amsterdam-based fashion designer extraordinaire LHANA MARLET. And there’s another sweet surprise: The pop-heavy original gets expertly carved into a moroderesque club banger by none other than Deep Dish legend DUBFIRE. Santé, les amis!

Meanwhile, B-side “Almost Everything” takes the vibe into Kölsch’s signature indescribable euphoric heights. So indescribable in fact that we had to ask BO, Turbo’s proprietary AI and Metadata Scraper, to analyze the track based on tempo, emotional valence, and “fun factor”. His conclusion: “Total banger.” Thanks, BO!

Reflecting on just what he’s achieved here with his Danish friend Kölsch, Tiga is characteristically thoughtful: “Would you rather have a gun in your hand, or a hand in your hand? Ellum Audio serves up a selection of dance floor weapons on a bumper new sampler handpicked by label head Maceo Plex. 

Italian Laherte trained at Studio 76 Music and has since built on that early promise with tunes on top labels. He opens up with 'My Mind', a driving techno cut with slapping hits and filtered alien sounds bringing the menace. Ellum Audio artist Waltervelt then keeps it dark and cosmic with the skewed synth energy and prickly beats of his eerie 'Back Room'.

Argentina's David Bau has made big moves in the underground with this potent take on techno. Here he offers up 'Deconstruct', a tense and turbulent stomper with flashy synth designs and intense, grinding bass. French mainstay Madben follows up his excellent recent album with 'The Drone Dance', another standout track with strobe-lit synth lasers firing over the face of an ice-cold rhythm. 

Part 2 opens with Ibiza-based producer and DJ John Monkman, the founder of Beesemyer Music and a familiar face on this label. He impresses again with 'Talking Heads', another sublime mix of futuristic synth designs carefully layered up over compelling, steel-edged drums. 8-Bit Culprit is the house and techno alter ego of Faraz Ehsan from India. His 'Refurbished Robots' is an electrifying peak time cut that takes you to the heart of a dance floor in outer space, with nebulous pads and squealing cosmic sounds all wrapping around the urgent grooves. 

Next up is the collaborative Headwaters duo from Turkey. They draw on their mix of electronic sounds and instrumental skills on 'Eternal Madness', a slick tech track that locks you into crisp loops then mesmerises with the glowing synth harmonies which shine brightly up top. Danish DJ and producer Christian Nielsen is back on the label to round out this collection with 'Liberate,' a dark dance floor punisher with neck-snapping snares and ghoulish voices over a slithering and hypotonic beat. This has already been receiving plays from Maceo Plex at the likes of Timewarp, Brunch Madrid and the Ushuaia opening and is set to be a summer highlight. 

This is another high-class voyage to the edges of the techno galaxy courtesy of Ellum.

Berlin’s first lady, Anja Schneider, remixes Marbs’ recent hit record, ‘Whitefence’ 

Everyone has their origin story, Anja’s begins with the legendary club, Tresor. After a magical first experience and an epiphany that Techno could be her life’s journey, Anja moved to Berlin and set out to make her dreams come true. Some 30 years later, she has achieved more than she could ever imagine. A DJ throughout the ‘90s, she opened her production portfolio in 2005 with a Sebo K collaboration on her new imprint, Mobilee, a label which would become seminal. After 12 years at the helm, she launched her new venture SoUs and continues to push a warm, richly musical, tech sound. 

For her remix, Anja strips the original back to basics and injects a a ton of funk. Opening with wonky fx and a tough kick, subtle disco bass and vocal ad libs keep it groovy, baby. Riding the automation, the bassline mutates and envigorates to the break where a moment of calm is broken by a dancefloor of happy clubbers dancing their troubles away. A classic sound from the queen of clubland!

Okay, you’re listening to the 23rd edition of Kompakt’s annual compilation series TOTAL… hold on… 23??? It’s impossible to look at this number without thinking of William S. Making her debut is the wonderful ARGIA with the somewhat misleading title ‘No Concept’ – the Madrid native indeed has a very precise plan. Also, our number one hit guarantor, JÜRGEN PAAPE, is represented here with his brand-new super hit ‘Alone In Italy’. His colleague MICHAEL MAYER is also in top disco spirits with ‘Talmi’. One of the secret weapons of the current season comes from STEPHAN BARNEM & FUTURISTANT. ‘Don’t Cry’ is a passionate New Wave belter for eternity. JÖRG BURGER proclaims a new, trippy genre: Cinematic Dance, before C.A.R. & PATRICE BÄUMEL slowly raise the energy level in the ‘Four Down’ Club Mix. JOHN TEJADA then cruises calmly at the desired cruising altitude while the cabin crew serves refreshments. ‘Duration’ by BARNT/MAYER pays tribute to an artist formerly known as Prince with grand rave romanticism, and about REX THE DOG’s summer smash hit ‘Change This Pain For Ecstasy’, there’s really nothing more to say. The Thuringian force of nature ROBAG WRUHME must not be missing here, of course. ‘Fire’ once again shows him in top form, with one of the dirtiest basslines in techno history. Joining us from London is HARDT ANTOINE, who spells u n d e r s t a t e m e n t with ‘All We See’. And finally, REINHARD VOIGT feat Eduard Weber bring it all together – live from the grand Comedy Barn of folk music. Cheers!

Madben's superb Troisième Sens album is remixed again, as new mixes from Josh Wink and AVNU join previous offerings from Alinka and Avision on this standout EP.

Kicking off this fantastic package is Ukraine-born but Berlin-based Alinka. She is now right at the cutting edge of the scene after big releases on the likes of Rekids and Live at Robert Johnson. She is a regular at iconic spots like Berghain/Panorama Bar, Circoloco and Smart Bar and flips 'Addicted' into a heavy house cut with thumping drums and lithe baselines. Acid sprays about over warmer synths to make for a real peak-time weapon. Next up is Josh Wink, a legendary electronic artist who heads up the Ovum label and has consistently crafted some of house and techno's biggest tracks. He flips '1AM At A Rave' into seven-plus minutes of scintillating electronic deepness with trippy leads and real synth intensity building to an explosive peak.

NYC DJ and producer Avision has released EPs such as ‘Innocence’ on this label while also getting support for his new school techno from Adam Beyer and Chris Liebing. His remix of 'Circuit Breaker' is a
chunky and textural affair with seriously weighty drums. Stark synths rise up through the mix next to bubbling acid to make for a heart-of-the-dance-floor classic. Scottish artist AVNU is another label regular
who dropped his ‘Tough To Love But Worth The Effort’ album here last year. He flips '1AM At A Rave' into a dark and atmospheric cut with flashes of strobe-lit synth and zippy leads that rip up the crunchy electro-tinged drums.

This is a vital package of varied reworks that bring plenty of new direction to the superb source material.

Turbo Recordings was founded by Tiga in Montreal back in 1998. In addition to launching his own career, the label has been integral in the success of acts like Chromeo, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont and most recently, ANNA & Charlotte de Witte. Core talent includes ZZT (Tiga's collaboration with Zombie Nation), Jori Hulkkonen, BETON, Clouds, Harvard Bass, Pilo, Shaded, Dimitri Veimar and a host of new young producers in genres ranging from pure techno, electro, and house to pop. The list of artists who have released music on the label is a veritable 'who's who' of top-level talent spanning a broad musical range, and this, along with a commitment to beautiful design, has earned the label respect in the industry and a cult following among fans. 

“We started out singing into plastic bags and shipping them to stores as quickly as possible. Later, we discovered that vinyl sounds way better when delivered by kayak. I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
