"Valley High" from the Luxury Liners debut They're Flowers.  

After releasing Freeclouds in 2011 under his own name, Carter Tanton toured the US with The War on Drugs and then joined Lower Dens. While on tour with Lower Dens, Carter had plenty of time to experiment with new ways of crafting songs using samples and other electronics.  The resulting album, They're Flowers, is his first release under the Luxury Liners moniker. 

Tanton explains, "This record had me stepping away from the guitar and focusing more on my interests in electronic music production. Still, most of the songs were written on a nylon string guitar. I actually thought the record was going to come out like Nick Drake judging from the original arrangements, but being on tour so much with Lower Dens, I had to bend them to fit the laptop."

The opening track, "Caribbean Sunset," loosely based on a John Cale track, uses Cale's lyrics but alters the melodic structures dramatically. The song, while originally recorded with the intention of becoming the first of a full album of John Cale covers, is the only one, as Tanton was drawn to crafting his own summery blend of electronic pop as well as recognizing other musicians who have influenced him. "Memphis Alex," written soon after Alex Chilton's death, loosely details a road trip - a car accident with a Mac truck in a snowstorm, ending up in Memphis and meeting Jody Stephens at the legendary Ardent Studios.

An album replete with lyrics lifted from mascara ads and characters from what could have been the jam band third installment of The Decline of Western Civilization, They're Flowers retains a clear, twinkling, pop-laced sunny sound as it explores drum programming and sampling via the laptop, Tanton's primary instrument while on tour. Luxury Liners is a clear departure from previous projects, one that reflects growth, ambition and ultimately, what gets created on the road.

Projecting enough weight to satisfy fans of his techier work, singles such as &#8216;411&#8217; and &#8216;Y Not&#8217; have also brought Ramon support from the true house heads.006 sees the Belgian team up with Russian producer, Tripmastaz, on two new and essential house jams. With a history of releases stretching back to the early 2000&#8217;s, it was Tripmastaz&#8217; work with DJ Sneak&#8217;s Magnetic Recordings in 2010 that really shot him into the limelight. Championed by the &#8216;original house gangster&#8217;, he has since gone on to launch Plant 74, his own label, and release music with Cecille, Be As One and Realtone.Title track &#8216;Jack&#8217; matches warm basement beats with an oldskool vocal sample declaring the death of Jack. Do not fear, this &#8216;Jack&#8217; is very much alive and well and groovin&#8217; with a healthy dose of retro-feeling. A decade since his first productions as part of Pendle Coven, Miles Whittaker delivers his debut album proper for Modern Love. The intervening time has seen him forge a formidable reputation alongside Sean Canty as Demdike Stare, and with Andy Stott as Millie & Andrea, beside his operations in the hardware field as Suum Cuique, solo excursions as MLZ and shadowy involvement in the HATE project - all the while building upon his in-demand skills as a DJ of twenty odd years experience, accumulating and absorbing far flung knowledge of hardcore UK jungle, Chicago house, Motor City Soul, the obscure UK techno of labels like Radioactive Lamb and Irdial, Italian concrète, Synthwave and contemporary noise. Which brings us to 'Faint Hearted', the Burnley-bred, Berlin-based maestro's debut solo opus; eight entirely analogue constructions riding the wave from wormhole hardcore clatter ('Lebensform') to body-compressing subbass undulations ('Irreligious'), trekking through frayed techno minimalism ('Status Narcissism') to mind-drift ambient ('Sense Data') and what sounds like a Demdike Stare track constructed on a worksite ('Rejoice'). But if you ask us, the best bits occur right at the end, with the ominous bass, funereal strings and obliterated noise of 'Archaic Thought Pattern 1' or the field recording clangour of 'Queuing', and certainly the majestically gratifying yet subtly dystopian 9 minute closer 'Loran Dreams'. As an individual sonic statement, it's an evocative exposition of Miles’ love of electronic music in all its shapes, harnessing his fidgety production style into one expansive, restless set of tracks.
