A journey into a mixture of sonic memories from Puglia, in the South East of Italy, through music by artists from the region and recordings that took place locally by musicians passing by. The show includes traditional music genres such as Pizzica, the forgotten story from the early nineties of its electronic counterpart Tecnopizzica, folk songs from cassette tapes sold at street stalls, and ballads sung in local dialects. All together with a multitude of other stuff spanning from an edit of 'Salento Love', a dubplate recorded by Busy Signal in 2013, to experimental Electronic music, Industrial Noise and Ambient releases from underground labels such as Canti Magnetici and the cutting-edge catalogue from the eighties of Minus Habens Records.

This episode explores the discography of the legendary Neapolitan saxman, songwriter and composer James Senese who founded the Italian cornerstone band Napoli Centrale, one of the most important ensembles in the panorama of Italian prog-rock and jazz music. Famous for singing primarily in Neapolitan and experimenting with influences going from prog-rock to funk, soul, jazz and Neapolitan music, James Senese played a decisive role in the rise of Napoli's music scene of the '70s and '80s. His working-class Neapolitan identity and the complex experience of being of black descent in postwar Italy have been recurrent themes in his music career. He grew up in one of the toughest outskirts of the city and is the son of Anna Senese, a Neapolitan woman, and James Smith, an African American soldier of the 92nd Infantry Division, redeployed in Naples for a few years following the Salerno landing in 1943.

The new chapter of Turbo Sud on @radioalhara is a sonic investigation of South Italy's extensive traditional music repertoires dedicated to the sea. Tune in for a one-hour dive into a mix of songs sung in local dialects exploring maritime culture, sailors, fishermen, water deities, seaside romance, and controversial storytellings about cigarette smugglers, alongside a selection of ambient, industrial noise and experimental Electronic music.

This show will include several archival recordings and revival reinterpretations of fisherman songs, including 'Aja Mola', a Sicilian chant used to be intoned by tuna fishermen on the island of Favignana, incorporating Arabic words with Sicilian to invoke Jesus with all his saints, asking for a fishing trip rich in abundance while also functioning as a litany for setting the pace of the movements required by the hard labour on the boat. 

Another highlight will be ballads dedicated to aquatic life, such as one dedicated to a fictional swordfish desperately trying to save his beloved after she gets caught by fishermen or a song about Cola Pesce, the myth of a merman whose legend has persisted in the literature of the peninsula since the 12th century.

Moreover, the mix will feature a diverse range of Neapolitan Music from Sceneggiata to Neomelodico. Think of beach towns and seaside locations through melodic love songs and stunning vocals recounting the life o fisherman, love tragedies, summer memories and the troubling life of a South Italian cigarette smuggler.

This fourth episode of Turbo Sud on @radioalhara is an hour of South Italian acoustic guitar songs by songwriters, sonaturi, cantastorie e cantori, such as the legendary Sicilian singer Rosa Balistreri, pop star Domenico Modugno, and a little-known Calabrian Arbëreshë music group called Moti I Parë. The show groups together a collection of both well-known and rare records mostly from the 60s and 70s with very different themes, such as love, the struggle of South Italian's working class and the hardship and nostalgia of emigrants.

Earlier this year, SSC Napoli had a triumphant victory in Serie A. After more than thirty years, a Southern Italian football team has finally clinched the Italian league, marking a historic achievement for the city and the rest of the country.

The show aims to gather Neapolitan rap and Neomelodico – two key players in a thriving and uprising local music scene. Both scenes, characterized by music sung in the Neapolitan language, are imposing themselves despite the misundersting and marginalisation fueled by Italian national media. Expect hits, lesser-known releases, low-quality unreleased recordings sourced from YouTube and Telegram, live acapella performances from Tik Tok and an array of edits and mashups. 

This music context is a complex geographical spectrum, reaching far beyond the borders of Naples itself, extending across Southern Italy, particularly in cities like Bari, Palermo, and Catania, where the historical popularity of Neapolitan music originates from the pre-unification era of Southern Italy. But also, in Rome, Northern Italy, and among South Italian communities abroad – in cities like Stuttgart and Mannheim in Germany - due to the extensive South Italian diaspora present in Northern Europe and America.

Neomelodico, a music genre born in Naples during the eighties, emerged from the remnants of classical Neapolitan Music and Sceneggiata Napoletana. It is renowned for being played at weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries within working-class South Italian families. While maintaining a strong connection with Neapolitan musical traditions, Neomelodico singers reinterpret these traditions by infusing elements of folk music, pop-rock, hip-hop, and reggaeton influences. These influences often resonate with music genres like Romanian Manele, as well as contemporary Balkan, Arab, and Turkish pop music. 

