Freestyle and Wax records honcho Juan Nunez has been holding it down for over 20+years playing amazing dance music and repping the west side properly. Juan established Wax records, a vital store and component of the LA music scene for years, and put out some very serious edits on his freestyle label (under the moniker J.E.N.), as well as releasing work by The Drunk and The Idjut Boys. A tremendous fluid DJ Juan's sets often seem effortlessly constructed and encompass a broad range of sounds. We are thrilled to have this OG join the podcast series. Humberto Matias (Social Disco Club) has been one of the major producers of Nu-disco sounds in the past 5-6 years, His track "The Way you Move" was a huge critical success, and showcased many of the trademarks of his production style: (smooth but funky, with a great bass line and tremendous swing) It was a track that could always be counted on to impact the dance floor and create an instant vibe. Humberto has put out records on Bear Funk, Mindless Boogie, Is it Balearic, and his own Hands of Time label. Corona Queens born, but with a long formative stretch growing up in Nebraska, and from Jamaican roots, (Derrick Harriott is an uncle), Brooklyn's Duane Harriott is as unique and specific as that trajectory indicates. One of our longtime NY peeps, Duane has always taken his own path and carved out a meaningful sensibility away from the various trends that come and go. (bearded hipster take note!) One of the founding residents of NYC's famed APT, Duane has played at pretty much every significant NY spot high and low for the past 15 years. Look for Duane's edit and remix work on the Stilov4music, Lumberjacks in Hell, and Intimate Friends labels amongst others.(Released under the monikers Devin Dare w/ Sean Marquand Bim Marx w/ Jorge West, Desiree West, & 2BAN) Also check out his weekly radio show on WFMU every Wednesday from 12-3pm, it is also archived. One of the leading producers and remixers in contemporary dance music, Cambridge raised Ray Mang, (Raj Gupta) hardly needs an intro. Under the name Ray Mang, (also under Laj, Sir Raymond Mang, Block 16, & Motif) he has written and recorded tracks with people like Jon Lucien, Bim Sherman, Jhelisa, Kier Kerby, Robert Owens and Mozez. He has also remixed tracks for disco heroes like Roxy Music, Banda Black Rio, Terry Callier, Freddie Mercury, Beck, Shirley Bassey, Bryan Ferry and Grace Jones amongst others. You can find his remixes and original material on labels like Bearfunk, DFA, Eskimo, Under the Shade, Noid, and his own Mangled label. Raj is a busy man with tons of stuff coming out, so we are very happy he made time for this great set.
