Tired

La mort, ça m'enchante...

Another dark ballad type of thing, working on a title suggested some time ago by the great @opus-quatre. I tried to go for something massive, with an unusually dense arrangement, but I'm not sure the result reaches geological proportions... and the guitar solo leaves a bit to be desired. On the positive side, though, it was much fun to play on the bass :-)

Groundswell

I was 12 years old when the video game Deus Ex Machina was published. I must have played it maybe a couple years later, but still as an impressionable young man :-)

It was weird and awesome, a video game that came with a "real" music soundtrack on the same audio cassette. Incredibly fascinating to me, I remember it as a mystic experience.

This is my cover of "I Am Machine", first song from the game soundtrack, written by Mel Croucher, with the original (and amazing) vocals by Donna Bailey.

I hope my version does justice to the magic that this masterpiece of computing and entertainment history represents.

An amazing little piece of software, called Spleeter, was used to extract the vocals. The rest (beat, synths, and vocoder) was all done in Caustic. Plus a healthy dose of Korg iWaveStation for those extra-cheesy '90s sounds.

I Am Machine (Deus Ex Machina - Mel Croucher cover)

Being October, I'm incredibly late for this July collaboration prompt by @user295849933, but the melody of this piece has captured me. It's so haunting and beautiful, in fact, that I did... nothing, musically speaking.

Well, except the short intro, but that's minimal.

Initially I wanted to play the bass over it, but then I got the idea of turning it into voice. So I converted the piano piece to MIDI using an online tool, which did a half-decent job. I then loaded the MIDI part in Synthesizer V Studio (a kick-ass vocal synth by Dreamtonics), cleaned it up to be strictly monophonic, made subtle changes, added a bit of drama, and let the synthetic voice of Eleanor Forte sing it.

Then I added the same MIDI in Ardour, this time keeping all the polyphonic conversion artefacts, and had it played by Boing2 (an even more kick-ass bowed string virtual instrument by Xoxos).

The piano part is the original playing by Douglas. All I did was layering them together.

The result, in my opinion, is deliciously surreal. It has a nice pathos to it, and it's hilarious in some passages. All in all, I find it extremely pleasant :-)

My entry for the Disquiet Junto Project 0463: Making the Gradient.

The Assignment: Make a piece of music inspired by the concept of a gradient.

I let myself be inspired by the sounds of the Prophet VS, a 1986 vector synthesis instrument, with their smooth transitioning waveforms.

Of course, I didn't actually use that, but the Arturia iProphet iPad emulation, which meanwhile is almost as vintage as the real thing.