In recent years, the genre has experienced a meteoric rise on various streaming platforms, amassing millions of streams and gathering thousands to concerts. Despite all of this, only a very few singers have secured record deals with major labels over the past four decades.

The show delves into a peculiar niche of South Italian music repertoires exploring themes connected to the life of donkeys and horses. Expect old songs tipically recited by horse cart drivers in the streets of places such as Napoli, Palermo, and Salento, as well as a selection of other sort of songs entirely dedicated to the life of the two species.

The mix will explore the intricate relationship between man and these animals, the hardships of farmers life in post-war Italy and the love for these creatures, but also their dreadful exploitation that used to take place in mines and fields, or still happening in contemporary clandestine horse racing.

Turbo Sud is back on Radio Alhara after a four-month silence. The show paused due to the most recent and tragic exacerbations of the Palestinian genocide perpetrated by the zionist colonial entity and its occupation forces since longer than 76 years. Before giving any introduction to today's episode, it is vitally important to state that Turbo Sud will always stand unequivocally against zionism and always be in support of a free and decolonised Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.

This episode marks the first takeover on the Turbo Sud show, and OEOAS, the Electroacoustic Orchestra Sonic Arts Workshop from Naples, will be today's guest. The orchestra was born in the Department of Electronic Music at the Conservatory San Pietro a Majella in Napoli from an idea by musician, composer, and professor Elio Martusciello in 2014.

OEOAS is a horizontally organised orchestra, an open container focused on improvisation, sociality, and collaboration through the use of a sign language called "OEOAS protocol". Since its foundation, the project has included more than 550 musicians, including professionals, amateurs, and students, and various forms of collaborative work, such as one with the musicians of Alexandria and Cairo - the latter is featured on this broadcast.

The first recording in the show will be "Rosso" (2020), a 21-minute-long track released in the first and only publicly available OEOAS album. As a result of an intense recording process that lasted a week, a hundred musicians from all over Italy created this composition driven by the urgency of collective action as both a musical experience and a social act.

The second part of the show will be a 37-minute excerpt from an unreleased live improvisation held at the Goethe Institut of Cairo in 2023 as part of a 3-day workshop and concert titled Mortajal X OEOAS by OEOAS members and musicians from Cairo under the co-direction of Palestinian musician, educator, and researcher Huda Asfour and the Italian composer, improviser, researcher, and OEAOAS's member Valentina Ciniglio.

Inspired by Angela Davis's essay "Are Prisons Obsolete?", this mix explores a recurring and equally stigmatised and controversial theme in South Italy's music landscape: the prison system and the suffering of detention. Davis advocates for a society without prisons, challenging traditional notions of crime and punishment. Starting from those notions, this radio show aims to dive into South Italian music culture and its historical perspectives on imprisonment, navigating through its contradictions and complexities, intertwined with the dramatic and systemic social inequalities of this side of the country: extremely high unemployment rates, low wages, informal economy, undocumented work, and the oppressive shadows of organised crimes. 

The mix features Neapolitan music such as Sceneggiata and Neomelodico, folk revival alongside political songs, the OST of the underground cult movie "Mery Per Sempre", and now-forgotten ethnographic recordings of jail chants passed down orally in Sicily and Puglia. While these songs all confront the theme of detention, they are seldom juxtaposed, as they are by artists and informal performers coming from very diverse historical periods and social class backgrounds. The show aims to resonate with Davis's vision of a fairer future where equality, safety, justice, and well-being of all can and must be fostered also through the abolition of prisons.

This episode focuses on the discography of the Neapolitan rap duo Co'Sang, to celebrate their highly anticipated return with a new album titled Dinastia after a twelve-year hiatus. Formed by rappers Luchè and Ntò in 1995, Co'Sang played a pivotal role in the rise of Italian Hip Hop. Their signature style was defined by the use of the Neapolitan language and their raw portrayal of life in the city's marginalised neighbourhoods, in a period where Naples was hit by dramatic events like the waste management crisis and the infamous Scampia Feud—a bloody conflict between Camorra factions for control of the drug trade in the early 2000s.

Co'Sang's music seamlessly blended the gritty aesthetics of gangsta rap with deeply local stories, featuring a mix of old-school hip-hop beats and stark depictions of street life in Naples and Southern Italy. Their first two albums recounted stories of poverty, systemic neglect, Camorra violence, police brutality, and state oppression, offering a powerful voice to the struggles faced by those living on the city's fringes.

