It really brings me back to the days of 'The Shadow' , I'd listen to it with my Grandfather.

In late 1972, Vincent Price sat down with Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran for WTIC's The Golden Age of Radio (full interview here - https://www.goldenage-wtic.org/gaor-32.html). 

During the course of their conversation, Price spoke about being accepted by the regular radio character actors even though he came to radio from Broadway.

One summer day in 1948, Willam S. Paley received a proposal from Lew Wasserman and Taft Shreiber—President and VP of The Music Corporation of America. They asked if CBS would be interested in buying The Amos N’ Andy Show, then airing on NBC.

At the time, U.S. Citizens were taxed 77% of all income over $70,000. However, if the duo behind Amos N’ Andy, Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden incorporated and sold their show to the network, they would be taxed under capital gains laws at 25%.

NBC wouldn’t allow the deal. But William Paley jumped at the chance. Amos n’ Andy moved over on October 10th. Shortly after, Lew Wasserman phoned again. He asked if CBS would be interested in purchasing The Jack Benny Program.

Benny organized his activities into a corporation. Paley and Wasserman negotiated an agreement for CBS to buy it for $2.26 Million.

NBC sent president Niles Trammel to California with orders to keep Benny at NBC. When William Paley heard that Trammel was on his way to California, he called Benny directly to arrange an in-person meeting. Benny invited him to Los Angeles.

Paley and CBS counsel Ralph Colin set up shop at the Beverly Hills Hotel. RCA head David Sarnoff was there as well, to help ensure Niles Trammel would secure the deal. 

NBC responded with a major counteroffer. Lew Wasserman intervened. CBS matched the counteroffer, and an impressed Jack Benny signed it. Sponsor American Tobacco was uneasy. Paley convinced them to back the move by offering compensation for every rating point Benny’s show lost. 

As all of this was happening, The Jack Benny Program broadcast live on the evening of Sunday, October 31st, 1948.

In June of 1983, Jack Carney broadcast a two-part audio documentary on the life and career of Jack Benny featuring interviews and recollections with the cast, and audio from the show. During the first part of the documentary the late Jack Benny, in an interview recorded years before, spoke of the importance of organic character and joke development on the Jack Benny Program.

After the November 20th, 1947 episode of Suspense, Roma Wines wrapped up its sponsorship of the series. For the next five weeks CBS broadcast Suspense on Friday evenings. Beginning on January 3rd, 1948 the program changed directions.

William Spier’s last date with the production was January 24th, with the episode “Eve,” starring June Havoc. They were married the next day.

When the couple finished honeymooning, Spier looked for his next project. He found it on the American Broadcasting Company.

On Friday, April 11th, 1947, CBS debuted a new situation comedy called My Friend Irma.

Marie Wilson starred as Irma Peterson, a kind-hearted, simple-minded, buxom blonde stenographer, while a tremendously versatile actress—Cathy Lewis—portrayed her completely opposite roommate Jane Stacy.

The show was created by Cy Howard during the time after World War II when head of CBS William Paley was championing new, experimental programming. Howard cast Cathy Lewis after hearing her read, and Marie Wilson after seeing her in Ken Murray’s Blackouts.

Gloria Gordon played Mrs. O’Reilly. Hans Conried was Professor Kropotkin. John Brown played Irma’s boyfriend Al, and Alan Reed played Mr. Clyde, Irma’s boss.

By the time this episode, “Irma and Jane Visit Coney Island” aired on Monday, June 7th, 1948 at 8:30PM, My Friend Irma was being sponsored by the Lever Brothers. That season, Irma was the 2nd highest rated show on Monday evenings behind The Lux Radio Theater.