For this episode, Gianluca ripped tapes—most of which aren’t available online— and collected rarities from Bandcamp from local bands like Airfish, a collective founded in 1992 known for its taste for weirdness, deconstruction, and anarchy. The mix also features unreleased music from one of the band’s founders, Pietro Palazzo, who passed away in 2020 and is a key inspiration behind this episode. Other highlights include tracks from the trash metal band Nuclear Symphony, a traditional Sicilian jail folk song by Enzo Raoul, and an unexpected Neapolitan neomelodico song about emotional infidelity, set on the musical theme of Atlantis is Calling by Talking Heads, performed by Nino Fiorello.

A one-hour mix exploring emotional perspectives and artistic representations on tears and the act of crying through a selection of Southern Italian songs in regional dialects. These songs delve into themes of mourning, coping with pain, healing, performing collective rituals, and recounting real-life stories. The topics addressed include death, love, poverty, the violence of the mafia and landowners, nostalgia, separation, and emigration.

Turbo Sud / Radio Alhara ('Lacreme / Tears'), 13th January 2025

Turbo Sud is back with a special guest mix by @canti_magnetici, an underground record label based 'somewhere in South Italy', founded in 2015 by Gaspare Sammartano, Andrea Penso, and Donato Epiro. 

Canti Magnetici is a project that began a decade ago when all three founders lived in Puglia, in the South East of Italy. As Donato recounted to me, in those days, they used to meet at Andrea's trullo, (a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof) in Ostuni, to discuss music, shape the vision for the label, assemble tapes, and cook together.

Curated by Donato Epiro (@donatoepiro) and Gaspare Sammartano (@flashflood_g), now the sole founders continuing the project, the show will take you through the label's distinctive catalogue, which explores natural and cultural phenomena, states of being, and scientific ideas through unconventional sounds, words, and imagery. Expect a variety of ambient, industrial noise, tape music, spoken words, experimental Electronic music, or a field recording recorded in Aliano (Matera, Basilicata) and released as part of "Carnevale di Aliano (Uscita delle Maschere Cornute)" in 2021.

Donato Epiro is a biologist, composer and musician, working with a mixture of influences in which electronic scores made up of sounds from online archives, videos, tapes, samples, and acoustic, analogue and digital instrumentation are intertwined with ecological, anthropological and fantastic themes. 

Gaspare Sammartano is an underground musician and soundmaker. His solo work involves gathering and manipulating tapes and reflecting on the evolution of modern sampling techniques.

Camilla Salvatore's show “Bammenella”, inspired by the idea of ​​a radio drama, explores the relationship between Naples, herself, and some of her friends and collaborators. Blending dialogues, vernacular and pop Neapolitan music across various genres and eras, soundtracks from her films, dramaturgy and recordings collected between 2018 and 2025—including voice notes and lo-fi field recordings from her phone—the mix unfolds as an intricate collage of emotional states, contradictions, self-examinations on love and life, and oneiric, non-linear explorations of the city. 

The title of the mix, which literally means “little girl” in Neapolitan, is derived from the song So' Bammenella 'e copp' 'e Quartiere (1912) by author and playwright Raffaele Viviani. The show features several genres, including Canzone Napoletana, 70s and 80s Neapolitan disco, Neomelodico, ballads by singer-songwriters, tape and ambient music, and early 2000s Neapolitan rap. The mix also includes intimate audio contributions from Angela De Stefano, Ciro Riccio, Davide Luigi Di Lorenzo, Germana Frattini, and Vanessa Esposito, listed in alphabetical order.

Camilla Salvatore, born in Pompeii, Naples, Italy, is a filmmaker whose work intricately weaves personal narratives with broader social themes. Raised in the Vesuvian area, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Painting and Visual Arts at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan before completing a Master’s in Artists’ Film and Moving Image at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2020. 

She recently released her latest film, Il Capitone (2024). Set in Napoli, Il Capitone offers a glimpse into the daily life of Vanessa, portraying the struggle to claim her place in the world. Vanessa’s coming-of-age story runs through mundane and dreamlike states, sensual dances and songs of salvation. Il Capitone touches the depths of her existence—as well as that of her mother Lina and her lifelong friend Ciro— celebrating their quest for redemption through self-expression and performing arts.

A new guest mix by Donato Epiro and Gaspare Sammartano, who run @canti_magnetici, the South Italian label already featured in the February episode. This special broadcast has been programmed in response to Holy Week, as it includes traditional funeral music from the Holy Week processions in Taranto.

In 2022, on Holy Friday, Canti Magnetici released a tape entitled Musica Lacrimosa, not credited to any artist. Behind this title, which references the text of the Stabat Mater, lies a collection of funeral marches from the tradition of their hometown, Taranto, performed by band ensembles during the processions (Misteri) commemorating the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

At the time, the label offered no information about the music on the tape, limiting itself to a mention of Taranto, a photograph of the city’s port after the bombing on the night between 11 and 12 November 1940, and the recording date, 1974. It was their clear intention that the work not be perceived as an archival or documentary project. Instead, they hoped listeners would focus solely on the profound drama of the compositions and performances, somehow sounding equally remote and existential due to the nature of the procession marches and the now-deteriorated medium: an amatorial tape of field recordings, whose author remains unknown.

Today, they are presenting the work in an expanded version (which includes 45 minutes of tape recordings and a newly composed 15-minute piece) to share the sadness and sense of inadequacy that, as musicians and curators of an independent record label, they deeply feel in these historical times. Donato and Gaspare hope to create an occasion for reflection: How should art respond to the despair of the present? Especially as we live in a society increasingly accustomed to ever-growing self-referential, individualistic, hedonistic, promotional, and empty-hearted ways of life.

Listening to the decayed remnants of these old funerary compositions becomes for them a way to ponder on who we are as humans and where we continue to go wrong.

A special show curated by Sonia Garcia (@acideyes), dedicated to Lou X: a figure as enigmatic as he is pivotal in the history of Italian rap.

The mix includes tracks and interview excerpts, created from material Sonia gathered over eleven years ago, when she wrote an article about him for Vice Italia in 2014. The title, Gerico è lontana ma a ogni passo la incontro (“Jericho is far, yet I reach it with every step”), takes inspiration from a quote by Lou X in the track La Raja. The artist is known for having repeatedly expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause and anti-colonial resistance movements.

Sonia Garcia (@acideyes) is a dj and journalist of Quechua descent, born in Italy and based in Milan. She is the founder of SAYRI (@s4yri), an artistic platform and event format run together with Amazon and Crltxxx, celebrating the practices of artists from Abya Yala and its diaspora, with a focus on dissident identities. Her research, both in writing and music, explores notions of belonging, temporality and territorial memory.

Turbo Sud / Radio Alhara ('Pe Chi Sta Lontano / To Those Far Away'), 11th August 2025

Vashish Soobah (1994) is a visual artist, filmmaker and documentary filmmaker born in Sicily to Mauritian parents who grew up in Brianza. He graduated in Media Design and Multimedia Arts at Naba in 2018 and later earned a master’s degree in Moving Image & Artist’s Film at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2019.

In the construction of his works, he always starts from his condition of in-between, being in the middle between two cultures, the Italian and the Mauritian. His practice focuses on the concept of memory and migration, the meaning of home and identity, spirituality and issues related to the Mauritian diaspora through biographical and personal narratives. Another fundamental element that he revisits in his practice is reworking the images and videos from the family archive.

Nou pe al feter dan Catania, 1997 (Let’s go party in Catania) is a sound piece where Vashish explores conversations around belonging, diaspora and memory, through the unfolding of memories and archival recordings in connection to Sicily, where he was born and lived until the age of seven, before relocating North to Lombardy with his parents. Reflecting upon Stuart Hall’s condition of living between two islands, Vashish’s show interwines sonic memories of his nuclear and extended family within the larger context of the Mauritian diaspora and all the related movements, which he describes, quoting Édouard Glissant, as the movements of a jellyfish. 

A central idea of this show was to go through the audio recordings from VHS tapes taken at parties that his family would set up in their house in Catania. At the same time, the show includes conversations with his cousin, his brother and his mum and dad. As Vashish recalled to me, his birthdays would become a pretext for his family to create a dancefloor in the living room of their apartment. 

The VHS tapes reveal an apparent sonic map, which embodies what he believes to be the life between islands. For instance, the overlap of this condition takes life in the sequence of recordings of “happy birthday” songs blended with Mauritian Sega, 1990s Western pop, Liscio folk music and Indian melodies, all while cheerings and voices in languages such as Creole and Italian take place in the background.

The broadcast features unpublished recordings, unreleased and DIY sonic improvisations and excerpts from Vashish's artwork ‘Perle Sparse’, an installation, presented in 2023 at Santarcangelo Festival and in 2025 at Triennale Milano.
